About 7 years ago I put a set of Fishman pickups in to a Squier Strat. It wasn't until I owned a Fender Strat did I appreciate how good these pickups are. I love them suffice to say, I play what is essentially, a partscaster guitar, as much as my Fender Strat.

Enjoyed and appreciate this video. I know you are tough on other pickups and I thought you were very fair with these guys and this pickup set and very objective. I was lucky and recently bought a used Fret-King tele guitar that has these installed from the factory and The more I play them the more impressed I am with the tones, pots, USB port etc. I would have no hesitation putting these in an American fender Tele.

Late to the party, but thanks for the video. Great quality and very informative. I’m considering these myself, but wanted to ask about output and tone. How hot would you guess the output to be or what would be a good comparison? Secondly, how are the tones? When I have watched the other demos available the white guard sounds a little thin. Just trying to stick my toe in the water before I take the plunge. Thanks!

Glad to hear that you liked these pickups. I’ve been rocking a set at work for a few years now and I am still impressed with the versatility that these pickups offer. My only gripe is the same one that you share... the Micro-USB port. Fortunately, the battery only needs to be charged every three months in my use-case, so I’m not terribly worried about the port failing.

@@naazrael I've always wanted to try Zex-Coils! As for the Fishman's, I don't know how close they actually get to the "traditional" Tele tone. I primarily got them because the venue I perform in super-noisy (built in the 1800's), and I can't stand 60-cycle hum coming through my in-ear monitors. The "mode" switch is also super-convenient when I need some extra beefiness in the tone.

@@BigPhi84 I have a set of their Strat pickups in a guitar, great HSH setup that also hits classic Strat N/M tones. Definitely give them a shot next time you have a build, underrated pickups. I haven't really liked much single coil sized humbuckers. Interesting, I thought demos sounded pretty legit for the Fishman, but maybe they still need that back plate for the bridge.

The only concern I'd have is what would be the expected lifespan of the battery and can it be easily sourced and replaced if/when it fails. You wouldn't want to have to either send it to Fishman for replacement or buy another control assembly because the battery failed. Either of those two options would be a major downside. Something I have often wondered about is use of the PC style connectors and why they aren't more commonly employed for instrument components vs soldering. Fishman and EMG (perhaps others) use them. Obviously they work very acceptably, why do more component makers not take advantage of them? Many people are not good at soldering. The connector would drive the costs up slightly, but there's no reason that shouldn't be added to the final price tag. I can see Fender & Gibson not seeing an advantage, but in the case of a replacement setup like that shown today, it makes a lot of sense. Soldering grounds to pots can be a major PITA, while a standardized 3 way modular connector could facilitate faster pickup changes. I know it's not that likely to be of interest to a vast majority, but it's something to consider.

All Fluence systems can be connected to a 9V battery, so you don't need to worry about the proprietary battery pack being unavailable or expensive in 10 years or whenever it fails. Wouldn't be as convenient as using the mini-USB to charge, but it's nice that you aren't stuck hoping Fishman is around and selling battery packs at a decent price a decade or two from now.

I got a single fishman strat pickup for Christmas with electronics. I really don't have a home for it. I have one active guitar but it's 8 string and not getting routed. But times are tight so I'm not looking to buy more active pickups or another project guitar. Suggestions?

When EMG first came around it seemed they did something different, but under the hood they still utilize the same materials.

Agree re micro USB connector. Looks like a questionable design choice. The fact that it's PCB-mounted adds another weak point. Charging function means that It will go through many connect-disconnect cycles. At that rate micro USB usually lasts a couple of years at best. You could add a permanently-connected, very short micro-to-full size USB connector cable for charging, which will protect the micro USB. USB on the control plate would have been a better choice.

IMO my set of these sound better than 95% of the boutigue pickups I've had in dozens of teles I've built/bought over the last 30 years. "Vintage tone snobs" as Dylan calls them should prepare themselves: the logical extent of this technology will probably be some version of user-end customizable modeling/profiling, but I suspect that folks will still shell out hundreds for outdated gear even though, like the currnt version of high end modelers/profiles,it will nearly impossible to tell the difference in any real world scenario.

USB-C is definitely a better solution for charge connector on an item as big as a guitar. Micro USB is fine for small things like mobiles, headsets and the like - with a weight less than 250 grams. Anything more than 250 grams (8-9 oz) must be a USB-C or normal (legacy) DC-charge connector. I have no count for how many repairs I have done - even on the old type charge connectors. Every one forgets the charge connector now and then - and micro USB's just don't survive more than a few of these events before they "refuse" to connect properly to charge your guitar :o(

IMO, micro usb is only suitable for disposable things. If the inside edge connector breaks or gets warped, it takes even better soldering skills to replace the port vs replacing the whole jack assembly. I've lost a couple of cellphones before their time because the micro-usb port broke.

I've had my set for 4 years. Not issues with the charging cable or jack. The battery is simply a cell phone battery [according to Fishman when I spoke with them]. There's no issue with the micro cable or connection. You only need to charge the thing once every 3-4 months - nothing like a mobile device.

Way too hard on the installing grade as well as the quality grade. The wire is a bit short, but these were easier to install than the standard humbucker and single coils I've done. My set is 4+ years old. Never had an issue with the USB. It's simply a power cord. No data is passing through. Mine needs a charge once every 3-4 months - playing it daily. The battery will fail to hold a charge before the jack fails in my opinion. There's nothing you can do that's better for a cheap Tele. It replaces just about everything in question on a cheap guitar.

I have a set and love the pickups! Until I got this guitar I said I would never use active pickups or batteries again per previous 9v experiences.
