The Irishman | Umbertos Clam House | “Crazy” Joe Gallo
Ойын-сауық
In the wee hours of April 7, 1972 “Crazy Joe" Gallo (played by Sebastian Maniscalco), one of the most vicious mobsters in the Mafia, decided to continue celebrating his birthday (after a night seeing Don Rickles at the Copacabana with friend Jerry Orbach) with his wife and daughter at Umbertos Clam House in Little Italy, New York City. This famous restaurant, originally located on the northwest corner of Mulberry and Hester Streets, opened in February of 1972 and was mob-owned. It was only two months after it opened that this infamous gangland hit of Gallo took place inside and outside the restaurant where he died on the sidewalk inches from the gutter. His wife said four short, Italian-looking guys shot him and his bodyguard, Pete “The Greek.” The New York Police Department believed it was a lone gunman. The police disseminated information that it was multiple gunmen so, when tips came in for a lone gunmen, those were the leads they would follow. Gallo's wife, Sina, screamed out loud to all at the funeral, “There will be blood on the streets, Joey!” And there was. Hitmen from Vegas were sent up and mistakenly shot four innocent people and killed two of them. There never was any indictments on the Gallo hit. However, in the film 'The Irishman,’ the script by Steven Zaillian, based on the book by Charles Brandt, uses circumstantial evidence and the opinion of "mob experts," that Frank Sheeran (played by Robert De Niro) made the hit at the behest of Russell Bufalino (played by Joe Pesci). They had enough of Crazy Joe’s reckless ways and his birthday was appropriate and in front of his wide and daughter. It is now only folklore who did it. But Joe Gallo died on that corner where the name “Umbertos” is engraved on the corner of the sidewalk where he bled to death like a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This was no acting award. This was the real deal and New York takes the cake when it comes to mob hits.

My understanding is that hitmen didn't bother with the mask. They relied on the traditional unreliability of eyewitness testimony, along with the fact that pretty much nobody wanted to get involved as a witness in a mob hit. The important bit was getting rid of the evidence of the crime by either dumping the guns or leaving a clean weapon at the scene.

It did not happen this way. The Irishman did not kill Gallo.
The"Irishman" didn't fit the descriptions given of the shooter and was not likely the killer. More likely this wasn't a planned hit given Gallo's celebrating in public with his family. Instead this may have been an opportunistic payback for a beating of a Gambino capo in a different restaurant a few years before by the Gallo crew. That beating was only halted by the intervention of a Genovese crew who were nearby. That capo, and now a powerful and feared underboss, was Aniello Dellacroce, of the Gambino family and overseer of the "blue collar" section of the family (read: traditional street crime and killers). His headquarters was in Little Italy and its been said Gallo was spotted going into Umberto's and Dellacroce decided it was time for a final reckoning. After the hit it was reported by law enforcement officials that high fives were going around that morning at the Gambino clubhouse.
@mikeprevost8650
8 ай бұрын
Dellacroce was John Gotti's mentor. When Dellacroce died in 1985, Gotti was infuriated when Paul Castellano didn't attend his wake and funeral. Castellano was under indictment in the Commission case and didn't want to be seen in the company of other mobsters. It was one of the motives behind Gotti killing him outside of Spark's Steak House. By that time, the other indicted bosses were aware that the Feds had bugged Big Paulie's mansion on Staten Island, and had hours of tape of him discussing Mob business with his Dominican mistress, so they didn't object to a change in "management" with the Gambinos.

Even they were "interested" in that rumor. Truth be told they were a paranoid group. As for John Gotti, Sammy the Bull even told him basically to STFU. Not in so many words but to that effect. John thought he was "Golden". Turns out that he WASN'T! Truth be told the only guy that was untouchable was a black guy named Nicky Barnes.
