Thanks for this video. I just got an Ardent reel cleaning and maintenance kit as a gift for Christmas and used your guide to do a basic clean on a couple reels I've had for at least 15 years. Neither has ever been cleaned before so obviously they're in need of a deeper clean, but I'm not brave enough to try that just yet since this was my first time. Following your tips I can tell already from just a quick clean and oil they are working a whole lot smoother. Your video was very helpful so thanks again!

So I’ve never cleaned my fishing reels before lol. But now that I watched this and know how to do it I went to tackle warehouse to order some oil and grease. Will that Lucas reel oil and ardent reel butter work on Shimano or do I need Shimano specific oil and grease? Any help will be appreciated. I’d assume any oil and grease would work but want to be sure

IMO bamboo skewers work great for getting the gunk out worm gears without the risk of cotton fibers.

On the centrifugal brakes, why would you want oil on the brake surfaces? Doesn’t that defeat the whole point of brakes? I’m confused.

Hi, Greg! I also use 70% alcohol with my Q tip's for cleaning. Just thought I would comment. I use a lubrication pen from Menard's for $3.99. I find them at the check out counter. Hanging on the little wall as your checking out. It's a combination of oil and grease. It doesn't sling. The pen also allows me to put it where I need it with out running all over the place. I work my baitcaster reel's pretty hard during the seasons I fish. So they get dirty. But hold up really well. I use Quantum reel's only. The best bang for your buck out there. Many fisherman over look Quantum's reel's. KVD used them for year's. So I know there very good. Lew's threw alot of money for Kevin to jump ship from Quantum. So his signature product are sale at half price on E Bay and other places on Amazon. So take advantage of these products at half the cost. Also use Suffix 832 moss green 30 braid. Cast's great doesn't fade it's color. Those bass don't get off either. Thank,s for your input. Shawn.

Doing this to a brand new reel will pay dividends in the future. New reels tend to lack grease or the grease that is on there is past it's service limit.

Hi, Russell! I go one step further. When cleaning my reel's. I use a Q Tip with 70% alcohol. It cleans really well and dries with no residue left over. Gene, Is right not to push to hard with the tip. Don't want to leave fibers behind on the worm gear. Keeping the tip wet at all times prevents that. I buy a lubricant pen at Menard's for $3.99. I found them at the check out isle one day. Been using them ever since. It kind of a combination of oil and grease. It doesn't sling and stays put. It cheap and works. I use only Quantum Pulse and Accurist PT S3 reel's. Alot of fisherman over look Quantum. But KVD used them and won alot of Tournament's with them until Big Money from Lew's took him away. The Quantum reel's are Bang for your Buck reel's. Cheap but work really well also. I use Berkley Cherrywood HD Medium Heavy bait caster rod's and Ugly Stick Medium Spin rod's for my Shimano spincaster reel's. My equipment has stood up after coming off the best two years of Largemouth bass fishing I have ever had. I fish 2 to 3 times a week. No Tourament's but fish every month during the year. I caught 43 bass in 1 hr and 15 minutes on Mother's day this spring on a Quantum Pulse baitcaster and A medium heavy Berkley Cherrywood HD baitcaster rod. The bait I was using was A KVD 1.5 Sexy Shad crankbait. On Suffix 832 Moss green 30 pound braid line. It's called a "Flurry". Never heard of it till last spring. My arm's and hand's were wore out at the end. I know there were more caught. But didn't start counting till then. Took many pictures. The weight was 1 pd to 5 pd's. I sat down for 20 minutes. When The "Flurry" ended as fast as it started! I was shaking because I couldn't believe what had happened. It's a story I will tell till I die. I hope you get a chance to experience. It one day! Shawn.

That gear gets wet every time you fish. Oil washes off easier than the grease. I used to oil mine but found myself putting oil on it all the time until an old tackle shop owner schooled me on grease and oil.

@@Flukemaster Yes, I was wondering same thing as Russell. A reel service man employed by ABU Garcia once told me before I start using my new reel, wipe off the grease on the worm gear and oil it. I think he said grease is initially used because it has a longer "shelf life", but when a customer starts using that reel, remove the grease and oil the worm gear. This should possibly get you more casting distance. But, I see your point also....oil washes off easier.
