question with the heavy setup, I've been using basically identical gear and nearly got knocked over by a very large Spanish while locked drag, do you think it's possible to build up the strength and body weight to fight fish like this? I'm a 5"11, 70kg guy and I don't have much experience with heavy fishing so looking for some pointers on this one.

Hi Mate, I'm exactly the same size as you (maybe 2kg lighter at the moment). I think anyone running locked drag on a DogFight will be in a lot of trouble if a big Spanish hits at full speed! Depending on the direction they hit your lure it can be a WAY crazier first moments of a fight compared to GT. I've had it happen and barely stopped myself from being pulled in (and that was just with my 10kg hookup drag, full lock i would have been in the drink). The way to battle it is run lighter drag for your hookup, just make sure as soon as you hook up get into a good position, sit back, straight arm and when you're comfortable tighten up and set the hook. You could practice your fighting position at home by tying off to something solid and get used to leaning back/sitting down with your fighting belt, try loosening your belt a bit and have it sit a bit lower on your legs (the lower the better leverage you'll get). Getting used to that position and then being able to get straight into it as soon as you hook up will help you get stable and be able to handle high levels of drag. Once you're in that position on a fish, the harder they pull the more you should sit down, you'll feel them lifting you and you just gotta keep sitting down to counter act it. Training wise I don't do anything but I was a bodyboarder as a kid/teen and have always had (relatively) strong legs, walking to ledges for sometimes hours each day on trips prolly helps a bit and when I'm not on trips I try and do nature walks up steep zones. Other than that just normal fitness, run around with the kids a bit, go for a surf here and there. Hope this helps Mate!

may be able to add a bit here, im 6'2 and about 95kg, and I think having extra weight and muscle in your arms enables you to fight fish a little easier with your upper body, but lower body will always have the most torque. keeping your rod arms straight will lower fatigue and you can lean back and use that to help gain. line and apply pressure to the fish.good luck and be careful with those dogfights, too much drag can literally be dangerous lol

well as someone with only 178cm and 65-70kg who still fishes 130lb/60kg of drag on my conventionals and up to 30-35kg on spin, of course you're body strengh matters but technique is WAY more important, I literally pulled a guy over the ground who's one head bigger and at least 80kg, maybe 90 and even 30kg are enough to stop most guys my size, btw I can fish all this drags without a gimbal or harness, the harness just helps to be able to hold the pressure for more than a few minutes, while a gimbal protects from getting bruises, but don't use both at the same time or it will decrease the drag you can hold on to A LOT, cause the secret is getting a good lever and using you're whole body, keep the rod low and use you're legs for pressure, while keeping you're arms and back straight, just try out to keep the rod flat and you won't have any lever against you, then pull backwardsand crank while gong a bit forward, this way you can also fish enormous drag on light rods, the rod I used when fishing130lb of drag is tested to break at 20kg but if you don't put pressure on it nothing will break. Just take a buddy and let him pull, after a few times you'll be able to fish a lot more drag but be carefully, I once broke a reelholder and knocket off the first guide of my rod.

Awesome demo! Always forget how little drag is required to stop a fish. Since I’m land locked, do fly fishing, using 4lb tippet with the drag set to just stop over wind, bring in a 2kg fish in under 5 minutes just buy palming the spoil on runs and using side pressure.

Yeah .. very good demonstration ... thanks! I've come across people who had absolutely no understanding of how big a 15 or 20 lb drag is, and yet opt for reels having 40 or 50 lb, which in reality I'm not sure if there is any normal angler who can take that much drag! One point that I'd like to add is that the angle rod makes with the direction the fish pulls the line is a very significant factor in the actual drag the reel encounters. Basically, the best practice is to set the drag when the rod is in a normal fish fighting position (angle wise), which looked like you did in this position. 👌👍

Hey man, thanks for the upload as always great stuff. But just a heads up, more for your viewers than you, certain drag stacks will have a significant difference between the same settings after the drag stacks warmed up, so if people are setting a 10lb set up at 3lb cold, they may risk it going upto 5/7lb and back them off.

I have been using a pe 4 saltiga with about 8kg of drag for kings. We generally get kings that are smaller than in NZ here in Cape town. I run Pe 4 then top shot pe 10 braid leader which is at least 3/ 4 meters. I have had fish go into kelp , which I think they would have done on pe 8. I am just very aware of the lightness of my rod reel setup which is around 750 g combined. I just figure I can pull harder physically on lighter gear ( 're lightness of rod reel combined). And even tho I use pe 4 mainline it still breaking at around 67 lbs or so. I no there are days were I go to my pe 6 if there are kings around that maybe over 10 kg .But some fish are just unstoppable depending on were u fish 're ledges and kelp. Thank u '.

They have a feature were you can set drag at a pressure you want and it won't go more. You can adjust it with the preset knob. It would be cool to see someone use them. They are built seriously tough. Seeing a Penn Slammer would be cool too. Good vid!

They are brilliant for dead baiting. Extremely robust and probably bulletproof. But its not a reel anyone would want to use for popping, its heavy and you have to put in quite a bit of effort to turn the handle. When spinning the whole day, even a 100gram difference feels like alot on a rod and reel combo.... Thats why they are not really that popular among guys that spin all day.

I had a customer come in looking for steelhead and salmon gear. He was like "I need at least 25lbs of drag for my reel." I don't think he really understood how much drag is usually needed. That much drag would probably break a rod used for that purpose

Hello there, I have save up for months and plant to make my investment on buying Daiwa Saltiga 2020 14000 one, but I heard so many people do not like the Magseal. This is my second most expensive reel ever. My first expensive reel was Van Staal VR150, I was very disappointing because this thing didn't last me for 1 year. I want to go for Saltiga because I love the saltist and the bg. But I'm just afraid it isn't strong enough to last at least to 3 years. With $1000, I think I can get a kayak lol. I also own penn slammer 3, this thing is a working horse but it is kind of heavy and not as smooth compare to Daiwa. I don't like Shimano because after owning 3 of them (stradic and saragosa), they seem to have too much problem with the line roller bearing. Can you tell from your experience about using Saltiga with mag seal? Thank mate!

Hi Mate, I have owned a SaltigaZ 4k and a 15 Saltiga DogFight 8k and a 15 Saltiga 5k for years. The dogfight and the 5k saltiga have mag seal and the old SaltigaZ no mag seal. Honestly I haven’t noticed anything negative with magseal, all three reels I get serviced about once a year and all I do to maintain them is rinse with fresh water after each time fishing. Compared to mates who have owned Stellas I reckon the Saltigas fair as well or slightly better in terms of service frequency. I don’t dunk my reels though, they just cop a bit of spray from waves. If you need a reel that can get dunked all the time you prolly have to look at something like the Van Staal (but sounds like you already tried it and didn’t like it!). I love Saltigas for how nice they are to spin with, thats the main thing for me (a reel that I want to spin with even if I’m not catching fish!)

Hey Briggsy Cool video man love it. I’ve got a video on my channel where I hooked a tuna on a exp 5500 pe5 and the thing wouldn’t stop. I honestly thought I applied just under 10kg of drag. If you ever have a chance I would love to get your opinion on what went wrong or if I should’ve loosened more drag. Jbraid pe5 120lb leader.

Hi Mate, not sure where you were but it looked to me like you either were on a big mackerel, big wahoo or your tuna got sharked! I’ve had 20kg longtails gone in a clean bite from sharks, and also had big mackerel take powerful first runs, turn and when they turn the leader goes across their teeth and boom, clean snip! I used to fish 40lb leader for longtails (now 80lb) and landed a fair few fish on the 40lb so I honestly think you must have been sharked or had a big mack/wahoo 🤙

If you ever see/realise there’s a shark on your fish loosen right off and let them swim freely, they can usually out run the shark if early enough in the fight. Then tighten up once they’re away from it and try to smoke them in as fast as you can past the sharks 👍

What's the reason for a hookup and fight drag can't you just set your drag as fight drag the whole time so you don't have to change?

  • @jeffffro7674

Excellent question!!!! It makes sense to me, in my own opinion and experience, I think having the drag set lighter for the hook up has advantages. Especially for the fish! Those hooks are sharp as all get out!(at least it should be) If your set is gonna be successful, its gonna be successful at just about any setting. With a light drag though, theres a better chance of not injuring the fish and not straight up pulling hard enough to yank through and out! It's all random bits of chaos at this crucial point, you have NO clue where the hook is in relation to the fish, it may be in a super thin or even life threatening area when you try to set the hook, in both cases having some 'give' in your line may mean the difference between catching and wishing! IDK, Briggsy may have totally different thoughts on the matter, either way, again, exactly how we need to be thinking! Question EVERYTHING!!!!! Its how we learn! Stay fishy!

Hi Mate, on the heavy setup any more than 10kg and I'd go flying (even 10kg if you're targeting GT and a big Spanish Mackerel hits you pretty much get pulled off your feet). You can also have line 'explode' if you're running super heavy drag and a fish hits at full speed, so better to let that initial shock happen under a lighter drag, then tighten up if needed. With the lighter setups it's a different style of fishing and you usually want to allow the fish to run, the "fighting drag" I should have made it more clear is reserved for if you're in a bit of trouble and need to tighten up a bit. Most the time I just run the hookup drag and only if a fish needs it I'll tighten up to somewhere in the realm of the "fighting drag". On a Tuna off the rocks for example, depending on the zone I'm usually all over the drag, tightening/loosening to control where the fish goes. So this is really just to give a rough idea of what drag settings I use and definitely not set in stone!

If it’s a smaller reel over time it will prolly have issues, but something like the 2020 Saltiga in 18k + size it’s pretty much made for it. Just make sure you loosen off your drag after every session when you store the reel 🤙

Eu costumo calibrar para 10kg com linha 0,40 grilon. O peixe "pesa" o dobro dentro d'água, devido a força e deslocamento.
