They come with runflat tyres on because there is no spare wheel. You may find that although its not law to have one or runflats on in the UK, it may be the case elsewhere. For me the runflats are a pain in the arse saver. If you get a puncture you can just truck on to somewhere convenient to get it changed. No phaff at the side of the road even to change a wheel.

Glad I stumbled across this, I’m looking to replace the run flats on my ‘16 JCW. It’s between these (or the PS5) and Goodyear eagle F1’s.

Yeah PS5s are also meant to be good but not tried those yet myself. The PS4s were great for me though!

I toured the U.K. on my JCW, so loud on P7 run-flats. Glad I had them when in the middle of nowhere but far too noisy. Worn my shoulders too. Scary at speed in the rain. My friend has Bridgestone run-flats without a problem.

Yep that was a major annoyance with them for me. After switching the difference in noise levels is quite incredible, so much quieter on the PS4's. And yeah not sure whether it's down to the composition of the side walls or what but the shoulder lasted no time at all compared to the rest of the tyre - totally agree though, severe and sudden understeer in the wet! Interesting the Bridgestone ones are better...

Recently fitted PS4s to my R53, superb tyre. Now I've just gone and bought a used F56 JCW I'll be swapping the PS4s onto the new car. As for runflats, I switched over to normal tyres 11 years ago and it's just the best upgrade anyone can do.

@@flight.5133 I just got mine from a local tyre shop, but I remember BlackCircles had them too. This was quite a few years ago now though and the PS5 has since been released, I don't think that is available in an 18" size yet but I'm sure it will be soon

Thanks so much for this. Made the change to PS4s last week and the difference is night and day. Transformed the car. Out of interest what tyre pressures do you go for? Do you go for the recommended levels or slightly below given they’re not RFs?

That's awesome, glad you thought it was worthwhile! Likewise for me I would say the difference was night and day. The front end has an immense level of grip now. I go for slightly below yeah, tend to go for about 35psi which has always worked well for me!

Would love to know the thought process of the mini engineer’s. So should we fit industry standard 225/40/18 @ £100 each or bespoke 205/40/18 @ £150 each with half the polished rim sitting outside of the tread footprint……. Made the jump to PS4 tyres today, agree with all your observations 👍

Yeah I have no idea either! It really doesn't make much sense, aside from maybe the people in charge of that decision not being fully informed? Either that or a deal with Pirelli to fit all Mini's of a certain production run with their tyres - who knows! Glad you agree, seems to be the best thing you can do to these cars, makes a huge difference 👍

225/40R18 does this size fit well?

I have a mini r58, need 2 front tyres , was looking at mp 4, not sure if I should change all 4 for non run flats....like them tyres as have Tim orotection

My recommendation would always be to run the same tyres on all 4 corners but it depends how you want the car to drive. The PS4s have decent rim protection too which is handy 👍

@@FootToPedal I have herd your tyres are more track orintated ,do u take your car on track? Do u regret changing to non runflts? You didn’t need to change suspension or anything else. Did you get a lot of punctures with the run flats? I have just bought the car so I am new to all this

@@justindabreu976 The PS4 is more of a fast road tyre than a track tyre if I'm honest. It probably wouldn't hold up hugely well after a few hard laps on track but its great on the road. I haven't tracked my car at this stage but it definitely would perform quite well (handling wise) with these tyres. No regrets from switching to non-runflats and no changes to the suspension required as the tyre is exactly the same size, just a different design to a runflat tyre. Thankfully I haven't had a puncture to date so no issues there either. Hope that helps!

Would you consider going thicker just wondering what you’re thoughts are on putting 235/40/18 on my f56

I don't think you'd be able to go that wide on the standard alloys as my understanding was 215 was the maximum width. However if you're running aftermarket wheels then I would say go for it, I'm sure that would give a tremendous level of grip on the front end but is also not wide enough for the car to tramline all over when on a cambered road.

Practise tyre rotation - front to back after 4k miles or so should even out the wear a little.

How does the tyre pressure monitoring cope with tyre rotation?

Yes totally stock! Mine is pre-OPF though so it is definitely louder than anything after 2019 or so. It also got louder as the exhaust went through more heat cycles. Thanks for watching!

I think it depends what you want from the car as I know they are very loud when you do the resonator delete, not a bad sound though! But yeah if you want more sound, is probably the best way to go. No problem, plenty more on the way 👍

Hi, good video, question; how much pressure would be correct to put on these non runflat tyres, my door sticker says on p7 runflats 45psi, would it be the same in non runflats?

Thanks! I personally would put a bit less in non run flats due to the softer sidewall of the tyre. 35 to 40 PSI should be sufficient I think

Looking to purchase a full set of the PS4 - 205/45/17s. But have 2 speed rating options, 'W' which would match the manufacturers recommendation, or 'Y' . Other than speed capability, do you think the Y/higher speed rating would offer any other advantages? Sidewall stiffness or how responsive they are ??

Yeah I went for the W's on mine - Obviously there is going to be some extra strengthening with the Y speed ratings just so they can take the extra strain of high speed. I would imagine there would be some minute changes to how they feel on the road as the sidewall and contact patch of the tyre will be reinforced. However I would honestly be surprised if you could feel the difference! If you plan on doing higher speeds, I would say you'd be fine to go with the Y speed ratings 👍

I've just been advised by Michelin that the only difference in their database is the Y rated tyre being lighter by 0.1kg (maybe allowing heat to dissipate quicker, resulting in the higher speed capabilities, thats my guess though) Otherwise there should be minimal difference, if any, regarding performance and feedback. But yeah I completely agree, & something I'm unlikely to notice. Liked and subscribed 👍

@@nickblayney774 PS 4S is the high performance version of the PS4. The PS4S is not as grippy in cold weather and is more heat resistant than a PS4 so better on track but also needs more heat to activate the grip. Mk8 Fiesta ST was fitted with PS4S and is the same tyre size as the JCW - 205/40/18 but Michelin have discontinued the PS4S in that size

Do you feel that the PS4 has mediocre feedback? It doesn't signal very well when they are about to lose grip.

I find in mine it's fairly clear when they're about to lose grip. Suppose its possible any vagueness you feel could potentially be down to suspension setup and the steering. The slightly softer sidewall will definitely mean they're not as clear cut as some tyres though

Yeah that's interesting actually, unfortunately BMW's electric racks are pretty vague these days. It was the same in my JCW but with the PS4's on there it's certainly sharpened it up and it gives me a lot more feedback now

@@FootToPedal I have another question...do you know how to properly open the cover that houses the brake fluid reservoir? There are few spots which can be opened with a coin or a flat head screw driver, but after that the cover still doesn't open.

Sorry wouldn't be too sure on that myself - is it possible that the cover is just stuck due to a small amount of pressure in the air gap between the top of the the fluid and bottom of the cap?

@@FootToPedal Oh, no. The issue was not the cap or the fluid itself. I couldn't open the big plastic cover that brake fluid reservoir was under. I found out that there are few different screws and I saw some of them, but not all :)

I suppose that RFs are tighter on the sidewall than non RF. If that is true, it is more likely to hit the rim with a kind of hole on the road. Isn’t it? Second, if the same model / size of tire, one RF and non RF cost the same, do you pick the non RF anyway?

I guess in theory yes, but if you're hitting a hole in the road with enough force to fully compress the sidewall and subsequently impact the rim, I think you've got a decent chance of doing damage whether it's RF or not, that'd be my take anyway. And personally I'd always pick a non RF tyre myself, but it's very much personal preference. They always seem to ride better to me

I would like to see the behavior of both models of the same brand. When changing tires, it is likely to have a better performance in the new ones than in the used ones. Regards

@@FootToPedal my car has Primacy 3 RF with half life (I bought it as it was). The other day I was on the track and the grip was amazing. I cannot imagine the behavior of new ones. Anyway, today I bought the 4 tires at a very good price at Costco. The combined savings in coupons and monthly payments with no interests is close to 30% off. Not bad 😎

This was an LCI 1 car, rather than LCI 2 which happened in 2021. Mine was a 2017 model, hope that helps!

@@FootToPedal You're right, 2 LCIs. Although 2018 could be either pre-LCI or LCI 1. Yours was a pre-LCI, which of course looks better than the LCI 2 :)

All depends what you want to use them for! If you want high performance then go PS4s, if you want all year round usability then probably go for the Climate Crosses. However I use my PS4s all year round and have no issues, great in the dry, wet and not bad in the snow/ice either

There's a lot of debate around this topic actually. Some people argue that if you retain the same tyre size it can never be classed as a mod, whereas some people report that their insurer classes any deviation from factory spec a mod, even when it comes to runflat tyres. Tbh it's ridiculous to me that something like that would ever be a mod, purely a money making scheme and get out clause. However probably best to check with your insurer as everyone's terms and conditions differ 👍

It really depends on the application as it can vary massively, I believe when I fitted these I got 205/40/18 but they can come in all kinds of sizes

Well that is obviously a downside - I personally have a temporary puncture repair kit to get it to a garage (as long as it's not catastrophic tyre damage). The benefits of non run flat tyres hugely outweigh the downside of no spare however

I wanted to change them from early on since they weren't very good, therefore didn't bother rotating them? Does that satisfy your requirements?
