The first time I heard this song was at the 9/11 Memorial Concert held a couple of months after the 9/11 attack. The piano player for Five For Fighting is also the singer in this song. He was playing this song on piano only to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

I appreciate your down to earth style. It feels like we're sitting at the kitchen table together and discussing music.

Five For Fighting is an ice hockey reference, it's a 5 minute penalty for fighting. I've heard ice hockey is gaining popularity in India, particularly in northern India.

A great song about Superman's existential crisis, to find what is really inside him besides the show on the outside. A song for all people who want to look inside for more.

This song came out years after Me, Myself, and Irene. It has nothing to do with that movie nor was it in it. It belongs to the Superman TV Show, Smallville. Why do none of the views correctly discuss this song? It is actually only about Superman. Somethings aren't open to interpretation the way people want to believe but somethings are literally artistically created with a message and this song was made for the Smallville Soundtrack to the first season in order to humanize the trials someone like Superman must endure being expected to be perfect but all to human emotionally. Look. Original Superman TV show, "It's a Bird, It's plane, No! Look up in the Sky! It's SUPERMAN! Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive..." More than just a pretty face beside a train. It means that Clark, in his teenage years, knows that deep down he is more than his destiny, more than just a god, he is a vulnerable person who cares about his humanity and relating to others as much as focusing on being able to fly so he wants everyone to know, he isn't just a weirdo in a red cape, he is your friend and you can believe in him that he will be there to keep you safe, not destroy you in a nuclear holocaust of heatvision. This song was only meant to humanize a character that is inhuman for a TV show that was trying to show what Pre-Superman in his youth would have tackled just like the rest of us and maybe it is cultural, maybe you don't understand how important Superman is to America and you might actually be missing the point because you didn't grow up with him like American's do. He is part of our zeitgeist, he is part of our subconscious, and it is okay to do research. No metaphors for Superman. It is about young Clark Kent and nothing else. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_(It%27s_Not_Easy)

You accurately depicted the meaning of the song when it was written--it was an allegory for Clark Kent--but you lost the plot. As soon as you said "some things aren't open to interpretation" you lost me. This song took on an entirely different meaning once it was released, and beyond that, art IS open to interpretation. It was written as a Superman metaphor, but the lyrics and story resonate with many people as many different things. It can be both at once.
