    I imagine that when humans eventually reach other planets, if they have to build greenhouse ecosystems to sustain themselves, the people responsible for those will look, act and sound exactly like Charles. I doubt that there are more than a thousand people on Earth who have thought through, understand and most importantly cares about all the aspects a man-made aquatic ecosystem as well as he does. Charles was far more polite with his critics than they deserve.

After my husband and I started breeding guppies both as a hobby and enrichment for the turtle and Dempsey's, soon realized I had healthier faster growing and faster breeding guppies with a tank full of mulm and healthy algae for them to snack on! Both my turtle and my Dempsey's are happy as can be and water changes have dropped significantly over the last few years. In an aquarium it's okay to clean the front facing glass for visibility leave the rest!

    @@goliadfarms7029 I suspect that is accurate. So many people think that they are an individual who happens to live on earth... instead of realizing that we **are** the earth. Whatever we do to the earth and the water, we do to ourselves. Ongoing, generational trauma has created the misconception that "this is just how humans are" instead of "wow, traumatized people really struggle to maintain their humanity". Your rants are a reminder that we don't *have* to live this way. We actually are capable (and healthier) to make decisions by centering working *with* nature and centering the land. Thank you for being environmentally ethical.

    I've been on and off in the hobby for about 45 years, and I even have a university degree in a related subject. I absolutely love your set-up, and I have no doubt that the natural, low-tech approach to fish breeding will come to dominate over the expensive, technology-laden, highly labour-intensive and water-wasting laboratory-style approaches we see elsewhere. The idea that a tank needs to be "clean" for fish to breed is deeply misguided. It should be dirty as hell, with great water quality. I'm working on some experiments now in your vein, but much smaller scale. Thanks for showing the way.

    Did you ever read the Wikipedia entry about the wolves and moose on Isle Royale? It came to mind when you mentioned keeping feeder guppies together with the cichlids. In the absence of any safe shelters for the guppies, I'm guessing that their numbers would steadily decline until they were all gone. I just read this in the Wikipedia entry for guppies... "Schooling is more favored by evolution in populations of guppies under high predation pressure, exerted either by predator type or predator density.[35] Coloration of guppies also evolves differentially in response to predation. Male guppies that are brighter in color have an advantage in mating as they attract more females in general, but they have a higher risk of being noticed by predators than duller males. Male guppies evolve to be more dull in color and have fewer, smaller spots under intense predation both in wild and in laboratory settings.[36] Female guppies in a high-predation environment also evolve to prefer brightly colored males less, often rejecting them." That last part runs counter to the handicap principle, which is the theory that showiness in males, such as peacocks, is an honest (trustworthy) signal of fitness, given that they can avoid predation despite attracting more attention from predators. I'm really looking forward to your video about the McCauley Springs guppies! In Afghanistan I took a pic of what I'm guessing were guppies in rapidly dwindling puddles in drainage ditches. The fish barely moved at all, it was fascinating. It inspired me to put a couple guppies from the LA River into the relatively large tanks of my bromeliads in order for them to eat the mosquito larvae. The fish survived for a few months, until some snail bait fell into the tanks. I no longer use any unnatural means for pest control. Not sure if this is a silly question, but all else being equal, do you wish all your vats were see-through? I'm most excited about your Vanilla!! I have a small Vanilla chamissonis happily growing in pure pumice with the drainage holes an inch from the bottom. If I lived near you I'd love to be your plant guy!

    I have read the same study. A friend of ours, Dr. Caitlin Gabor at Texas State University, studies mollies, specifically Amazon mollies (Poecilia formosa) and the males of two species that mate with those mollies. Amazon mollies are all females. They mate with either P. latipinna or P. mexicana males, but the sperm contributes no DNA to the embryos. The offspring are all clones of the P. formosa mother. Dr. Gabor found that males from populations that haven't been exposed to P. formosa actually prefer the P. formosa females over their own. But in populations that have a long history with P. formosa, males don't have that preference. While sperm is cheap for a male to produce, having flashy colors and fins make them easy marks for predators when they are courting. Males can afford that risk if their genes are being passed on, but can't if the courtship doesn't lead to their own offspring. That's an interesting use of natural control for your bromeliads. We place Gambusia affinis in all our outdoor water troughs for mosquito control. It would be interesting if the tanks were transparent. One thing I've noticed is that when our fish are transferred to aquaria they are very shy for a couple of days until they get used to being able to see long distances. Our tiny Vanilla plant had several new leaves and air roots. Charles

    I am shocked anyone sees dirty and algae as a problem; Have they ever been in nature? Nice tip on the craft wire, I know a few places to could use that.

    Yes, nature can be a bit messy, but also very productive if you let it. Susie came up with the craft wire idea when I complained about the wire we were using. Craft wire doesn't corrode and remains pliable. Charles

    Have you ever collected the ferals that live between the vats? I'm curious about the hybrids and mutations that could arise from that!

    We have collected them. We have aquarium maintenance customers who want them. And we have used some of them in breeding programs. Our Dolphin Peacock lines originated with a male captured from Greenhouse 1 sump. Just a couple of days ago I caught a male sailfin molly from Greenhouse 1 floor gutters. I had been watching him for a couple of weeks. There is a short video of him coming up. There are other fish I've considered capturing and using too. One thing we never do is use a floor gutter or sump fish in pure species breeding colonies. No matter how similar a feral fish may look to a pure species, you can't be certain of its parentage. Fascinating video as always. I'm curious: by 'feeder guppies', do you mean that the fish eat the guppies, or they eat the guppy fry?

  • @goliadfarms7029

    They are called feeder guppies since our wholesale customers buy them as feeders for large fish. I'm sure our cichlids eat some fry and probably some adults, but despite that the guppies do fine with the cichlids. Charles

    Good evening, is it possible for you to show us how you feed the fish? Do you feed the fish in the sump? How heavy do you feed etc, all the best, I really enjoy the content!

    I will do a feeding video, probably an evening one since the fish seem more active then. According to Susie, wife and business manager, I way overfeed; but I can do that without water quality issues due to our robust plant filtration. Charles

    Always enjoy watching! I'm why you want to discourage snails. Do they eat eggs or something??

  • @goliadfarms7029

    @goliadfarms7029

    The biggest issue with snails for us is when they overpopulate and make it difficult to sort fish. Susie doesn't like sorting small fish out from hundreds of snails. Also, if there are lots of snails, especially the large Mystery Snails, the fish can get scale damage from the shells when we are netting the fish. Snails will eat eggs, but most of what we currently raise are either mouthbrooding cichlids or livebearers, to that isn't a problem. Charles

    @@goliadfarms7029 thanks for the insight. I've been wondering wether or not to introduce trumpet snails into some dirted tanks. They're good for the substrate but I'm concerned they might disrupt egg layers so have been avoiding.
