I like how in One Piece pirates aren't necessarily thieves. Being a pirate in One Piece means saying that you are not part of the World Government. And this is enough for them to hunt you down and kill you. For some people the only freedom they can have is being a pirate.

The Usopp/Luffy conflict is actually one of my favorite beats in One Piece. On the one hand you're angry at Usopp because he's clearly being unreasonable, but on the other hand you know that he's only flying off the handle like this because he's come to associate the Merry with his own place on the crew. His girlfriend got them the ship, he's the one who handles upkeep, and that's given him a role even as the others are rapidly surpassing his abilities. But now the ship is broken, and to make matters worse, Usopp - who's basically been a poser this whole time, trying desperately to seem stronger/more experienced than he is - has been humiliated and exposed as a liability. He was beaten and robbed by a gang that the rest of the crew crushes like an empty soda can. Usopp has no more lies to hide behind - he's failed as a warrior and apparently as a shipwright as well. He's at his lowest ebb. But the fight that follows gives the audience an intimation that there is hope for Usopp - he has possibilities. Yeah, of course Luffy holds back, and Usopp takes advantage of knowing Luffy's style, but it also shows us that when Usopp is finally backed into a corner and stripped of all his pretense, there are glimmers of more ability than we (or even he) might have expected.

Gear 2nd actually had a decent bit of setup, but it's easy to overlook: 1. The monologue Crocodile gave him about the importance of learning to use his fruit more creatively and get stronger got him thinking 2. The crew getting absolutely _wrecked_ by Aokiji (and then CP9) made him realize he needed something new in his arsenal 3. The fight with Bellamy (spring guy) on Jaya gave him the inspiration for the move itself... notice how he does the exact same pose/leg-pump? It's a good example of Luffy's creativity in combat, and the fact that he's a lot more observant/intelligent than he seems on the surface (in some ways)

"Masked figure that is very clearly Usopp." Understandable mistake given you going back and forth between the manga and anime. That masked figure is actually Sogeking. He's a friend of Usopp's. On a more realistic note. Luffy's new power was something he started working on after the fight with Aokiji because he realized he needed to be much stronger to protect his crew after they all lost against the Admiral. So between Long Ring Long Land and Water 7 was when he was training. Similar things happened with the rest of the crew trying to make themselves stronger after that loss. Oda skipped over the training because it wasn't terribly important to the story and given the nature of the target audience (young boys in Japan) having big reveals of powerups during tense fights is necessary. Also, Nami's new skills are only possible with the improvements to her weapon made by Usopp and the technology they found on Sky Island. Since you're aware there is a timeskip. I will say that most fans rank this Saga as the best (or tied for best) in the stuff that happens before the timeskip, so it makes sense that you would rate this as a 10/10, and why so many people were waiting for you to reach this arc. I'm glad you're willing to look past the Usopp hate a little bit. I can understand with all the pushback from the comments saying you'll love him eventually that you would want to stick to what you already believed. The apology while making gagging noises is a funny compromise to both those ends. (I'd also like to note that the person that heard the Going Merry call out to them was Usopp. And he was the one who told the crew to jump into the sea, and they all did it without hesitating, because they trust each other.)

Oda has also admitted he just doesn't like training arcs. He thinks that they ruin the "surprise" of the technique that the characters are going to use to defeat the bad guy. It's probably also why Oda almost never has that "power-up = easy beatdown" and treats it more as this new power-up is simply evening the playing field.

the way I see it, luffy wasn't training offscreen (especially since he said the CP9 fight was what gave him the idea for gear second, which wouldn't make sense to train timeframe wise) he just...got an idea of how to play with his rubber pwers. and because of how devil fruits, especially paramecias like luffy's, work, he can just...do it. Because he decided he could try it.

I get that but a little more of a hint would be nice. Rather then having Luffy say "I have been working on this since Aokiji" when it is revealed maybe show five minutes of Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji working out a bit. With Zoro its fine because we actually do often see him training, but even a 5 min sparring match between the three would have been nice. Just something to really show that they were working to become stronger.

The reason Usopp was so upset by the situation with Merry was that he was afraid of the crew abandoning him. He knows that he isn't strong and hasn't done that much so when he sees how (seemingly) easily the others let go of Merry, he realises that the same thing could happen to him aswell. Also Merry was a gift from his friend Kaya so he has a stronger connection to the ship because of that too. As to his fight with Luffy, he's taking it very seriously, because his beloved ship is on the line, and he actually had prep time so I don't think it's weird that he managed to hold it against Luffy for a while.

Add onto this that Usopp knows how Luffy fights, so he knew exactly what he needed to do to counter Luffy. Usopp may not be the strongest fighter, but he’s a clever strategist, and since he has time to prepare, it actually ends up giving him an edge over Luffy, who was certainly holding back where Usopp wasn’t. Of course, Usopp’s strategy could only get him so far in the end because once Luffy stops pulling his punches, Usopp doesn’t really stand a chance anymore.

There's a lot of reasons to why ussop reacted the way he did -ussop has a special relationship with merry, it was given to them by his girl -he saw the klabbauterman and sees the merry as kind of alive -he sees himself in the merry, a guy from a tiny village that shouldn't be on the grand line and Luffy replacing the ship makes him very insecure about himself.

I think it’s pretty clear Merphy has started taking her reviews much more seriously whereas these are still half-assed. It’s pretty clear he skimmed Usopp’s Water 7 narrative. It’s not even about a subjective opinion. There are literal story beats which would have made Usopp’s POV much more sensible had attention been paid. You can still come away from Water 7 disliking Usopp, but to say it makes no sense demonstrates a lack of attention.

@GCP2 Okay? I don’t care if he gives it a 1, 4, 7, 10, or 42. He’s posting a spoiler review, but he crams two major arcs into one video, clearly skimmed a lot of the content (I’m not the only one who noticed), and skipped tons of relevant content. As a review, it was barely organized and felt like a cheap way to draw the eyes of the One Piece community to make money off the ad revenue. Truth be told, I understand KZreadrs like MerphyNapier and TotallyNotMark also want to make that sweet ad revenue, and I’m fine with it. They have created some great content and it truly seems as if they care (even if they are faking it). Daniel’s reviews kind of come off as uninspired. It’s as if he sees his contemporaries having success and is trying to cash in, but not really putting in the same commitment. I love hearing other people’s thoughts on series I love because they give me new things to think about and look at it from new perspectives. Daniel’s video this week didn’t offer that. Daniel may have given it a 10/10 (which seems odd considering how much he criticized it), but I’ll give his review a 6/10.

The thing about Usopp is that you also condemn him for being so determined to keep the ship, but I think it makes him a lot more real for me. He can make mistakes, he isn’t perfect, he isn’t always right, but seeing him learn from his mistakes and move on is some amazing development. Usopp doesn’t have to be strongest, but I can relate to him a lot and I find him quite funny. This is why he is one of my favourite characters, also his post time skip designs are great.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned that Usopp saw the spirit of the Going Merry in Skypiea. Like, the others all say that the ship was a part of the crew, but Usopp is the only one who saw that the ship was a real, living being with a soul and hopes and sadness, and they've been managing to keep on going because Usopp was the one keeping her together. Of course he's going to be the only one freaking out when the others can easily move on: to them it's just a ship, to him, she's a friend he's been keeping on life support for months, and he's being told that she can't get help because she's no longer useful.

I would bet real money most of us would be screaming our heads off right along Usopp if put in this scenario. Great review Daniel. I am stoked that you are up to this point in the story. I do have to chime in on the Usopp piece, but hopefully it is not obnoxious. I mostly just think its great narrative conversation. Others have noted the insecurity piece in relation to his feelings about the Merry so I won't beat that to death, but I think there has to be some recognition of the story beats Oda gave Usopp in this saga. First, his conversation with Robin as Sogeking and telling her to "Believe in Luffy." I find this moment to be extremely powerful as the mask allows Usopp to make this statement not only to Robin, but to himself. Additionally, the fact that is was Usopp who got Luffy to get up and finish off Lucci. His impact in that fight of being able to push Luffy beyond his boundaries really makes his strength as a member of the crew on display and I think it brought that arc to a full circle in a masterful way. Again, great review. I hope you continue to enjoy the story and I am looking forward to the rest of your videos!

I second this. It was i think the very first time when he strongly opposed Luffy, solidifying the crew himself and making point that it's not a play but serious business. Never has Zoro played such role before, no one also had such strong statement. It really is a breakthrough for Zoro's character, from being just a muscle, to being the backbone of the Strawhats.

As for the reason Usopp stood any sort of chance against Luffy, Usopp has been fighting alongside Luffy for long enough to know his techniques and abilities very intimately and have at least an idea on how to counter them. It would be the equivalent of playing Civ against a close friend. Just because you rush the Great Library so that he won't get it like he always does doesn't mean he won't win, but it will put a wrinkle in his usual strategy and maybe put you ahead of them for a few turns.

Usopp put up a fight against Luffy and how it made sense is because he knows Luffy. He knows how Luffy is as a fighter. Usopp is very familiar with Luffy's moves and technique and that gave him an edge because as a crew-member, he sees that. That just proves to the audience that if Usopp is given an enemy that he can prepare for, he can do it and defeat an enemy pretty well because of how resourceful he is as a fighter.

There's another reason Usopp reacted the way he did, other than the fact that it was a gift from his childhood friend, Kaya, there is reason #2: There's a parallel between Ussop and The Going Merry. He (most likely subconsciously) views The Going Merry as himself. At this point in the series, Ussop is considered probably the weakest of the crew, and he is constantly and ever-so-painfully aware of this. So to him, seeing Luffy having to replace Merry at its weakest point (even if he doesn't want to), makes Ussop think that he himself is probably expendable to the crew too. So he is reacting in such a way that he is worried, saddened but honestly knowing deep down (yet outwardly denying) that it is inevitable and knows it HAS to happen, and his reaction and what unfolded next was his way of grieving/coping. Which is what makes the part when he dives into the canal when talking with Franky and says something like "you don't think I know that??" when Franky says the ship is beyond repair, hit so much harder. He just needed time to accept it. Also regarding him being ashamed to show his face was actually a sign of how much integrity and loyalty he has: I saw a comment on another video that Usopp is incredibly cowardly but when his team needs him, he steps up, regardless of how he has to do it--even if he has to wear a mask and create a whole 'nother persona to do it :) Honestly I wasn't always a big fan of Ussop, but this arc really made me respect him so much more!! :)
