25:27 Recommendations & Conclusions
The Fitbit Charge 6 has improved a lot over the Charge 5, at least in some regards, and this mostly seems to have been achieved using software and not hardware improvements. In this video we will be systematically testing the health and sports tracking of the Fitbit Charge 6 to see what its strengths and weaknesses are, to help you decide if the Charge 6 is the right watch for you. Specifically, we will be testing the heart rate tracking performance, comparing the sleep stage tracking to an EEG reference and looking at the consistency of the GPS tracking. Let’s dive in!
The Fitbit Charge 6 looks more-or-less identical to the Charge 5, however, it does seem to have substantially improved. And, as far as I can tell, this is not because of any major change of the internals of this watch, but it seems to be because of better software. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. So let’s get right to those results, and I want to start off by testing the heart rate tracking performance of the Charge 6 during exercise.
OK, what are my conclusions? Well, if you want pretty good heart rate and sleep stage tracking at a reasonable price, the Fitbit Charge 6 is actually a really good choice. I am impressed with what the folks at Google were able to do, with what I think were mostly software improvements. Only the GPS tracking was really disappointing. Not taking into account the GPS tracking, I would give the Charge 6, 4 out of 5 stars. However, given the poor GPS tracking we would have to deduct at least half a star. However, if you do not care about GPS tracking, it is a very solid choice, and given that you can get it on Amazon for around 140 dollars, that’s not bad at all. The main downside of Fitbit Devices in my experience is that they tend to break quite often. Back in the day, a friend of mine went through about 3 to 4 broken Fitbit Ionics, before Fitbit would no longer send replacements. But at the moment both my Charge 6’s are still working, so maybe Fitbit solved that issue.

Rob, the Dreem headband device is still being sold(and even upgraded to Dreem 3), so you should probably look into this. They only stopped selling it for private users(but still offers customer support for owners of the Dreem 2). Since you use it in a professional setting(KZread business), you might even be able to purchase their latest and greatest headband! 😉 BTW. Your original Fitbit Charge 5 review reports much better percentage accuracy numbers for the sleepstage tracking....perhaps you should address this? 🤔😉

Hi! I retested some things or add more nights of data, so percentages might change to be up to date or more complete. Unfortunately that is the best I can do at this stage. I was in contact with Dreem/Beacon, and they would charge me tens of thousands of euros per year, which I cannot afford😅

Nice video like always, I got a charge 6 for Christmas. About the GPS accuracy the few times I used it it was okay (worse than a phone but not all over the place like in the video) but I was using it in an open environment. I think the signals are not powerful so in a city with many buildings it really struggle.

Great video Rob. Android users in the US can throw out Apple and Huawei products. Once you do that, your quality smartwatch/fitness band choices are much more limited. In light of that, the Fitbit Charge 6 definitely offers a great "bang for the buck"...not to mention the possibility of a 1-week battery life.

Sleep most important function, to track, for me, charge 6 looked good in all the graphs [heart rate] except it didn't out-perform and under-performed the inspire 3 and inspire 2, for sleep tracking. Also, if inspire 4 has better HR tracking across sports (like charge6), with it's 1+ week battery, may be good upgrade from inspire 2. Odd inspire 2 still has best sleep tracking on the x-axis from Google/Fitbit. With Inspire3 just marginally behind on xaxis but more consistent on it's worst sleep stage tracking on y-Axis....

How do you get good data out of a Polar H10 for outdoor cycling? I need to soak it in hot water, rub water all over the chest, as otherwise it will be dead and report stupid shit like 70 bpm or 90 bpm when doing 130 bpm. Maybe I need to replace my strap but it works like 80% of the time. Luckily I have power meter pedals so I don't really need HR much for training stress tracking.

I also have ECG contact gel but I don't find it more constructive, it works short term but will dissipate over time as the body dries everything back out again.

I am awaiting with bated breath as my old watch has almost kicked the bucket and so far I like what I've seen from the Oneplus watch 2 but I'd rather get something that will at least somewhat correctly measure my HR when running or cycling 😅 was disappointed to see TicWatch 5 underperform.

I have the charge 6 , this morning I dit a walk on the treadmill, and my heartrate was 95/110 , the last 5 min , I dit very slow walking, normal the heartrate must go low , what it also dit , but then sudden it as around the 140 , and after a couple of seconds it was in the 80 , strange , it’s not the first time that it does like that .

I observed regularly these unexplainable peaks in the measured heartrate during normal walking too. These peaks occurred in two charge 6 I bought. I returned both.

I have found the Charge 6 to be accurate for walks but quite poor for indoor rowing compared to my Polar H10.
