I just bought one of these axes last week. I’m a 60+ old guy 250 pounds and I’ll tell you it made my life a lot more easier… watching you guys huff & puff makes me feel good .. because I huff and puff too. Love you video.

That x27 is a gift from the Finnish Gods 💯

I love my X27, just a wonderful tool. I'd suggest using roundhouse technique as it is more energy efficient, and cut chords off the sides of the rounds which runs along the rings and exploit any natural splits rather than trying to just split it across the middle which is perpendicular to the rings- way easier and works to the X27's strengths.

I have every size of axes and splitting mauls that Fiskars makes. My main go to is the X25. Mostly because I’m only 5’8” and it a good fit for me. I use the X27 on larger items that the X25 won’t get. But I always use a wedge to split large rounds and once they’re halved there’s not too much that my X25 can’t get. The 8lb maul has its uses, but at 63 years old it wears me out very quickly.

I am 62 and use the X25 but the 6lb maul looks like a nice upgrade when working on larger pieces of oak.

​@BlackMan614 Why do people talk like oak is difficult to split. Straight grained Red Oak in particular is very easy to split in my opinion. White Oak isn't difficult either. Obviously knotty pieces make things more difficult, but I consider "hard to split" to be wood like Hickory and Elm. Oak is a dream in comparison. Anyway I have the x27, x25 and the Isocore maul (which I believe is 8 lbs not 6) and my favorite is definitely the x25. Just finished a Shagbark Hickory using the x25 almost exclusively. If it can deal with big rounds of Hickory it won't have a huge problem with most other woods (except Elm, as Chris from In the Woodyard would say, SATAN WOOD 🤬😆)

@@AnarchAngel1 I have an x25 and it was practically worthless on the 100 year old oak (which had been sitting for 2+ years on the ground in a flood zone soaking up moisture) and was knotty. 6lb maul was do-able. Compared to Ash and Beech? White oak was painful.

@@BlackMan614 Like any wood knots make a big difference I'll give you that. Splitting a forest grown White Oak compared to an open grown White Oak is a very different experience. The tall forest grown stuff pops apart in the most satisfying way, the open grown stuff can be a real pain in the ass for sure. White Oak is pretty dominant in my area and I've done a lot of them. We don't have Beech around here and I agree Ash is pretty nice to split most of the time

@@AnarchAngel1 This was white oak forest grown - eastern appalachian mountains. PITA. 6lb maul worked ok... X25... forget it. Spoiled by the Ash. You can usually split those with 2 or 3 whacks. Oak is more like 9 or 10 and that's starting on the outside! Overwhelmed with Ash right now due to emerald ash borer.

I was rooting for you guys on every swing. Looked like lots of work. Good comparison!

X27 remains at the top in my book 🤣, yeah lot of manual labor for us..not very good at it

Watching the large rounds at the end makes me feel better cause i have ash rounds larger than that and took me forever to split it down the middle too lol

Keep those heads sharp (and lightly oiled - will help with the sticking and avoid rust too)

The friska maul was the best i got one and i hit like a fright train 1 or 3 hits i cut wood in half the maul is number one and its manly your a pure man if you use the maul

The maul took more swings! The x27 is unbeatable with anything you put in on

I can swing the X27 all day and remain within my physical limits. I don't get wiped out they way I would if I was moving more weight. The X27 will do almost everything I need it to do. It's lighter so I can move it faster and more accurately. For the really big rounds, I use wedges and an eight-pound sledge hammer. You see young guys on jobs who bite off too much and are spent after an hour. They have to watch the old guys keep going all day and out-work them. You learn stuff.

Hit the same area crack it. That hit ones and make line method is nuts, first crack it then hit and proceed the step, easy peasy. Use heavy mauls use the weight of maul and use skill to crack don't use lots of energy because it is tiring. Be wise if you are tired take rest, you need focus and concentration, the chance of getting injury is more when a person is tired.

what kind of wood is that fellas? It looked pretty straight grain, but it's making you boys work. LOL

I wonder what difference it would make if the temp was 0⁰ F?

You need the 8lb Maul from Fiskars

There is a 8 lb Husky and it work good

Believe it or not the handle makes all the difference, I’m not a fan of wooden handles

Hey boys. I swear by my 28" fiskars. Tried tested and true. Cant beat the price, split nice and tough. And you used good test pieces, not like some people on KZread, splitting cedar with their wood bullet and bragging about there $600 axe haha. Good show fellas. Catch ya on the next one. Kenny

Is the wood that tough or are you making it look that tough?😅 I have had ash that was hard to slab off the outside so I know it can be a pain. I hand split up until this July and I did 100 full cord a year and that was from December to April 1st so I was pretty good at it and I would challenge anyone I’ve saw split wood on KZread. I do have some videos on KZread. I have the eight pound fiskars and the x27 and I can split anything with the x27 that I can split with the 8 pound.

Winter months better time to split firewood with an axe, Gus need more time in the woodyard build up set off arms muscle. Stick the axe into block off firewood and swing the block over your head . Should break on each crack boys . We know who the strongest brother in the woodyard. Do Gus smoke? short on his air intake lol 😊. Now we know why Andrew made an EASTONMADE wood splitter.

Hickory handles break. Fiberglass handles break too. Isocore can take the beating, and without transferring the shock into your forearms!

Great video but....I'm pretty sure that Fiskars says the maul is 8 pounds, and the X27 is 6 pounds (aka 2.7kg...hence X27). I'm sticking with the X27, the oak around me isn't real big in diameter, but it's a bit tougher to split than ash.

The 6 pound maul is pretty new. I have the 8 pound one and just ordered the 6 pound one. I would've bought the 6 pound one if it was available a few years ago when I bought the 8 pounder.

Rick! Testing purposes call for hard work 🤣. I agree though, too big of stuff for me to split, noodle time or throw it on the splitter.
