    Nice job. One can also use the degreasing agents in a denture cleaning vibrator tray for a faster method. Remember to go quickly and clean the agents out immediately when done. Your system works great for steel bearings but as much as I love Super Lube, wouldn't use it on ceramic or hybrid bearings. Grease is great for bearings to reduce wear and some heat but sucks in the bearings that are directly responsible for supporting the spools in baitcasters. Grease actually increases the drag on the spindles/axles/shafts and reduces the casting distances. For all the other bearings on baitcasters and all spinning reels, Super Lube is great. Typically oil for bearings, grease for gears but low speed bearings can also benefit from a high quality grease.

    I should have mentioned that almost every reel I own is a spinning reel. I typically use the super lube oil (not the grease) in my spinning reel bearings (freshwater). I usually use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean all of my reel parts including the bearings but I decided to do the video without using it because I assumed most people didn't own one. Thanks for the info/suggestions on the bearings for the spools of conventional reels, I am pinning this comment to the top of the list so others will hopefully see that as well. Tight lines!

    I use paint thinner when cleaning my reels and use welder's brushes from HF cut short like you show. Blow dry with air compressor. Reassemble using Corrosion-X only on the bearings, a little Corrosion-X on the brush mixed with reel butter on all reel moving parts, reel butter only on the carbon drag washers. I fish almost exclusively salt water and use Stradic spinning reels. I have not had any issues with my system.

    Sounds like a good way of going about it👍 I personally use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean my reels. I do so many every year that it really cuts down on cleaning time. This video was just to show someone how they can clean bearings by hand. I just assumed most people don't own an ultrasonic cleaner so this method would be something more people would find useful. @@lazycarper7925 it will work but it will need to be oiled more frequently. It is a very low viscosity oil so it will work its way out of the bearing more quickly than the super lube. An oil that would be an in between regular grease and oil would be bar and chain oil used for chainsaws. Not as thick as grease not as thin a most oils but very sticky/clingy and will stay where you put it for quite a while.

    Oh cool, a fellow AT member 👍 Thanks for commenting on the video! I like the SL oil. It is a little more viscous than a lot of oils that most people like for bearings but still much thinner than packed in grease. That extra viscosity helps it stay in place a little longer IMO. I'd say it is worth a try if you haven't used it before. You may like it and it is very inexpensive!

    Those disposable brushes are available in packs of 20 for about $4 at Michael's. In the hobby section. WD40 is good for cleaning out old grease and has a more pleasant smell than mineral spirits.

  • @TheFishingHobby

    @TheFishingHobby

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the tip on the brushes! WD-40 does a good job too but does leave a residue where the pure solvents don't. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, just mentioning it. WD-40 does a good job because it is made up of 50% Mineral Spirits but you are right, it certainly smells better! Naptha (which is basically the same thing as Zippo lighter fluid) doesn't smell as bad to me as Mineral Spirits and it is a more powerful solvent so it works much quicker with no residue left behind. I have used WD-40 myself to clean bearings before 👍 Also, the knockoff spray lube Walmart sells works just as well as WD-40 IMO for just over 1/2 the price. In fact, I'd bet WD-40 repackages their product for Wally World's house brand. It is quite a bit cheaper and smells and acts identical. Technically you can just remove the shield from the bearings and use ronsonol lighter fluid… It’s basically just naphtha. When it dries it leaves a thin layer of mineral oil on the bearings. But if you’re going to abuse your reel by leaving it outside and letting it get rained in you might be better off going with something like TSI 321 or yellow rocket fuel… But I wouldn’t ever put grease in the bearings. They are simple to take apart if they do need a little lubrication.

    I clean them with a paper towel then I add about 2 or 3 drops of oil then I pack grease tight in them after about 10 minutes of reeling and casting it loosens up and feels perfect. BTW these bearing don't coat much sometimes just buy a new bearing and put it in and toss the old 1

    How do you feel about silicone lubricant for Saltwater? Is it a good idea?

  • @TheFishingHobby

    @TheFishingHobby

    5 жыл бұрын

    I stay away from silicone grease and lube for reels personally. The reason for that is because if it ever gets on anything that needs to be repainted or glued /epoxied it can cause major problems. A lot of people who work on reels advise against silicone products for reels. That said, I'm sure someone else would say they use it with no problems. I really like the regular Super Lube multipurpose grease and oil for reels. Super Lube does make a silicone based grease and oil as well, but it says Silicone on the product name so you can avoid it if you don't want to risk using a silicone based lube. So I wouldn't recommend using silicone based products on reels personally although I will admit that I have never tried it myself. I work on my own rods and build them too so I really don't want any silicone near them (it can make the epoxy on the guide wraps not stick like it should) and that is the main reason why I don't use anything Silicone based on my fishing reels. I hope that helps, but you may want to read up on it some and decide for yourself.

    Super lube is ok but people tend to put things like automotive oil and grease, silicon products, Vaseline, etc., in their reels and it's a big problem.
