The thing I felt about Hody and the New Fishman Pirates is they are never meant to be threatening. This is the Strawhat's grand reunion tour, it was never going to tell the story of a true threat along the lines of Crocodile, CP9 and Doflamingo. I always felt that the New Fishman Pirates would have been on that level if the Strawhats had arrived without the time-skip, but as villains their purpose is to show how much the Strawhats have grown, not to provide a threat.

alexweirdyoung Maybe but I thoughts that’s what the Pacifistas were for, when the entire crew couldn’t defeat them together it was suppose to show the growth from them to now.

The idea of Hody doing all of his actions just out of the hatred he absorbed from the people of the fishman district is something I like actually and something that happens in the real world more often than you think and I respect Oda for trying to show that to us in One Piece. Not that I like his character much either but him having no backing for his actions was fine for me.

The Tea Party mentioned here and the Whole Cake Island one are totally separate events. It has been a smaller timeframe, but 4 days is impossible because the Strawhats were on Dressrosa a minimum 4 days due Fujitora refusing to capture them 3 different times.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised

I can still fill all the hype I felt back when I first watched the fish man island arc. Just seeing everyone demolishing 100,000 people and the fodder main villains was just mind blowing to me.

You know what is terrifying about Hody Jones? You can actually meet him in real life. A Person who despises, hates and even kills for no reason or just because they where raised to do so. I think Oda intended Hody as a reflection of a real world Problem. Has anyone ever meet someone like Hody? I hope not.

I think I heard a story from the highschool years from a famous Jewish philosopher. His classmates got a bad grade on a test, so he naturally blamed the Jews (?). When questioned he confessed that maybe it wasn't the Jews' fault, maybe he just should have studied. I loved Hody's "Nothing", I have a lot of homophobic friends who know 2 gay people, both of which "are of the normal ones", and yet they are really homophobic. The "nothing" resonates a lot with my experience.

Well you can't really blame him since he was stuck in hell for 2 years with Okamas training and hasn't seen (real) boobs in a long time. Note: he knows that Ivankov can change a person's gender easily, but in his mind, he still sees the the okamas as guys, even if they were changed into girls. (This is just an observation and not my personal opinion).

Oh don't get me wrong, i like the gag itself, but cases like "oh, this gag caused the plot to drag a bit more" is where i think it just doesn't apply, there are cases where it can work, like his fight against Mr. 2, that was a good use of it since it wasn't just Sanji's pervert thing, his character is that he won't hurt a woman. We could have skipped the part of him dying of nosebleed, but kept him turning into stone thanks to Shirahoshi's beauty. Just that particular use was the lowest point for me in this arc, aside from Hody obviously lol.

Good concept but horrid execution

One purpose of caribou was as a response to a certain idea, specifically the idea that logia fruits were more powerful than the other two types of devil fruit especially zoan. Caribou thought that he was guaranteed to be this epic powerful dude because he had a logia power, but then Pekoms a mere zoan was able to beat him pretty easily. This was our wake-up call that, yes, in the New World, logias are not untouchable.

Also Caribou is a character that was added for the cover page stories. For those that don't read the manga. At the start of a chapter Oda will, most of the time, use the cover page of the chapter as glimpse to other places of the world and follow up on other characters. Caribou is one such character. we see that he gets turned in to the marines by Jimbe, his crew comes to rescue him, he escapes by betraying them. He flees and ends up in fucking Wano were he then gets eaten by Xdrake. This device shows what all these characters are doing when the strawhats aren't around. Caribou will show up again.

What i love about fishman island is that it's this mysterious island that's been teased since water 7, and there's plenty of build up to it between water 7 and the fishman island arc, like how the straw hats were gonna go there after thriller bark, but instead ended up having to go to sabaody

I was so excited for fishman island because of this buildup, but was ultimately disappointed because to me, the pacing made me very uninvested in the story 😖

1. The tea party in four days is a different Tea Party. The one Luffy attends is in approximately two to three weeks later. 2. I adore Shirahoshi (subjective, I realise) but even I can realise she is not automatically more important than the warlords/yonkous/Straw Hats (looks at Robin) purely because she's Poseidon. Also, I believed this plot twist was brilliant. I'm not sure how you were unhappy with it. 3. Caribou is aware that Shirahoshi is Poseidon, making him a highly important character moving forward, especially as he was taken by Drake. Oda did this very purposefully. How could you forget about it? 4. While I agree the enemies were scrubs, but they were made this way to highlight the crew's power post-timeskip. It wasn't bad character design. 5. I agree that Sanji's nosebleeds got old fast. 6. I also agree that this arc is gonna become hella relevant in the series' future. HELLA RELEVANT.

Dude. Where everything is right now.....Yeah. Its become possibly one of the MOST relevant arcs. Shriahoshi being Poseidon also takes on a new meaning. Hell HORDY became more relevant.

I’ve finally reached this arc In the anime, I liked it but I think it dragged on for about 10 episodes too long, they definitely dragged this one out longer than it needed to be and this is why I continue to hope that OP gets a DBZ Kai treatment. I also thought it was pretty obvious from the jump that the bad guys here were just meant to showcase the new power ups from the straw hats. At no point I thought any member was in danger.

The arc reminds me so much of Skypeia actually. Tended to drag on a little more than most. Some episodes where it's like did we really need this?

and Now looking back this is probably one of the most important arcs in the grand scheme As for me personally, does drag places but i love the underwater atheistic, some great comedy parts, the whole Noah falling finale, the backstory with Fisher Tiger , the strawhats showing off their new skills (mostly franky's tech xD) and the set up for the grand finale in form of Poseidon and Joy Boy introductions.

I get this feeling that Oda himself didn't really account for how long it would take the readers to get to Wholecake nor did he plan for the teaparty to be about Sanji getting married. Keep in mind that the Navy just found out that Sanji was alive that very day. This is the "5 minute countdown on Namek" all over again.

I always thought of the Fishman Island as a way to show off the growth of the Straw Hats, not as a real conflict. It was a chance to flex their muscles before they actually went to the new world, especially in an arena where they had a disadvantage. In that regard, I like Fishman Island cause I got to see the real difference between the Straw Hats of 2 years ago and the ones now.

I really liked the journey to fishman island as well, it reminded me of the journey to skypiea in just how creative and interesting it was. Also, though Caribou felt a bit pointless throughout the arc, his overhearing that Shirahoshi is an ancient weapon could mean big things, especially since he was captured by Drake!

Just finished the arc. Usually I wouldn't comment my thoughts but I think it should be because this arc has a great bit to offer. My thoughts are that it was great. The sanji parts were to much but they brought the attention of the law against giving blood to humans. But as a whole this arc should sorely be based on the message on racism and the development from the time skip as well as the tide turning moments this arc had to offer. Which was so beyond well put. Now I will say hordy and all the villains were not the best. But I feel like they were made that way because of the time skip, to show how strong the group got. Not more so focused on an OP villain, but instead that the straw hats have grown so strong they took them on like nothing. Honestly if this first arc coming back had they fought someone OP as hell it would have probably diminished the 2 years of training they did. Instead this shows the new skill sets and strengths greatly with fighting just a strong group. Going into the new world I am ready to see some new OP characters that will push them farther. This is my first run through of one piece and I love this journey and cant wait to see what's next. But to conclude it all the message brought in this arc was powerful. The villains were not the best but they did justice to show the developments during the time skip. If they came back and starting losing off the bat, what did they train for? New world new people. Grand line ended with them walking on average Joe's. And that's okay with me.

This is my favorite arc tbh I just like it for some reason. Every time I try to get back into one piece I start from return to sabody so I’ve rewatched this several times and still enjoy it

I have a feeling when Shirahoshi goes into ancient weapon mode in the final arc, we're going to see a VERY different Shirahoshi. :P And will laugh that we thought she was just a crybaby.

in my opinion this arc is all about the flashbacks and the straw hats showing off how powerful they got in the timeskip, the villain itself is not that great, and also the ending is awesome, jinbe giving blood to luffy and him asking to join his crew is also an amazing moment

4 days for from Fishman to whole cake? Watching a Dressrosa Episode feels like 4 days...

jinbei is my favorite character in thr show! hes such a badass and when how he left big moms crew was so sick

The only "bad" part about this arc which really bothered me was Sanji's over the top nosebleed. That was honestly so irritating but other than that, it was thematically one of THE best arcs in OP, without a queation. I think the only people who hate this arc are the guys who care more about the fights of OP than the story. That's why for most of them, Marineord is their favourite arc. But One Piece as story has so much möre depth which was shown from Enies Lobby onwards and was proven again in FM island. None of the Fishmen pirates were supposed to be serious threats for the SH's as they mainly served as an "idea" what inherted hatred can do to a person. The parallels to our world with Otohime and Fisher Tiger representing Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, the racism towards Fishmen and hatred towards Humans with flashback of the Sun Pirates and the way HOW finally Jinbei (even if only inoficially) joinined the SH's had so much symbolic weight which people missed who are only watching One Piece for the epic fights and moments alone. Apart from that it was a set up Arc which introduced us to some important things which will play a huge role later on: the introduction of JoyBoy and his promise, Shirahoshi being a weapon, Jinbei joining the SH's later on, the introduction of Koala, the fight between Akainu and Kizaru, Blackbeard becoming a Yonkou, Luffy accepting FM island as his territory, the Story of Miosgard and Otohime, Shirley's prophecy that Luffy will destroy FM island, etc., etc. All or atleast MOST of these things are still important for the end of the story and were all teased or had ties to THIS Arc. Not many arcs can compare to THAT amount of story input if you ask me...FM is not my favourite arc aswell, those are Alabasta and Enies Lobby but I can't understand how people can flat out HATE on this arc just because it had like 50 chapters/episodes or the opponents weren't 'strong enough' . I mean, yeah that's but atleast you get TONS of story and even IF you care more about fights, there was still Haki (Armanent Haki, Luffy knocking out 500 or so Fishmen with Conquerors) and new techniques (Air Walk, Red Hawk, Monster Point, Double Clutc, etc. etc.). People who hate on this arc should honestly atleast TRY to understand the themes and main topics of this arc instead of just focusing on hype fights. The way how the narrator speaks and WHAT he says when Jinbei donates Luffy his blood ("We bleed the same") is such a powerful statement which can be easily transferred to our world. I'm just wrigting this as there are so many people either hating on this arc or try to convince others to skip it which is totally wrong for such a great story You don't need to love this arc but because of the things I already mentioned (symbolism, message, themes, set up) and many more Fishmen Island is one of THE most important Arcs in the story of One Piece and should be appreciated as such.

It's crazy re watching this arc the number of big events that in world time is so close to this arc such as The Big Mom tea party is only 4 days away with Pudding actually making her debut

Damn man! No mention of the new dock system vehicles, commander Chopper or Shogun Franky?! Those were this arcs highlights for me!

Honestly I really enjoyed how the new fishman pirates were blind zealots, it made me think about how divided the humans and fishmen are and how much tension that would create along with how fisher tiger and Arlong were portrayed to the common fishman. Also Shirahoshi is cute

We waved goodbye the old word, and move into a completely new tunaverse where we sea the strawhats get reeled into a new ground breaking event against the eely lame chum-p hody jones and his school of wannabe pirates who all had the brill-iant idea to try and take over fishman island. Who cod have seen that coming? Which lead to a large scale battle, but in the end they just sort of floundered about in their own shellfish ambitions. But if we got any-fin out of this arc it was a lot of information about the sea dwellers, which if nothing else left me reef-reshed.

I like fishman island because I really like how they put what we think of the straw hats and turn it on it's head. It really let's us see teh straw hats as unpredictable pirates because this arc shows to us that they aren't heroes. I like how it shows us that different side if the straw hats

Wait, 4 days passed until the beginning of whole cake? man no wonder the Tamate bako was a recurring theme, when it was reintroduced I had long forgotten about it

The tea party was actually 2 weeks. They changed the date at the end, since they didn't get the sweets

what exactly happened to him after luffy and kidd escaped from the mines? part of me feels like it might be leading to him telling oorochi about poseidon since i dont see much a reason for him knowing about poseidon outside of setup.

yea that is surprising to think that from Fishman island to Wholecake Island was a mere 4 days i never noticed how many moons has past by, im not kidding. We(readers and strawhats) were underwater and in a snowstorm, as for dressrosa i wasnt sure was wierd for its lengthy amount of chapters. like, was there even a sunset or a sunrise before doflamingo's defeat?

Aaand now Caribou is one of the MVPs in the raid on Onigashima

The thing i find interesting abt. Fishman island is it is somewhat parallel to the skypiea arc. 1) location of the island is 10,000 mtrs below while skypiea is 10000 mtrs above. 2) the main antagonist in both the arcs is weak to luffy from begining. 3) information abt. Poseidon.

This arc hits close to reality

100% agree with the sanji nosebleed thing, it was pretty funny the first time, but the fact that it was not only repetitively used but also used as an important plot point really annoyed me. it couldve been funny if it was less overused, but it genuinely annoyed me

A GREAT ARC TO END BEFORE THE NEW WORLD, ABSOLUTELY TEAR DROPPING. LOVE THE FORESHADOWING ALL THROUGH OUT THE STORY.

The Strawhats do not simply want to go on an underwater adventure, but they also need to travel that way in order for them to reach the New World.

It was a combination of the wound and the Elephant Gatling Gun, the force making Luffy bleed more. Zoro also got off screen medical treatment, and has AB (well, XF) blood so he can receive blood from anyone.

is this arc better in the anime? i saw a lot of lists ranking the One Piece arcs (without mentioning if it was based on the anime or manga) that put it fairly high, often in the top 10, but i found it to be quite disappointing in the manga version, i haven't watched the anime version

As far as the fishmen pirates feeling a bit lack luster I think that was the point, consider how fordable Arlong was back at the beginning, its mind boggling when you compare how tough he was to fight for luffy vs how he demolishes Hoddy Jones. I feel like the bigger issue with them is the hatred and racism that centers around them, as far as their combat against the straw hats, it was oda showing us how far the crew had come plus giving them some cool moments to shine.

It wasn't 4 days due to the rest period after dressrossa however in one piece world time all the stuff has happened really fast in about a month probably which is still crazy to think

I believe it for delayed for the fact they needed to now get Sanji for the wedding or it was different tea party

In Zou when Bege gives Sanji the invitation he specifically mentions its ANOTHER tea party, not the same. Also Sanji and the crew were in Zou for 11 days, so thats more evidence its not the same.

Caribou kidnaps the mermaids, the strawhats take the blame, this kickstarts the strawhats vs army + neptune fight, and pretty much all the things happen because of it. without caribou, the strawhats might not even get involved in the fight :p

Caribou was there to create even more tension between humans/strawhats to fishfolks. Strawhats were accused of kidnapping mermaids, when they were walking down the plaza people asked if they kidnapped mermaids.
