hikaru did announce he was going to be retiring from full time chess competition to focus on streaming but now he's qualified for the candidates so it's probably his last hurrah to see if he can face magnus or not and perhaps become world champion, his lifelong goal, otherwise he will likely be fully retired from over the board competition and just keep streaming and playing for money online
Much respect to Levon, his praise towards Hikaru even made me feel good.
Aronian on Hikaru Nakamura : "... talk about players that are not very good, and comment on it - that's a tough job, a really tough job" - ha ha!

No she understands, but historically Chess culture has been defined by gatekeeping and elitism, especially at the highest levels. A lot of top players have dissed Hikaru for straying from the path of elite chess and instead bringing chess to the masses. There's also more than a bit of jealousy mixed in since Hikaru is making more money than you can get from the competitive chess circuit. A lot of those top players also attacked agadmator for similar reasons. They're mad at Hikaru for abandoning elite chess, and they're mad at agadmator for commentating on chess while he's not even an IM. Smart players, such as Levon, realize that popularizing chess is actually a good thing for everyone involved. More viewers translates to more sponsorships, bigger prize pools, and more fans. A lot of top players tend to be socially awkward and introverted, and having someone like Hikaru serve as a public face for the sport means that they can focus more on playing their best and winning tournaments. Hikaru brings viewers into chess, and then people pick who they like and don't based on play style (and fashion in Levon's case).

@@theoremipsum I think, Magnus understands that too. And actually tried to create online content, not for money, but just for promoting chess. He also collaborated with Botez sisters. So yeah, some top chess GMs realize how important of a work Hikaru is doing.

And what does Hikaru stream on KZread and Twitch? Soccer or chess? His main source of income comes from chess... Moreover, Hikaru has been for years on top of the leaderboard of chess.com on both bullet and blitz, therefore people are interested to watch him because many perceive him as the best or second-best in quick time controls.

@@socratead And streaming chess does not make you a chess professional. Botez sisters make more money than a doctor or engineer. Levy on youtube makes millions by posting videos about chess. They are streamers and content creators. They are not chess professionals because the videos are about chess.
Hikaru hasn’t retired from chess. He just has his priorities straight and puts streaming first. Why not? FIDE does a terrible job of organizing and promoting chess. Chess players didn’t have many options in the past, but they do today with social media. Unfortunately the FIDE leaders still live in the past. Good job by Dina though, you’ve got to love this lady.

Can you tell me any other organization that has promoted chess better than FIDE over a significant period of time? It is very easy to criticize and at the same time not come with anything better in place. This reminds me of Kasparov with his ghost chess organizations in the nineties: he pretended to make something better than FIDE and instead he just created short-lived vehicles to support his hegemony over the world chess championship title.
Petrosian is emblematic in my mind of creative strategy having potential to beautifully supersede the elements of standard understanding. Of course, while perhaps not as original as the genius of Petrosian, Fischer stands emblematic of dogged preparation and an unassailable devotion to precision. As Fischer proved these principle forces are pernicious to the subtleties of stylistic genius, it has been observed that his play was essentially devoid of style. I am unsure if that is even possible, but... "Perfection has no style" - Najdorf. Petrosian played the games that I most enjoy studying.
Levon is well spoken. Respect.

Petrosian was 43 years old and he was past his prime when losing to Fischer. To put this in perspective Kasparov retired at 41 years old and Fischer retired at 29 years old. Moreover, Fischer's return to chess at 49 years old was at a 2600ELO level. Fischer would have lost at a pretty significant margin to the younger players such as Karpov and Kasparov at that old age. Try to not oversimplify. And to have things right the score was Fischer 6 1/2 to Petrosian 2 1/2 (Petrosian won game 2 of the Candidates Final with Fischer). Funny that your completely inaccurate comment has already 6 likes... Prior to that match in 1971, the score between Petrosian and Fischer was equal with 4 wins each and 11 draws. Moreover, the match was also equal after the first five games at 2 1/2 each.
