What a great interview. I've always liked Wesley So, he is a very humble and gracious player. It was very interesting to see the role that Mrs. Key and her family have played in his life. Surely God is with him. Mrs. Key is a very strong and wise woman, which is exactly what Wesley needs in his life.

@@frankchurch7271 - That's a really good question. Jesus once said about John the Baptist, that there was no one born of woman who was greater than John. But strangely, John the Baptist was beheaded by King Herod. I think most would agree that being beheaded is much worse than losing a chess game. My question to you is this : if Jesus (God in the flesh) said no one is greater than John, why did he "lose" his head (literally...)? Perhaps, that sheds some light on the question, "Why does God allow "bad" things to happen to His people; even though He also testifies, "I am with you to the very end".

@@lopezmt5 Because in life, the "end-game" is not about this worldly "life" but the true life that Jesus gives. John the Baptist may have lost his "worldly life" after he rebuked King Herod Antipas for divorcing his wife . But he has gained eternal life that God brings. "Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it." The Good News: Dedicating your life to Jesus ensures that he will support you in your times of need and provide salvation of the soul. To the atheists and agnostics, reading this might make you think we are just bible-thumping religious fanatics. But ask yourself this, do you really think in your hearts of hearts that all of the world and LIFE started from nothing? Something starts from nothing? Once you decide that there must have been a God (not the god of the gaps but the scientific rationalization and philosophical deduction of intelligent design out from NOTHING) then the next step is to find who is this so-called God. This is the start of your spiritual awakening and thirst for the search (and hopefully to worship in awe-and adoration to the True God).

@@nicbentulan I think it’s probably wanting to avoid reminding a traumatic situation too. Like from Wesley’s perspective, he had his parents choose to abandon him for a better life, and it appears that they never even contacted him or tried to reunite. Having that happen as a kid is devastating. It’s like being rejected from the very people you thought would be the last ones to do so. It probably is one of those things you want to forget and out behind you as soon as possible.

I loved the first 20:40 of this interview and I appreciate how unselfishly Lotis Key has helped Wesley So as well as how appreciative he is of her help. And as Grandmasters go, Wesley So seems like a really nice guy. But I strongly dislike the whole idea of chess960. Naturally I don't mind chess960 as a chess variant. But I would hate seeing chess960 substantially replace classical chess in FIDE events. Fortunately chess960 is unlikely to replace classical chess because its main appeal is to the super talented (like So), and the super lazy, who rarely approach even the 1800 level. In addition chess960 takes most of the creativity out of chess because only in classical chess can most players aspire to play gambits systematically and fully develop their attacking skills thereby. The computer says the Stafford Gambit is either losing or close and Magnus Carlsen agrees. But good luck beating Eric Rosen with White against the Stafford Gambit unless you are a Grandmaster or close. In classical chess there are many such possibilities and 40 years ago the Benko Gambit was as popular as the Stafford Gambit is now. In chess960 almost all of that goes away. It's all too easy for almost otherworldly super talented Grandmasters (nearly all Grandmasters unfortunately) to want to take work out of chess and make it "just art." In other words they want to reduce chess to simply a matter of talent and nothing but talent. But I really believe that one of the most redeeming qualities of chess is that it rewards work much more than say poker in which only talent matters. Of course even in chess only super talented players can become Grandmasters and even 2200 is beyond the reach of even most serious chess players. But only in chess can almost anyone who isn't severely disabled reach at least the 1800+ level if he/she puts in an hour of productive hard work per day for say 5 - 10 years. In no other game I know of is anything remotely close to that possible. World class players like Wesley So (whose games I love to play over) would do well to remember that without the far more numerous but equally much less talented 1800 - 2200 level players, they would need another line of work. Naturally all Grandmasters want everything in chess to just be "fun" and thereby make all the hard work of much less talented players useless. But for many of us untalented 1800 - 2200 level players, without the chance to at least reach that extremely modest level, chess would cease to be fun. We would then likely stop closely following Grandmasters like Wesley So. Unlike chess, in most games having only a modest amount of talent is almost as useless as having no talent for it at all. And I dare say that nearly all the top 50 players in the world today will be retired or semi-retired from chess in 30 years even in the unlikely event that chess960 were to replace chess in FIDE events. So much for their claim that they only play for "fun" and for the love of the game. They play because they are super talented AND love the game and most of them will cease to play when only their love of the game remains. Take a look at any list of top 50 players and look 30 years later to see how many still actively play and you will see that this is the truth. I'm sure that playing 2400 strength chess when one once was 2700 strength has no appeal for most Grandmasters and they will stop playing actively long before that occurs. Sure there are plenty of people who don't mind playing at the 1200 - level for years or even decades. 99%+ of those players put in no work or next to no work on their chess and that's fine, it's their decision. But to me anyone who a year after starting to play "serious" chess doesn't know how to win the Lucena pawn up rook ending or draw the Philidor pawn down rook ending isn't a serious chess player after all because those endings are easily enough learned. And I would respectfully submit that primarily untalented 1800 - 2200 level players make it possible for talented Grandmasters to earn a living playing and sometimes teaching chess. Without them not enough people would be able to appreciate the chess skills of the likes of Wesley So. Grandmasters like him would do well to remember that.

@@nicbentulanmy response is that such talk is shortsighted and only self-serving in the short run (which is all most people care about or think about anyway). Grandmasters are just people like everyone else. And people generally take a short-term selfish view towards everything. Fischer random (Chess960 is not chess, just a chess variant) is easier for super talents so they prefer it to chess. Grandmasters don't tend to appreciate that they are blessed with a special and precious talent. Most people aren't super talented at anything so most GMs can't see how lucky they are. GMs also don't tend to appreciate the untalented rank and file players who put them on pedestals. Without those rank and file players most if not all Grandmasters would need to find other work. I understand, Grandmasters hate draws and losses with much less talented players who work hard. I say too bad about them and tough! I have no sympathy for people who want to take all the work out of life. Sorry, that's not how life works. I also have no sympathy for people who don't care if super untalented players like me can't compensate anymore for an extreme lack of talent. Essentially most Grandmasters want to turn chess into poker where talent alone matters. If you take preparation out of chess you risk losing the rank and file players. If that forced selfish Grandmasters to find other work it would be a major silver lining in that otherwise grim scenario. If chess no longer rewarded hard work many super untalented players like me (all-time high USCF rating 1970 and 2039 on lichess) would abandon chess and its selfish elite. I know I'm bad at chess but I'm always learning and chess is beautiful. Yet without hard work so that my chess won't be completely awful I don't see the point of playing. Incidentally most top players will retire or become semi-retired once well past their prime. There will always be a few, but relatively very few, former super Grandmasters like Spassky, who happily play 2200 level chess for the love of the game when their health permits. Fortunately migrating from chess to Fischer random is not up to just great players and very lazy, bad, bad players. Otherwise Fischer random would have replaced chess long ago. Why should untalented rank and file players care about Grandmasters if they can't become reasonably strong themselves because hard work is no longer useful? My nearly 69 years of life has taught me that there's almost no correlation between chess skill and general intelligence levels. Like most other people, most Grandmasters never think critically about anything not directly career related. And they also don't tend to think about their long term future but only instant gratification. This is why the world including even the chess world is a mess. If you take opening preparation out of chess you take a lot of the beauty out of it too. Relatively untalented players cannot aspire to play interesting attacking chess without opening preparation. Except for instant gratification for super GMs (not even good for them in the long run) I can't see any benefit to Fischer random at all.

@@nicbentulanyes Eric Rosen does play the Stafford Gambit quite a bit even in classical chess. And he wins with it a lot, often quickly. Just because the computer condemns it and Magnus Carlsen doesn't play it, doesn't mean it's not dangerous in the hands of a strong attacking IM like Rosen.

@@nicbentulan Happy Easter to you too. Is that Russian Orthodox Easter? In any case please permit me to address your two questions here now: 1 - If the Fischer random variant replaced chess there would be far fewer pro-players. Yes that's right. Chess (not Fischer random which is not chess) is the only game I know in which untalented players can easily become better than 99+% percent of the population with a bit of productive hard work. Although the chess of 1800 - 2199 level players is "painful" for most Masters to watch, without these rank and file players no one would care about the Fischer random careers of the extremely talented few. I know my chess is bad (never higher than 1970 U.S.C.F. or 2039 on lichess.org) but even so being better than 99% percent of the population has its satisfactions. But the chess elite seem to care only about their jolt of validation from the chess rank and file who they seem to take for granted and regard with barely disguised contempt. 2 - Kasparov was arguably once the greatest chess player of all-time and he has undeniable charisma. But in the comments you reference (no doubt accurately related by you) he is being extremely self- absorbed and short sighted because his remarks aren't even in the long term self-interest of chess pros. Kasparov is ancient for a chess pro and Fischer random cannot restore his youth. Of course he would like everything to be easy, simply rely on his extraordinary talent, and who cares about 1800-2200 level players. There is a pretty gross sense of entitlement here (and I'm not picking on anyone in particular, they are nearly all guilty of this). Instead of appreciating how blessed he has been to have had extraordinary talent for something, he is unhappy because he is no longer a World Champion in his prime. Nor does this elitism only infect Grandmasters. It infects even most FIDE Masters. Look if you would at the KZread video linked below. Let me draw your attention to the blitz game at 20:03 - 30:37 of the video and the comments of FIDE Master Arman Geivondyan. The game itself is incidental, it's his comments I want to draw attention to here. The game is from a recent live stream of Pinkamena (9 year-old Kiseniia Petrova) who is now about 1900 blitz rated on lichess.org. She and her 14 year-old sister (now approaching 2400 blitz on lichess.org) may become very, very strong if they remain interested in chess. But note that Geivondyan's chess insights are helpful and worthwhile (as well as being refreshingly honest). Yet it is clear that he can barely contain his disgust at the "painful" exhibition by both players in this G/3/+2 blitz game. Alright I do understand. For a roughly 2380 FIDE rated FM the blitz chess in this game is bad. But for blitz chess at the club level it's not that bad. Not that it matters but I would also point out that both players can play much better than in the linked game. I must also point out that Geivondyan did not opine here (or anywhere else I'm aware of) about Fischer random. But Geivondyan's tone (totally without malice and refreshingly honest though it is) is what I would ask you to focus on here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hK1omspwpsLSp6g.html Moments after the game I reference here Geivondyan says "What’s good about [her play] is that she is nine years old and at some point she’ll get more skill and more knowledge. When you are a kid, the only thing that matters is your tactical skill, so just counting moves, one by one. And [Petrova is better than] other nine year old girls in this component but right now she’s bad at everything else because she is a kid. This will be fixed at some point.” To me that seems to be an unreasonably harsh criticism of her play and if I were her and saw him say that on KZread I would be pretty annoyed at him. After all the endgame skills shown in this game while not close to Master level were well beyond what e.g. most 1600 level players possess. Geivondyan would be better served to simply point out the missed chances and explain them in a straight forward way without framing them in such negative terms. Let me be clear. I appreciate all the hard work of the strong Masters. And I appreciate their talents too even if they themselves don't seem to me to appreciate their own talents nearly as much. But the point is that most strong Masters (not just GMs but even FMs) live in their own fantasy world. They seem to expect everyone to give them endless validation in return for nothing and seem to then become disappointed when that doesn't happen. Again I don't want to put words in Geivondyan's mouth. He may be a very nice guy. And again I'm not aware that Geivondyan has opined about Fischer random at all. No, I'm responding to So's comments (and Kasparov's comments as well as many others). My problem is with them, not Geivondyan. All most GMs seem to care about is that in the short run their career would be easier without opening theory (because they unlike most of us are supremely talented). They hate that opening theory gives their much less talented hard working counterparts a puncher's chance. But that is actually good in the long run for their careers because it enables rank and file players to relate better to their chess and aspire to be more like them. Yet for some immediate gratification in the short run (better results and less work for them) they would throw that all away. To me they seem like narcissists who cannot or will not see the big picture. The big picture is this: They would warp chess beyond recognition for themselves and who cares about rank and file chess players. But if they succeeded in doing that (fortunately very unlikely) why would I accept their imposition of a chess variant in place of chess or care about their so called chess?

@@nicbentulanabove I said all I want to about Fischer's chess variant. But I do want to address TL;DR [too long didn't read]. You could to worse than to read my entire comment though of course you need not feel constrained to follow that suggestion. The world, including the chess world, is a mess. And it's a mess because bad people (here I refer to no one in particular) use social culture to manipulate others as much as they can. Their top social rule tries to manipulate people to be as superficial and shallow as possible. To do this they made a social rule against reading or discussing anything in depth. They don't want you to see how empty and worthless their so called leadership is. People often say things like TL;DR or n00b [novice] to seem sophisticated by demonstrating mastery of this moment's slang. But when they do they often just unwittingly signal a willingness to be manipulated for just a bit of social validation. To avoid signaling a willingness to be manipulated I suggest you use plain English instead of Internet slang. When social trend setters (not their followers) say TLDR they mean "you broke a social rule (paraphrasing) so nothing you said is worthwhile." People also sometimes say TLDR to avoid responding to anything they have no reasonable response to. Of course social rules shouldn't be violated without any reason to violate them. But social culture is how bad people manipulate others into buying things they don't need with money they don't have. And social culture is how bad people manipulate others into not questioning their wild schemes too closely. People do much better when they have an inquiring mind and look into things in more depth instead of relying on social trend setters for what to think. People who refuse to be needlessly led by social trend setters tend to make better decisions about investments, healthcare decisions and other important things. They thus tend to live longer, healthier, more prosperous lives by not being slaves to social trend setters.

But more likely than not she will become more interested in fashion and boys than in chess when she hits her mid-teens if not sooner.

Humble, hard working, nice chess player. I wish Wesley all the best. However, one note, differences between protestantism and catholicism are not that small and touch important things related to Faith. I hope Wesley and his adoptive family will see that and they will join The Catholic Church.

There is a big difference between being a catholic and a born again christian. I was also a Catholic before but I quit because in Catholicism you just worship idols like Mary and the Saints which is against the Bible and you don't have a personal relationship with God Jesus Christ. Now I am a born again Christian and I have a personal relationship with Lord Jesus Christ. You can see the differences for yourself in this youtube video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJmnrNaYaK2oeco.html

@@nicbentulan Well, no. If you treat Faith seriously, you cannot discard these differences as "not important". Example: Sacraments. God wants to show us His Grace and is giving us many gifts. Only we can decide if we open ourselves to Him and His gifts. Protestants ignore such gifts as Sacraments (except baptism and Eucharist, although they don't have proper view of what Eucharist is). For a catholic, protestants are brothers/sisters in Christ, however if you love someone, it is your duty to point errors in their doing and say "brother/sister, change your way".

@@nicbentulan Long topic, so short answer is: it is really important. For specific individual, regarding this life and next, after death. And also for all people, fabric of society as religion or lack of religion (official as without God, people tend to replace Him and create false idols like Lenin or Mao), influences society and how it is build. Also, "being good person" is very vague sentence and even swimming in such shallow waters, without going deeper, does not prevent situation when people have different opinions what being "good" means.

Love Wesley's comment on religion: Catholic - Protestant, it's just a minor change, not a big deal. Northern European history might disagree. A major purpose of religion is to create differences within ethnic groups, thereby justifying wars. Much like GWB's WMD. Chess players are more honest.
