Brant, I fished on quite a few military bases/installations with my Dad when I was a military dependent and later as a military officer (now retired) and everyone of them had some sort of warning sign that warned civilian boaters not to approach the installation's shores or structures within a certain distance (sometimes 200ft and sometimes included some sort of threat of prosecution). Additionally if you check on most navigational charts, there are map symbols that indicate the military off limits areas or stand off distance that vessels or aircraft have to maintain around some military installations.

It seems like it depends on who you talk to when it comes to a military facility. Most of those guys don’t mind as long as you are respectful. But with no signs or boundaries… how are you supposed to know ?! That was probably the biggest red I’ve seen ! Great video

If the base has a 200ft rule, it would be too easy to post signage along the shore stating that. I briefly checked their Morale/Recreation website and didn't see anything. There were no marker bouys for marking the 200ft line. If it's a security thing, it should also show up as a security icon on Navionics. I suppose in the end, it's better safe than sorry.. or ticketed.

The fishing distances from military installations mostly became a big thing after 911. I live in Norfolk and we used to troll for stripers in popular spot next to the navy ships. Can't do that anymore. We have to keep 500 ft away now.

When you put in at Navy Point on the other side of NAS Pensacola in Bayou Grande, the restricted areas show up on my nav chart. Never thought to look at my chart on the bay side. Though, from working on NAS previously I knew boats were not to come near. We were told to tell them they have to move out or to call base security if they don't. BTW, I have 2 flounder honey holes on NAS to hit fishing from shore.

It's up to the captain of the boat to understand the rules for restricted waters. Posting or marking boundaries on the waterway are not required for established military. The restricted waterway would be on your chart with other information as it pertains to time you can be there, distance from shore, etc. The most up-to-date information is through the Coast guard Channel 16. Whenever you're going to be near a military installation or a target site. You should reference your chart and contact the coast guard for the most relevant up to date information.

Of course, another way of being informed is someone from the installation yelling at you and educating you in the absence of signage/markings/navigational aids. In which case, it's generally enforceable after being verbally informed and failing to leave.

But civilians can go fishing on let’s say parris island sc all they have to do is provide proof of car insurance and a drivers license lol. You can fish in all the tidal creeks on a boat as long as they aren’t shut down for live fire on the ranges. Which they have boats out to cut anyone off from going into the impact area. You can go onto marine corps base Kaneohe bay and serf or fish so eat a big old dick.

Was there any signs out telling you not to fish inside the lines? They cant just tell you not to fish if it’s not posted in a very visible way. I understand it’s our military but they can’t just overstep their bounds like that that’s like telling you you can’t hunt of fish your own property because they decided to run ruffshot over it. They have to have it posted with clear visible lines. It still don’t matter whether you’re right there or all the way out where you can barely see the base there’s optics good enough to see everything you wanna see from that far away.

I was confused and talked to the people on the boats and on the ground telling people to move. They only told me that they were ordered to tell boats. nobody ever harassed me, so I kept fishing. I only ever caught Sheepshead and pinfish, but there were a bunch of redfish and black drum there as well.

Retired military here. There are Karens in the armed forces just as much as in your local HOA. I would politely challenge the guy. Get his name, rank AND billet. Ask him to site his source. If he says something like, "Because I fucking say so." Call the local wildlife authorities. It may just be a pencil pusher attached to tenant command who is trying to protect "his" fish. As a matter of common-sense seamanship, consult current government printed charts (not civilian fun charts) and see if the area is posted with an identification. That should give you a research start point to make sure the posting is still current, who authorized it, its parameters etc. etc. A range finder may be a handy argument settlement tool.

I was a civilian government employee and we had free range to fish on any and all military property. If they are on military property then they are active or civilian. Unless they are doing active drills or procedures then the water is open to the public. Especially if there are no markers in the water.

Yeah, it's still on the charts. It's not uncommon for the average service member to be unaware of the exact nuances of the legal restrictions. Whoever the boat operator previously encountered either didn't know how to enforce the restriction, or wasn't actually tasked with enforcing it beyond communicating that a restriction is in place. Which is why sometimes it's wise to just leave before someone is called who does actually know how to enforce it.

Nonsense. No signage while on the water is implicit consent in all tidally influenced water. Think otherwise? Post the federal statute that states a non proclaimed (posted) tidal area of a military base that the buffer zone is 200 feet. I will wait as no such law exists. IF they want people to stay away 200 feet it must have signage of a font size readable by a normally sighted person at 200+ feet. It also must be marked on charts or have a buoy line, something to designate the off limits zone. If it was a naval vessel that is completely different.

Actually if it was Pensacola Naval Air Station you were off of then the restricted distance was 500 feet and that is contained in CFR 33 CFR § 334.778.

They come up with guns here. They are being nice they have bouys around the base if you pass the buoys they have speed skiffs with mounted guns so make you leave. They store ammo here so. And have a underwater submarine docking.

I used to flounder around the base all the time. Then they started running me off. Now I heard the markers are gone I was thinking about trying it again. Wish I knew the answer

They guide is right. If there are no signs or buoy's marking the boundary, you can fish anywhere.

Not true on government bases. The boat captain is responsible for knowing. It will be on the charts he uses.

It seems the military doesn’t even know the rules themselves. If there are no signs or buoy markers keep fishing, they can F off. Make them prove why you can’t fish there.

Use to boat that area while living a short time in Fairhope, Alabama. The intercostal toward Pensacola is beautiful. Sandy beaches everywhere and the blue angels (name ??) would be practicing over us while having a shore lunch. The fly boys like to drop down and check out the ladies. Your tax dollars at work.

Yep shoreline fishing is pretty relatable. I just wish the snow and ice would melt so it would look more like Florida here and i could relate to being barefoot on the boat . Florida looks real nice.

People on here saying the restricted areas are on Nav charts. USCG rules are different that land rules. e.g. USCG can pretty much do anything for any reason so beware.

Correct. The nautical chart for NAS Pensacola shows multiple restrictions (500 feet is the actual distance they are supposed to stay away). Signs would be nice, but uniformed service members yelling from shore and/or their own vessel work just as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the USCG, Navy, or someone else was trying to hail them on the radio too.
