I had to stop watching the Anime all together at this point due to how slow it was as well. I had been switching back to and from it, but just to note for anyone watching along, I recommend going manga for this arc. Also I want to clarify that the themes here were a plenty, I just don’t feel they ended up complimenting the overall narrative well enough and it all just slowed to an unjustified pace.

Just a point about Hody Jones. He's not supposed to be deadly, and he's not supposed to have great convictions. Hody Jones is basically the guy that is angry for someone else. He's the one whose hatred isn't even his own, which is why his will is so weak and in turn, his power. Just like his hate isn't his own, not even his power is really, as he takes those drugs to boost himself and not even that's enough. Everything about him is shallow, from his convictions to his powers, and that's ultimately the whole point of his character in this story. He's the shadow of Arlong's conviction, Arlong's hatred. The seed of evil, Arlong's ideas breed. Evil even worse than he was, not in might, but in ideals. He's not supposed to be strong, or justified. That's the opposite of his point in the story. The true villain in this arc was the hatred, was the racism infested in the fishmen(and the world at large that helped spurn it to begin with.). Which is what's defeated in the end by Luffy. Which doesn't work for everyone, but in my eyes it's an incredibly nuanced take and something I've never seen in an anime before. But for what Oda was trying to portray, what he was trying to do? He did it perfectly. It goes to show that you really don't need a Big Bad stronger than the last arc, in a shounen while still having a decent story. Sure is it my favorite? No. But in all honestly, I think Oda was ahead of his time with this arc in the sense of how modern this feels. Definitely doesn't work for everyone, it's very *different* rather than a normal arc, even for one piece.

I disagree heavily(however bringing two of the best arcs in the series doesn't help said argument, as almost every arc is trash compared to Marineford.). Fact of the matter is, there is no 'nah' here. I stated some facts about what they couldn't make Hody stronger, or his convictions more reasonable. It would break the story. Another missed point is while yeah the hody on land maybe easier than fighting a pacifista, fighting in the water makes it much closer. Hody gains huge buffs, while the luffy gets huge needs. Even Zoro, without the devil fruit curse, is nerfed due to his speed and mobility being cut down.

I definitely understand your opinions toward this arc. Personally, I had to have multiple rereads until I started to appreciate the choice Oda makes about making Hody a hollow character. It follows the theme of inherited will throughout One Piece. The moment Hody said that humans never did anything to him, it brings me back to the story in my country about two tribes who hated each other because of a conflict in the past. The current generation of those tribes rarely of maybe even never interact with each other, yet the hate/prejudice is still there to this day purely because of the inherited stories from the past. In other words, their "hatred" really is just an empty shell.

I actually agree with a lot of your review. But I have to say I love what's being done here on a thematic level. "How to combat racism. What the flaws and pitfalls are in the various approaches in doing so. How social injustices can lead to further factors allowing intergenerational transmission of racism to exist. What the consequences are if societies fail to recognise their own faults. How important it is to promote a culture of open-mindedness in a society. What impacts a child's education can have, detrimental or beneficial, on the future of a minority social group. How moving forward and attempting to bridge gaps is NOT clear cut, and the complexity in addressing the lingering attachment to the horrific aspects of the past. How geopolitics influences the status of certain social groups, and how racism stems from those inequalities. How those same systems and laws which propel injustices can be modified, and how engagement in political discourse by a minority group on a global scale is not always futile. And how important it is for an oppressed minority to secure a platform for social and political discourse, and the struggles necessary, and the sheer effort and time and blood it takes" These themes, how comprehensive they are, and the depths they are explored in, are the closest a fictional representation to a realistic issue can get in my estimation. I genuinely think that the thematic subtext of this arc and how the overall fishman-human conflict is handled in the entire story is some of the most delicately written, and beautifully executed in the series.

As someone who is caught up with the anime and manga I definitely recommend sticking with just the manga. If you thought Fishman Island was slow in the anime, it gets a lot, lot, lot worse. THere are a few moments from each arc that are AMAZING in the anime, but the animation quality does go downhill, although this has to do with the studio wanting to save on the budget for each episode since the arcs get very drawn out so as to not catch up with the manga, which makes sense.

Hody doesn't hate just because, he was radicalized. He inherited Arlong's will instead of Fisher Tiger's because Arlong learned the wrong lesson from Tiger. Hody's motivation and the exploration of radicalization is solid, but he just ends up being a pushover and it weakens the racism allegory. Hody is so weak to an outside savior but the fishmen still aren't strong enough to save themselves. Hody being a weak villain strength-wise is for sure a problem for the arc that just undercuts the strong themes being explored

Crocodile never had any real sympathetic or interesting motivations because people still live him because of his charisma and demeanor. Hody can be looked at as an interesting character if given the whole contextual knowledge but that's not what happens and his function in the story isn't like a flashback where you get the opportunity to dissect his character, he's the main villain of the arc. The villain is meant to act as an obstacles to the protagonists and he does nothing special as an obstacle, he's just bland and a pushover. Making a character weak to show growth can work but not for someone who's supposedly a huge threat and is built up the entire arc

So I'm not the biggest fan of Hody either, but the best argument I've heard for him as a villain was that he was meant to be a bit underwhelming. 1) Because in this first real arc with the crew back together Oda wanted to showcase how strong they are so he made a villain + crew the SH's would completely wash. And 2) Hody's whole theme of his power, literally and metaphorically, not being his own and poisoning him over time. Literally in the form of the power pills he took to become stronger that were killing him and metaphorically because his hatred of humans came from when he was a kid basically living vicariously through guys like Arlong, Jinbei, & Fisher Tiger who actually were enslaved and were really out here putting in the work. Hody never knew Tiger personally really he just knew the idea of Tiger and what he was doing from his perspective so because of that he missed the message and became even more radicalized than Arlong as a result.

Specifically, everything relating to the Fisher Tiger flashback. It's a shame that people who are outside the One Piece bubble tend to conflate the loudness with simplicity. Pun intended.

It's a great video that ties all the themes together and I think it can give you a better appreciation of the arc. Honestly I get your criticisms but to me the fact that Oda wanted to go a different narrative route by writing a shallow villain on purpose in order to push the themes upfront, is really impressive on its own, because it shows to me that he has the confidence to write an interesting story with "uninteresting" villains, and for me it worked great. Now it may come from the fact that I've re-read the arc and have wider understanding of the series but all-in-all the arc for me is a 9. Exactly. Jody isn’t the core of things, he is a symptom of the injustices against the fish men and how the hatred and pain of that resulted in his own hatred and pain consuming him. The story is about the fish men as a whole and their relationship with people , from the kingdom dealing with the world government and pirates like Big Mom, to more so the fish men and their descrimination and the aftereffects of that pain. The racism and pain inflicted resulted in someone like arlong inflicting his pain in Nami and her people. And the fish men continue to feel the affects of that racism and how each one deals with it and their society.

Fishman Island is one of those arcs that get way better with re-reads. When encountering it for the first time, it's following some of the most significant, action packed arcs, and is the first arc where you get the crew back post-timeskip. You _want_ to see them fight against powerful enemies and have exciting adventures but it isn't what you get here, leading to a lot of disappointment. You want to jump back into the old arc structure but that's not what Oda wanted in this part of the story. Once you've read past and aren't craving for action, returning to Fishman Island and experiencing the detail in the narrative is a treat.

I dunno if you noticed but I’d like to add: The SH were never meant to meet Fisher Tiger since his impact to the current storyline is his actions in the past rippling through time. Him and Otohime represent 2 factions of fishmen doing what they think is best to end racism against their people. Otohime is someone based on MLK, who wants integration while Fisher Tiger represents Malcolm X who wants complete separation. Their actions and dreams are interpreted and inherited by people through time and those characters act in the best way they can interpret that inherited will. By the way ‘Inherited Will’ is one of the biggest themes presented in One Piece. You can go back from the very first arc up until the most recent ones and this theme is always there.

I wouldn't say Fisher Tiger was quite an advocate of separation. He is the man who gave Koala his emblem to give her the same freedom as the other Sun Pirates. But unfortunately, there was a festering wound of hatred buried deep within him. In a moment of weakness, it prevented him from being saved and his crew loved him too much to tarnish his legacy. Arlong and Jimbei both inherit Tiger's will. Arlong passes on his hatred to Hody and brands Nami as his servant. Jimbei rises above his Captain's weakness and does what Tiger couldn't. All Hody ever manages is destroying the hope of his own people.

Luffy must defeat the hatred first (become the hero as human) before defeat hordy jones. If luffy just KO hordy jones before jinbe make luffy look like a hero to the fishmen, it will not solved the problems, it will just create another hordy jones. So this is not something you can solve by brute force. Luffy didn't even show his strongest attack as result of training in 2 years. I really like how Oda developed this over the whole series of related arcs (Arlong Park, Sabaody, Amazon Lily, and now this) At first, our only exposure to the fishmen is as these violent, racist monsters that we're led to hate. But then in Sabaody and Amazon Lily we find out more about the dynamics in the world and the atrocities the humans have committed, and the fishmen become more sympathetic figures. _This_ is the point where most stories would stop though, and leave it as this sort of wishy-washy "racism bad, but in both directions!" sort of thing. But Oda really opens the floodgates in FI, giving us a better look at their history and how nuanced the situation is, the evils of institutionalized/systemic racism, and how even both "sides" of this struggle can have their own factions. Fisher Tiger and Otohime both have the same end goal (the freedom and security of their people) but pursue them in different ways. Both ideologies have their positives and negatives, and both lead to unintended consequences down the line (good and bad), and their actions ultimately result in the situation we have today, for good and for bad. IMO, this is all leading up to the _real_ emotional climax of the arc - when Nami hears Jinbei's story, and how _his_ actions led to terrible consequences for her and her village/family, and she _chooses to forgive him._ Then we get the reveal that Arlong Park was modeled after Sabaody Park, and that + the rest of the flashback recontextualizes Arlong and his crew so well. While it doesn't _justify_ his views/beliefs, it at least _explains_ them a bit more and lends so much nuance to the situation.

Also, this whole series of arcs does a good job of putting us in the shoes of the East Blue characters, as they travel the world and learn more about the history and the dynamics at play. This is one of Oda's greatest skills: Each arc adds more context to the ones that came before and gives us a whole new perspective on the characters/events at play, while still remaining consistent and not retconning things.

Just know that with each low an arc takes Oda is probably working for the next ark to make it 10 times great than the previous best arc as you will see in the next upcoming arc. And don't worry he generally ties up these not so great parts from these arcs to future arcs pretty neatly to satisfyingly great moments and improves the arc during the reread.

It's most likely the latter, I can remember my younger self disliking the arc for similar reasons when reading it for the first time because coming out of the time-skip, what you wanted in the moment is to see the strawhats fight and overcome overpowered new world antagonists. It's very easy to internally build up huge expectations for the battles in this arc and be disappointed, and in frustration miss a lot of the more nuanced narratives in the arc. I've since learned to appreciate the arc in re-reads, but I don't blame first time readers for missing the details. Merphy seems to be absolutely in love with the series/Oda's writing and is paying huge attention to detail while reading, which is probably why she picked it all out on her first readthrough.

Maybe binging is a different experience, I dunno. But I will say this: For most of post TS, the payoffs will be much much further than they were pre TS, since Oda’s building up to close major plot threads in multiple sagas unlike in pre TS where it was more on exploration of the world, so I hope you can be a little bit more patient Daniel. I really love your reviews but I’m pretty sure the highs you felt in every arc pre TS won’t get reached until a few more arcs.

I'm glad you made the point that you can see it working better on rereads. It's slowly become one of my favorite arcs and I think once you understand what Hody's purpose is after your expectations are shifted, it works much better overall. Especially for the themes on how his hatred is brittle and weak he's made to be a hollow villain that's more a reflection of how their society has failed its people. And I also love the difference between him and Arlong in that Arlong very clearly cared for his other Fishmen while Hody was someone who just wanted to hate and had no love for the people around him unless they conformed to his worldview. Definitely though common thoughts most people had with Fishman Island their first time through and it's why rereading is sometimes the best part of One Piece. Thanks for another great review as always.

I'll be honest the next arc has a few problems as well, something that seems consistent about Post-TS One Piece is that the panels themselves are chock-full of information. There are panels that you would imagine would look so much better blown up in a full page and letting the reader just consume it. In some ways the anime will do that better than the manga (because they have to else they risk catching up to the manga) and I have heard _rumours(!)_ that Oda wants to finish One Piece in a decent time and with all his ideas he needs to have more information filled chapters.

  • @aesdrag0n496

    @aesdrag0n496

I agree with what you're saying about the anime doing some things (like portraying the full scope of very dense panels) better than the anime. However the MAJOR drawback to this is the fact that these panels/chapters as a whole are drawn out to excruciating lengths in order to pad the runtime of the anime. Not gonna name arcs/characters so as to not spoil anything for anyone whose caught up but those who know, know what I'm talking about. As for rumours of Oda finishing the manga, there was a comment made by one of the editors(?)/himself in an SBS that he plans to finish it in 5 years time. The way I (and from what I gather a vast majority of the fanbase) view the timeframe in which he plans to finish is 5-6 years AFTER the current arc has ended, which puts the end somewhere around 2027-2028, given that at its current pace and with Oda now taking regular breaks (which he definitely deserves) the current arc won't finish until early 2022, which seems reasonable as it will have gone for 30 years at that point.

Oda has actually been pretty consistent with his predictions on when he'll end it. As much as it seems like a never-ending story sometimes, he knows the plan. I'm not sure it's great to say anything here, but if you search something like "When will One Piece end?" you'll find one of the first links has a summary with source links to where he's stated the timeframe.

I think I just find awesome to just look back on things Oda said in previous chapeters and be like, daaaaamn. That might also be because I read one piece thourgh looong years, so I had to rediscover things all over again pretty often. But I liked just counting the ancestral weapons and list everything we know about them, it makes me get hyped up because the crew seems pretty involved with that particular plotline, and I cant wait to find out more about them.

It's known by fans that Hody is a weak villain, but I figured him being so hollow was kind of the point? His racism and ignorance has no true source like it did for Arlong, he was just hateful because people before him were hateful. Oda also couldn't make Hody interesting by being super strong because post time skip we expect the Straw Hats to be comfortably stronger than their initial opponents, hence the use of the drugs as artificial strength to make Hody an actual challenge to Luffy. Edit: You also made a good point about wanting to see the other straw hats fight a bit. Against the Pacifista we only saw Luffy/Zoro/Sanji

I feel like he has a far stronger opinion on what things _should_ be like in the story and express dissatisfaction when they aren't the way they wanted it, kind of similar to Totally not Mark's review. When they praise the series, it's quite often followed by a big _but_... , which can be a bit grating to hear as fans. In contrast Merphy seems much more willing to let Oda lead and doesn't seem to mind nearly as much when her theories/expectations don't come true. Merphy is also way more open about showing her emotions during the more moving scenes in the story, but I don't blame Daniel for the difficulty men have with showing more tender emotions. I think as fans of the series it's inevitable we enjoy Merphy's style of review more (since we like to hear OP praised), but both styles are valid.

@@indigo1296 another problem is that his positive judgements are more related to the moments with intense hype, it is understandable but you cant have peak moments with build ups such as the return to shabondy, you have to start to add little by little, but that doesn't mean that an arc with less intensity is worse. Totally not mark is just the same (not true, he is worse by far), if there is hype it is a 10, if there is a build up the "yes-it-is-nice-buts" begin. Merphy is different because it focuses more on the characters and the little details that give context to the story, it is much more satisfying.
