    I've watched several videos on knots and this is by far the best. Very good play by play, you made it simple with thick rope to show how its done and every step is caught perfectly on camera! Greatjob Flukemaster!

    I can't even begin to tell you what a rare wonder of instruction you provide. This comes from an exceptionally intelligent 63 year old with what might be termed an extreme lifelong case of ADD. Some things, particularly the basics (along with certain assumed and usually omitted steps of knowledge) I have to ingest and digest like a chimp being shown how to peel a banana. What you spoke about in the (2nd?) beginners' video about instructors not realizing how their second nature knowledge is a hindrance in learning/teaching is a profound fundamental that most of the world ignores or is too dense to perceive. By the way, intended or not, you are entertaining. Thank you.

    You nailed it, Gene..... a lot of folks gripe about the Palomar with fluorocarbon, but the problem is they're not cinching with the tag end instead of the main line, and they don't wet the knot. I use the Palomar for everything and I've never had it fail.... even with braid.

    Very helpful, I've used a basic clinch knot since I was a child but never seen the improved clinch, which I will definitely use from now on. I've also used something similar to the Palomar knot, but instead of passing the lure/ hook through the loop, I pass the tag end through the loop, wet the line, and cinch it down. My line of choice is Berkley IronSilk, which is a reinforced polymer monofilament.

    The only thing I use a palomar for is a dropshot. But it's a great beginner knot. To this day it still amazes me how many people just don't know how to tie a good knot. Fishing or other wise.

    Wet the knot good before you tighten it down. Make sure you are tying it correctly. It's the knot I tie 99% of the time and the only time I have breakage issues is if I don't retie at the beginning of the day.

    I've never used the Mahin but I just watched a couple of videos on how to tie it and there are a couple of things that I don't like about it. The knot that you tie to the fluoro at the beginning and the safety knot you tie to the braid at the end. Those two knots along with the small tags that you have to leave would cause a lot of friction while going through the guides on your rod. This would shorten your cast significantly and cause knot failure.

    So it seems that if you tie that same knot, with a half hitch instead of hte improved clinch knot, the inlline half hitch will cinch down and the second halfhitch will tension up against the first and thats all needed. This variation of the knot is used alot in Bushcraft, (its basically canadian Jam knot backwards, and similar [but way easier] to the bowline.) Ive never considered it for fishing though, I think I will test it. Defintely would save time if its a viable knot, and still just as strong but simpler. (I know its an old video, but its still a good one.

All the knots I've seen, talk about using braid to a leader, I don't plan on doing this for frogging....but I can't find anything about joining the braid and mono AT THE SPOOL. What do you recommend? Gene, do you ever use a "loop knot"? I've been practicing the knots you've demonstrated and this season plan to get away from using a swivel snap. Another video I watched for ocean kayak fishing shows a loop knot as the preferred type for lures. It supposedly gives the lure a better presentation. Your thoughts? Thanks.

    So I ended up doing an accidental knot that I swore I saw on a video but can't remember what KZreadr or video: I started how you would start a palomar, by threading the line twice to make a loop. But then instead of doing the rest of the palomar, I instead did an improved clinch. So I took the tag end, wrapped it 5-6 times (which is harder with the two lines creating the loop on the other side of the eyehole), then put it through the original loop, and then proceeded to put it through the other loop I just created. It seems to work, but the line is so small I can't see how the knot looks. I have no idea whether it's legit or some other knot.

    Is the rapala knot an ideal knot with fluorocarbon line or a co - polymer line? I ask this because the improve clinch knot is ideal for those lines.

  • @happykal11
    @happykal1110 жыл бұрын

    just curious what kind of knot do you use to attach fluorocarbon to your lure? I only use 6lbs and 8lbs fluoro on my spinning reels. I gave up on using fluoro last year. too many times breaking off using palamor knot. no matter how much spit i used or slowly i cinched the knot i'd break off at the lure with in a few casts. I saw Shaw Grigsby tie a knot, the double San Diego knot, and damn it works good. I've only had one break off with fluoro since. Tried to pitch between two submerged bushes and was to far to the right. Shook the hell out of the branches before the line broke. Figured I'd try palamor again. Hooked a fish, had it close enough to see it was a big walleye and it broke off. >_< The swear jar would have put my kid through college.

    Very informative. I've been wondering about the improved clinch knot and now I know. I just recently started using braided line, before I was using Trilene XT monofilament. What is a good knot to connect those two lines? Also, I like your videos alot, unfortunately I only get to do bank fishing for now. Hoping to get to go out in a boat soon. I only have 3 rods, a 7' medium action(what it says on rod) Shakespeare, a 6' medium action Matzuo and a 6'6" medium power fast tapered action Lew's Carbon Speed Stick. All 3 are spinning rods. The 6' and 7' rods have 5.1:1 reels and my 6'6" has a 6.2:1 reel. What are the best tips you could give me for bank fishing these rods and the techniques and/or rigs to use? Thank you for all the helpful videos I've seen so far. Got alot more to watch.
