Day 6 of Recovery brings GOOD NEWS and LIVE BREEDERS!!! - Texas Winter Storm 2021

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Sixth Day of Recovery and Assessment of Losses from the Texas Winter Storm of 2021
Today we moved into Greenhouse #1, which fared better than #2. In this video we break down a 300 gallon breeding vat of survivors. Stick around at the end of the video for underwater footage of the fish in this vat.
We've had lots of requests for a GoFundMe, so we set one up.
Here's the link: gf.me/u/zkkazc
We also had requests for a donation method that will accept PayPal, so we set up a FundRazr.
Here's the link: fundrazr.com/a1mRpf?ref=ab_49...
Anyone that donates can ask Charles a questions that will be answered in a video on our channel.
The overwhelming outpouring of support from the fish community has been humbling and so appreciated. Thank you all!
Carl
Big thanks to @IFG. He put out a video supporting us and is going to donate the ad revenue from it to our recovery efforts.

I absolutely love all of your videos even the sad ones I am so sorry for what you went through but it is very valuable to me since I am over in Eastern Australia and though our temperatures are fairly mild winter can still get pretty cool here and I am starting up somethin similar to you but on a much smaller scale as a hobby small buisness and just for fun but I am learning a lot what works what failed how to set things up here to work well we are classed warm temperate and never at least very very rarely get to freezing but can get down into 50's and sometimes 40's but I currently have a few outside tubs with heaters I can get by in tubs with fishtank heaters and some plastic over but want to try a greehouse and still deciding how to provide extra heat when needed as cheaply as I can. Love the way you use plants, I breed mostly guppies atm but want to try some fish that are known to be fairly hardy that could stand a bit lower temps outdoors how do you think the texas cichilds would go here outside? I think I would still need some heat but is there a minimum I could set a heater to for the couple of months they might need it? Can they be crossed with any other cichlids to make a hardier strain? I know you must be busy just thought you would be a good person to ask! Take care!

Sorry for the tardy reply. Please keep me posted on your progress. I always like to see how others are doing things. Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) ranges into the Texas Hill Country and is fairly cold hardy. I've kept them outside in concrete water troughs during winters in which there was ice on the water. That means the bottom water temperature was no warmer that 4C (~39F). The Texas cichlids were fine. One of our grandbrats (errr...granddaughters) mated a Texas cichlid male to a convict cichlid (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus) female producing two batches of fry before the female died. The resulting fish are in our greenhouses now. The hybrids suffered no losses during last year's Texas Winter Storm, so they seem to have inherited the Texas cichlid cold hardiness. So far, those hybrids have not produced offspring when mated together. I'll try again this spring. There are other species in the genus Herichthys (14 by itis.gov count). I imagine all of those could hybridize, but all the other species' ranges are tropical. Charles

@@goliadfarms7029 Hi Charles thanks for the reply! That is great info I may just give the Texans a go over here. I have heard of them doing fine outside in Sydney in glass tanks! And it gets colder in Sydney than where I am and I imagine glass tanks would fluctuate a lot more than a pond that is set in the ground or insulated a bit. I will let you know how it goes. I had heard of gymno geophagus gymno genis? Forgive my bad spelling if I got that wrong being kept in cold water tanks in the UK along with Buenos Aires tetra and peppered cory down to 10c without ill effect but those gymnos are very hard almost impossible to get in Australia. If I can ask with the texans I have seen a couple of varieties here a wild type and an emerald green I am not sure if the green would be as tough I might start with the wild types and see how they go. It would be a very rare freak event if our temps ever got down to 4c in the water and we have never had ice here we would never get snow we are at sea level near the coast in a warmer micro climate but just over the highway inland they can get quite a bit colder. I have kept various barbs and danios outdoors and some catfish that tolerate cooler water and they did great they grew very big! We call them sucking cats they stay pretty small a lot of people use them to eat algea in ponds with goldfish. We are in a 1000 year freak flood event atm we are on a hill so not as badly off but we have had so much rain I fear I have lost some fish to the ponds flooding and it has been too wild out to do much checking yet. I have a guppy pond and some neo shrimp ponds I am worried about. I did see some in there a few days ago but we have had a foot more of rain since so fingers crossed! It is at least not cold.

@@Firebird894 The Herichthys genus has 10 species according to our go-to taxonomic source, itis.gov. H. cyanoguttatum is definitely cold hardy. H. carpintis ranges into South Texas and did survive the Texas Winter Storm in our greenhouses despite cold temperatures. Be sure that none escape into the wild since H. cyanoguttatum is considered invasive by the USGS (see nas.er.usgs.gov/viewer/omap.aspx?SpeciesID=443) Charles

@@goliadfarms7029 Thankyou Charles I will look those up over here and see if they are avaliable. No chance of them getting into the wild from my place unless they can survive in saltwater I have no freshwater creeks close downhill from me is only stormwater running straight into saltwater and out to sea. I only have guppies, rainbow fish and some gambusia outside atm they all survived the recent floods and cold snap well most of them some got washed out and they would have died temps did not drop real low and the guppies have a heater but it was struggling but I checked yesterday and the pond was missing a few females but there was all the males and a tonne of babies couldnt even count them they may have enjoyed the big water change. The guppies I have were bred in Australia in a PH of 6.5 to 7.5 and the breeder never checked or worried about hardness and these guppies are tough they don't even need the crushed coral I put in, in fact I may have made the water too hard for them since I was going off advice of imported guppies these ones seem to do worse in hard water which I did not expect it seems to iritate the gills and cause them to flash. I had treated for a bunch of external parasites especially gill flukes as they would line themselves up and rub each gill on plants and airline tubes and nothing I treated with stopped it. A vet suggested reducing the PH and so far I tried some in softer cooler water and they are not flashing. So that was interesting to me. I set up some experiments and so far 24c and neutral PH and our soft tap water seems to suit them just right. I guess it is what they have had generations bred in and it is less work for me. Thanks for the tips!!

I expect using plants for filtration, non tap water, and optimal feeding is as effective in practicing clean aquaculture as in raising healthy human children- I fill my house with greenery for oxygen, give them pure water, and feed them real food from an actual farmer: pastured meat, eggs, raw milk, butter, and grow my own pesticide-free fruit and veg. I can't remember the last time any of my children had a sniffle. Keeping one hand in the medicine cabinet is lazy fishkeeping (or parenting), useful for virtue signaling, not so much for actual health. Think of the mosquito larvae those fish get alone!- my pond-raised guppies are pretty much immortal. Keeping toxins out of our systems and being well fed, we deal with pathogens pretty effectively. It is the neglected tank that allows ich to proliferate, not the presence of the parasites, which are probably not as ubiquitous as tetanus in soil (billions and billions in any average square inch- only a problem when cultured anaerobically inside the body, which a healthy body doesn't sweat, that's why we have circulation, whether in our bodies or the bodies of water in which we keep our fish), but acknowledged to exist more than we'd like to think about. Nature has it covered, and never lies to us for a buck.

To lose over a ton of fish along with entire lines, that's got to be not only a huge setback, but devastating for the business. Is there anything the KZread community can do to help?

Of course a like and subscribe will always help. Also, we've had lots of requests for a GoFundMe, so we set one up yesterday. Here's the link: gf.me/u/zkkazc The overwhelming outpouring of support from the fish community has been humbling and so appreciated. Thank you!
