DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RUN FLAT TIRES AND NOT RUN FLAT TIRES
In this video we will explain the difference between run flat tire and not run flat tire. We have 2 exact same model tires, however, one tire is run flat and the other tire is not run flat. We will explain how you get thicker side wall with run flat tire compared to non run flat tire and how actually a run flat tire is way heavier that non run flat tire. In my opinion the run flat tire weighs significantly more compared to non run flat tire. Run flat tire however it has its own advantages. This is just short informative video that will show you the difference between run flat tire and non run flat tire.

    Ran over some road debris (maybe a car part) last night on the highway. Punctured my sidewall. Had to put on the spare tire while other cars were zooming by me at 60 mph. Having a run flat tire would have allowed me to drive up to a parking lot away from traffic. A standard tire will give you less than 30 seconds till your rim starts contacting the road. In Texas, some exits are 5 minutes ahead of you. Good luck

    In this comparison, no. It's still a 225mm width, the exact same as it's non-run flat counterpart. It's just a heavier tire (which is a bad thing in everyway) but has the saving grace of still being usable enough to get you to a shop in the event of a flat (still isn't really worth it in my opinion.)

    If you've got a 'normal' car for commuting etc then run flats are probably the best choice as it means you can still drive the car if you get a puncture. If you've got a more sporty car that you enjoy driving at the weekends then non-run flats are the way to go - much more tyre feedback and a better ride, you're just fucked if you get a puncture.

    Run-flats are the way to go. A couple of times I got punctures. Was not a problem at all. Just continued driving to the point of destination. Got it fixed (plugged) next day. You can drive for up to 100 miles or kilometers with a puncture! The only thing is you should drive slowly like 60-70 km/h and get the tire fixed as soon as possible. I would even choose a car make based on it. BMWs and Cadillacs have run-flats. Something like the Cadillac ATS or BMW M440i are ideal daily cars in my opinion (fast, nimble around corners and have some luxury). However, there's no accounting for taste, and some people prefer large cars or SUVs. I prefer fast, nimble cars even for daily use. By the way some sports cars also have run-flats: Corvettes, Camaros, BMW M2. Just an opinion. Personally, I never had any problems with run-flats, and I don't understand people who hate them. Okay, they cost, like, 30% more and so what? No big deal for me. They also give a tad harsher ride but that's more than fine with me. My point is if you have a puncture, you may (1) damage the wheel, (2) spend a lot of time replacing and repairing it in the middle of the traffic (imagine if it is raining or if it is dirty!). Okay, there's no problem to do the repairs or replace it with a spare. I don't really mind getting it done. It's just why? I mean the technology is there. So why the heck should I do such things, like, I'm in some 1980s or 1970s??? One serious disadvantage is driving on summer run-flats on snow. My BMW had very little grip, and I was skidding a lot - like all the time non-stop. It's a bit crazy. It also means that you cannot get out of spin fast, even if you car has a lot of horsepower. On the positive side: Just put on winter tires (or all season tires) and enjoy driving on snow. Now how can you damage a wheel? Suppose you are driving, like, 100mph or 160km/h and your tire bursts, you will definitely damage the wheel. Not a likely scenario but an acquaintance of mine once had a case of a flat tire and the car went, like, 20 meters on the wheel damaging the latter. *But do not use run-flats on cars that don't have run-flat systems! However, you can use standard tires on cars that originally came with run-flats - just don't forget a repair kit or a spare tire with a jack.*

    @billmorrigan386

    @@cifey Why putting low profile rims in the first place? I know it's good for looks and esthetics but bad for driving and for the wheels. Run-flats may mitigate the stress on large rims to some extent, I guess. I think large rims give a false sense or making the car handle better (wanna-be race-car-like) but the effect should be negligible and infinitesimal--just like rear spoilers on civil cars (another decorative fixture). Race cars don't have very large rims. Nor do they use rear wings for looks. They have very large wings and weigh very little, like, 1200 kg and less. A typical street Ferrari or Porsche would weigh 1600 kg or more! And they would have tiny rear spoilers which are duds since rear wings are only used for fast cornering (like cornering at 80 mph or faster) and they actually decrease speed on a straight line. In order for that to take effect, the car must be as light as a feather and the rear spoiler must be as huge as that on a race car. The same kinda thing applies to large rims: they are mostly decorative things but they are not good for the longevity of the wheels and the whole suspension system. They produce a harsher ride but hardly improve the handling. Manufacturers just follow what is appealing to folks and what brings more dough. They even modify and increase exhaust sounds artificially🙂

    @@billmorrigan386 Larger wheels for bigger brakes and rotors. I was messing on one of my A4s and S4s and A8. They are all B5s and then the A8 is a D3, but the one A4 I have had the factory 15in wheels with the stock calipers right up to the caliper on the inside diameter. They use 288mm front brake rotors. When I upgraded the knuckle/upright to the one off an A8 D2, They are made of aluminum, so I saved weight over the steel upright, and then added A8 D3 W12 385mm brakes. They are 15.1 in brake rotors vs. the factory 11.3 in rotor. I saved about 2 lbs of weight despite how much bigger the sizes are. I also had to use 18in wheels as thats the smallest size you can use with such massive brakes.

    Driven with a flat run flat, rear of Mini Countryman, 17inch wheels and only 2 miles and side walls already getting pretty warm. Im not convinced they are safe to drive above 30mph for any distance. I find Bridgestone tyres too hard anyway but run flats worse. It is a CON manufacturers dont supply a spare. 1) you probably will need a new tyre if run flat has a puncture 2) A spare wheel does not increase CO2 because it adds very little to weight of cars. 3) Inflation kits are rubbish, damage the tyre and car still might not be driveable whereas with a spare it will..

    Yeah but he’s saying does putting more strain on suspension components because rubber is doing less cushioning. Short answer - legally uncertain, pragmatically you’d get away with it by just putting normal wheels on so there’s no possibility of enforcement. I’d say its biggest problem effects are increasing rotational mass, but on a 4-wheel car this can be compensated via smaller flywheel. 2WD can obviously half that, but means engine and breaks lose performance otherwise. Or rather, engine performance and break capacity are used up carry what you consider to be worth carrying - more rubber. The shock absorbers will wear out faster too; but frankly most people drive cars with bad shocks so if run flat tires push people to get new shocks then ride performance will improve dramatically lol. But in a race situation you want the lightest, most conforming rubber sheet possible. Those Michelin wheels that aren’t pneumatic should in theory be better than runflats.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT IS WHEN YOU GET A FLAT- YOU DON'T GET A FLAT. THAT NIGHTMARE BECOMES A SMILE. I LIVE NEAR THE CITY. ALWAYS GETTING NAILS, AND LEAKS. HAD THREE OF THEM IN A YEAR AND A HALF. EVERYTIME I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME, OR TO A STATION TO FILL IT, AND DRIVE TO HAVE IT PLUGGED. THEY CAN BE PLUGGED. HAD IT DONE THREE TIMES. TWICE ON ONE TIRE. MOST SHOPS WILL TRY AND LIE TO YOU, TO FORCE YOU TO GET NEW TIRES. THEY CAN BE PLUGGED THREE TIMES PER TIRE. FIND SOMEONE WHO SELLS AND INSTALLS THEM. THEY REQUIRE A VERY LARGE MACHINE TO PRESS THEM OFF AND ON. THAT WAY, THEY CAN'T PRETEND THEY CAN'T DO IT. YOU CAN DRIVE UP TO 50MPH. YOU CAN EASILY GET WHERE YOU NEED TO GO. IT'S PRETTY BAD ASS. I'VE CHANGED MANY FLAT TIRES AND BEEN STRANDED MANY TIMES. THING OF THE PAST NOW. HONESTLY, ISN'T IT COOL TO HAVE TIRES THAT CAN'T BE TAKEN OUT, EVEN WITH GUNSHOTS AND SPIKE STRIPS? PURE SAVAGERY. THATS MY EXPERIENCE. I'LL NEVER GO BACK. WHAT I CAN PROMISE YOU? WHEN YOU GET A FLAT WITH RUN FLATS, YOU WILL LAUGH AND SCREAM AS YOU CONTINUE DRIVING YOUR PRECIOUS BABY RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED TO GO. GIVE EM A TRY. GOOD LUCK! PS I'VE HEARD THAT OTHER TIRES ARE SLIGHTLY MORE COMFORTABLE. HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT GETTING STRANDED, OR SMASHING YOUR KNUCKLES REPEATEDLY IN THE DIRT ON A TWENTY DEGREE NIGHT? I WOULDN'T KNOW.....
