Wow this subtext totally passed me by. I really just took it as insisting on the backseat out of selflessness, and the fish story being questioned just because it’s dumb.

I always assumed that the reason frank is so adamant about sitting in the back is because he's concerned for his safety, and he knows that Sally killed 3 fingers by strangling him from the backseat of a car.

The whole point of this scene that seems to be a pointless conversation piece actually shows the mafia way of life, if you’re caught or suspected to be lying even about the littlest thing and not being able to explain yourself then it literally could end up with a ‘sit down’. Joe Pistone (Donnie Brasco) explained this in an interview which I found fascinating.

Exactly. Thing is Sally is no fool. He already figured out before he got in the car something bad happened there. He didn't know the details and didn't need to know, but he did need to know what the alibi would be if the cops or a boss were to corner everybody about it later, and he wanted to make sure everyone was straight about it so he could explain it.

The way he gets stern "I'll sit there" shows the acting skills of De Niro and the boss level of his character.

Great timing with the dialogue, this scene was well done.

The beauty of Frank's desire to sit in the backseat is its ambiguity: there are any number of motivations to read into that. As far as Sally bugging Chuckie about the fish, the key to understanding this scene in my opinion is that Sally knows they're driving to a hit, whereas Chuckie doesn't. Sally wants to know why the stain got in the back seat in case he has to explain this to the cops after Hoffa goes missing. He prods Chuckie for an answer in order to give the same story to the cops if he comes up for investigation. But since Chuckie doesn't know that's what is going down, he interprets the question as straightforward.

This might be a stretch, but I felt like Chuckie's ignorance to the type of fish he was carrying was sort of a metaphor for the current situation. He picked the fish up because his friend told him to, he didn't ask any questions about what is was. It's similar to Chuckie picking up the mobster Sally Bugs. He didn't ask questions, he just picked him up, not realizing he's an assassin. I think it's a funny moment that's meant to shed light on the fact that Chuckie is a bit dull witted and "stupidly" involved as Sheeran puts it later.

I think it is metaphorical tho, apart from actually happening of course. I heard somewhere that when Hoffa start talking about the fish you “have to pack it up right, otherwise you’ll never get the smell out” I think the “smell” Hoffa is obliviously describing is his future death. And how that stink never left Franks life, it stayed there forever. That’s why Frank leaves his door open at the end of the movie. As a reminder that the stench, that was Hoffas death, never left him.

Love the shot at 0:45. Scorsese using the classic leading lines technique with the street markers and the power lines.

I loved it even though I have only watched it once. It's one of my favorite movies.

This scene is actually based on Chuck's (played by Jesse Plemons) real-life alibi to the FBI. Investigators questioned why Chuck had taken the car to the car wash on the day of the murder, but Chuck explained that it was due to fish fluid from a 40-pound salmon leaking onto his back seat.

So many great ones: This entire scene Is this how you dress for a meetin' The whole Joey Gallo hit and lead up to it The grape juice scene in prison The entire scene during Frank's award ceremony(All the mobsters giving Jimmy "the look") When Jimmy is chewing out his guys in the office and Frank walks out. The scene between Russell and Frank in the coffee shop. "No matter what...he's goin."

@@benhandel-kutz8957 Well not really he's asking a perfectly normal question, and the driver can't give him a straight answer. Which is why it's funny and a great scene. He does get to the bottom of it in the end by saying his friend had ordered it before hand. So that's why he never knew what kind of fish it was lol.

I love how Frank didn't want to sit in the front because he was afraid of getting whacked. Guy didn't play games...

Golly, gee. Great dialogue! Wow. I just can't get over it. Yessiree, Bob.

The fish never had the makings of a varsity fish...

This scene's great, but I also like the second half when Hoffa comes in ("Never leave the fish in. You won't get the smell out") and when he asks Sally Bugs if he can see out his glasses!

I love how agitated Sally seems to get when Chuckie doesn't know what kind of fish he had in the backseat.

That intersection shot as the red Caprice makes a turn.. Just felt like a relic from the past I feel a weird attachment to that old town now.

Kills me every time. Just keep coming back to this conversation

There's so many brilliant scenes in this film, I can watch over and over again

The actor playing Sally would have been great as a young Richie Aprile. He has the intimidating, semi-comprehending, semi-murderous stare down.

Scenes like this is what make this movie great just extra detail

This was comic relief it was breaking the tension down a bit

It was simultaneously providing levity and building tension.(The longer it went on) Brilliant scene!!

I feel like if Tarantino made this movie, Frank would've strangled Bugs and helped Hoffa disappear. But sadly, unlike Tarantino, Scorsese deals in reality.

Difference is, Tarantino is scripted and Scorsese lets the actors roam free. Yet somehow, both seem natural.

Except this wasn’t reality either as frank sheeran DID NOT kill HOFFA.... the only people who know are the ones who have taken it to their grave or still carrying the secret in their minds.... all the Hoffa movies and docs are just assumptions

I love this scene. I always thought how paranoid you could be dealing with these kind of people. Maybe it was a fish maybe it was a dead body, who knows...

The dude that plays Sally is underrated as hell he basically carried the entire part of the hoffa killing in the movie

This is the best dialogue ever written in the world of cinema!!! LOL :-D :-D :-D

This scene felt very out-of-place and built a sense of dread. Loved the change in rhythm, and that's why Scorcese is a master

Felt so relatable. I recall some nerve-wracking moments in my life where I tried to focus on/talk about mundane things. It's like the brains way of providing a distraction, any distraction, to cope. That is pretty much this scene. The viewer knows whats about to happen. It's a tense situation. Then here comes this comical banter right in the middle of it. For a brief second the scene gives you a much welcome distraction. But in the back of the viewers mind: something terrible is about to happen.

The greatest scene in movie history, it really is.

“There was a fish waiting for me there” is the most ambitious and ambiguous way of saying “you not making it home tonight boo boo”

The two can be difficult to distinguish at times. Tarantino is Scorsese with the insanity meter set to 110.

This is why Marty is a genius. It's the little scenes that are so good. "What kind of fish"🤣

It’s amazing how Scorsese made a scene with just dialogue so memorable. Very nice scene I give this movie a 10/10

Absolutely, much like the literal rat at the end of The Departed, another great Scorcese film. Sometimes these literal metaphors work better because they tell the audience the guy should've seen it, it was obvious.

I love this scene and roll my ass off every time I watch it. There had to be bloopers when filming this. It’s, tense, funny, fucked up and brilliant.

The amount of times the fish is mentioned in this scene is awesome 😂 And it’s funny cause eventually did end up explaining it to somebody else (Hoffa)
