    Good episode. Thank you for bringing it to our living rooms. I know it's time consuming and the efforts it takes to setup the cameras, take the different shots and then post editing, which is huge but hidden to the audience. I hope these don't ruin your real passion that is fishing and being in nature, and then one day give up on the channel altogether. So thanks again for the efforts.

Almost went back to the ramp and went home cause I was not feeling it. Had planned on a trip further a field but decided to stay on the three instead , paid off in the end

    I’m with you in the new rules..I think the mentality behind the new rule is because when people were catching undersized ones they weren’t being released properly and dying anyway (even a percentage of the ones released properly might not make it).. so the idea behind it is as soon as you catch your limit, any size, you’re encouraged to stop targeting them…not saying I agree is going to work but that sounds like the mentality behind it

  • @Saltfix

    @Saltfix

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep I get the idea , but unfortunately I have no faith in people to do the righty as soon as a bigger one gets caught the small one will get upgraded. Plus now the inshore tinny guys who might have got a small one and put it back will be able to keep the small ones Feels like we are killing big breeders and the little future generations too now

    Great start to the season Scott, and totally agree with your approach to sizes and numbers. What about something like “electronic tags” to stop upgrading. It is not perfect but for example - you’re required to send a photo of your fish into fisheries within say an hour of catching with some distinguishable mark/tag in the fish. If fisheries check when you come in and the fish isn’t there, pretty clear you’ve upgraded. Would be hard to police the timing of sending in the electronic tag, but is a starting point.

    Good sesh! 100% agree mate! 6 month ban but we can take twice the dhufish. Stupid! The snapper will be one of the few winners by 2030. Boat limit of 4 and a 6 month ban will have them hardly fished. Unfortunately I feel the dhufish will be decimated

    The logic makes sense: stop chucking back dead fish to catch another one. Responsible fisho's should treat it like the old rules, 50cm and 1 fish, unless you barotrauma a small one to death, then you gotta keep it. If it's healthy, put it back! We need guys with a big following, like yourself, promoting it. It's a culture change that has to be driven by calling out people who are doing the wrong thing. Keep it up Scotty.

Don’t like the fill the freezer mentality but it seems the majority are all about it. Can’t look at all the boats going out daily and all the bag out photos on line and think Rec s don’t play their part in this

    What are the new rules that would allow people to keep a dhu that small? Someone please explain

  • @Saltfix

    @Saltfix

    Жыл бұрын

    Dhu fish don’t release well from deeper water where they are mostly found , small fish that couldn’t be kept would generally float off so fisheries said i they can now be kept, alright in theory but relays on people to accept that’s their fish and not upgrade when a bigger one pops up. My problem is we can now take the big breeding fish plus keep the next generation of breeding fish, it’s don’t seem sustainable in my eyes, plus we now have a six month closed season but they have upped the bag from one to two dhu fish again hard to see the logic. I fish shallow where most fish release well so I will putting back the baby’s

    Cheers mate. I’m from BC, Canada and pretty much all I do is troll for salmon. We do jig up rock cod and Ling cod but there’s no fight in them. Usually in 20 - 100m of water. I’ll be in New Zealand in a couple weeks and reckon there’s a snapper or two with my name on them. A friend has a boat so I’ll be pestering him to take me out. I’d been wondering how far out we’d have to go. I don’t think he’s got a fish finder. Anyway, good to know you have to be too deep. Thank you.

    @@Saltfix Thank you. I forgot to mention when we troll for salmon we’re always working structure. Reefs, under sea mounts and ledges and around islands. Currents tend to dictate which side of a point might be holding fish. I gather using a burley pot is much like chumming. About the only thing we use that for is halibut. We fill 100mm pvc pipes with holes cut into them with salmon belly, heads and frames. We lower that to the bottom on the downrigger so it will leave a scent trail for the halibut to follow. The trouble is it also attracts mud sharks and rays.

  • @Saltfix

    Yep up grading has always been rife. If it comes to the surface in a cloud of bubbles from 40m it’s dead. The release weight will drop it to the bottom and makevyou feel better but will probs float up later where you can’t see. It’s why I don’t go off shore, in 15-20 m as long as you don’t skull drag most dhu will still be active and swim off fine

    The size limit change is because recs release to many and dhueys dont release well, most of the time they die well before they get to the bottom, the little fella you released is now dead. Thats why they want you to keep him, so he dies for a reason and wasnt a waste, you effectively killed that fish for no reason

  • @Saltfix

    @Saltfix

    Жыл бұрын

    I understand why the introduced the no size limit. Dhu fish do not release well from deeper water, and if it’s eyes are hanging out swim bladder blown or floats up in a cloud of bubbles I agree it’s dead. When they come up still kicking in shallow water like this one I’ll be putting it back. It’s chance of survival is way better in the water than on a bbq. I personally have been involved in a fish tagging program and see recapture data regularly that is solid evidence fish treated correctly from shallow water (and some deep) do in fact survive and even can be recaptured several times .
