    Revenge of the temu reel 😂 Just goes to show you don't need hugly expensive gear to land decent fish. With that drag on the temu i suspect the felt washes are bone dry. I have a reel that had a drag like this i swapped in carbon fiber drag washes and its as smooth as butter. You add innox mx6 ptfe just so its super thin on the surface (wet look no clumps). I have another with the sticky drag but i don't have the cf washes in its size. I am tould adding some lubricant will help. I will use the innox mx6 ptfe i am tould is good for felt as well.

    The reel is ok. I was surprised the drag didn’t seize up. I’m not going to alter it because I want to see how long it last and what it can take before it fails

    @@Saltfix fair enough for $13 its getting its money worth. These little upgrades are are quality of life improvements,but do help keep consistant pressure. You can turn some really cheap reels into a very high quality premium feel for little extra. There are good and bad ones though. I had one with a plastic spool, it had a tinny burr in the spool and caused the worst slip stick drag. It came with a aluminium spool soon as i changed to that it was amazing. The corrosion resistance isn't very good though a wipe with wd40 on key areas like the shaft and the plate under the drag knob does wonders 👍.

    Cracking conditions.! Was that Friday 14/6. Might have to revisit the pellets , tuna oil option to stretch out my other burley. I have a bit of minced fish /cray heads burley that I stack into yogurt containers. 2 or 3 of those will last a full session

    Can’t let him get too cocky, gotta put him in his place . The Temu held up well . Surprised me that the drag held up to those runs and didn’t seize up . Actual reel feels solid . It’s the corrosion resistance that I feel will let it down

    Good to see you busting out the side scan. You'll see "fish" in the mid water dark and then similar size shadow, same distance into the return section. Hard to explain without pictures, I'll try to get you some footage tomorrow 😉 I'd say those missed hookups are because 8/0 is too big for that size fish. You'll have no issue hooking the big ones (or old bucket mouth Dhuie), but will miss the smaller snapper and skippy. I usually run 5/0 circles and stick the hook vertical through the scalies jaw, bottom to top to get hook exposure. What a magic arvo though! Nice vid.

  • @Saltfix
    @Saltfix8 күн бұрын

    The hook through the jaw thing just doesn’t sit well with me seems too easy for a fish to grab the bait and just pull it off the hook . I’ll play with side scan a bit more until I get a better read on it

  • @tin-yetti2785
    @tin-yetti27858 күн бұрын

    I see your point, but figure the fish usually swallow the lot. Plus I generally fish snells so maybe they get the bottom hook. 🤷‍♂️

  • @MrRjblair
    @MrRjblair9 күн бұрын

    Hey mate those shadows on the side scan are from the boat rocking from side to side. The sounder returns are getting stronger and weaker as the boat rocks back and forth

    When ya cut up cubes for burley, cut them up thinner, you get way more in the water that way and essentially more burley. That way if a fish starts chomping down, you will still have burley getting past them instead of just a few cubes getting picked off. You also need to go back to big red hooks mate! I literally never have a failed hook up.

  • @Saltfix
    @Saltfix10 күн бұрын

    I also have a burley log in the pot. There is no shortage 😂 Yeah I’m not sold on circles but like to experiment, not out there to “bag out” every time . Happy if I just get an eater

    I have a box of kmart jarvis walker red J hooks, seem to work and land just as many fish as the big name expensive brands. Although they do look like they could potentially bend on a trophy fish. I've pulled many 60-70cm snaps in on them and really haven't noticed a difference in hook quality, I think we are the ones who often get "hooked" with expensive fishing gear 😅

  • @Saltfix
    @Saltfix11 күн бұрын

    Yes I’ve used the cheaper stuff before but like you say not as strong . The big red rip offs that BCF sell have been fine used em for years , I’m just experimenting with different hook styles to see if there is a difference

  • @btw2567

    Why have you messed about with hooks Scott? Did you have an issue with the Mustad Big Reds?

  • @Saltfix
    @Saltfix11 күн бұрын

    I still use big reds , just been experimenting a bit to see if I can improve my hook up rate but I think snapper just have really bony mouths and sometimes hooks just miss. If I ran snells I’d hook more but I like to release big ones and small ones without half their face missing
