Fisher’s Hornpipe - clawhammer banjo

Музыка

Migrating over here for this week’s Instagram banjo tune of the week. As I said over there, this is one of my favorites for just completely zenning out and playing over and over and over again when I need to chill. ☺️
Speaking of banjo tune of the week, can you guys do me a huuuuge favor? 🙏🏻 Please please please. So, I got a job working for a new, wonderful business I’m helping to get off the ground (and also to teach banjo at it; stay tuned for more on that): the Maine Traditional Music School!! Everything is online right now, so anyone anywhere can take classes or attend performances.
Now, in order for this to become a lasting hub for the preservation and celebration of trad music styles, we need people to KNOW ABOUT IT! 😁 Even if you don’t intend to take classes, would you mind quickly going and following our Instagram or Facebook page? The more followers those pages have, the more people will see the business, and the more classes people will take-which not only keeps us in business, but keeps our favorite music traditions alive. (And, you know, helps your favorite banjo player hang on to her dream of playing, teaching, and sharing music professionally. 😉) Thank you all... you guys have always been the best!

I love this, and I'm so glad you're uploading again. Every video makes my week! I picked up the banjo a few months ago, and you have been a huge inspiration and motivation to keep learning. Just want to say a huge thank you and hello from a fan in California! Also, #dropthumbsnotbombs might be the best thing ever.

Aww, thanks Adam! Hey, question for you: I'm thinking about teaching an online class (maybe a class series or maybe one-time, not sure) and am trying to put feelers out for what people might be interested in. If you ever took a class, what kinds of things would you like to learn? I was thinking either focusing on technique (hammer ons, pull offs, slides, drop thumb etc) or just teaching a few specific tunes. Thanks!

@@mesarah011 I would be super interested! Maybe something focusing on a specific technique with a single tune and related exercise that kind of work together. I had a fiddle teacher who used that method, and it worked well for me. For example, there’s a tune I really love and want to learn called “Elkins” that relies pretty heavily on dropthumb. I’ve tried and struggled to learn it on my own, and I think I’d get a lot out of someone breaking it down with some related exercises to help get it in my fingers.

I’d also be interested to learn how you approach and learn new tunes, where to look to find new tunes or get inspiration and where and how to find and compile lyrics for tunes with tons of versions

Such a cool tune! I see why it's a good one to zen out to. To me, it sounds like running on the trail by the river. Also, two questions for you: 1. What tuning is this in? (And would you consider putting the tuning for each video in the description?) 2. What kind of strings do you use on your fretless banjo? Thanks! David from Virginia

Oh yes!! Thanks, David... this is a good reminder about the tunings. I always forget and I also appreciate it when people post them!! It's in good ol' Double C tuning: gCgcd. ^_^ I learned this arrangement from the tab of Brad Leftwich in his Round Peak banjo book. As for strings: Aquila nylgut. I just ordered some of the Aquila red series, though, so stay tuned to hear what those sound like! I've never used them before, so I'm excited.
