    I tow a lot with my 1/2 ton F150 ecoboost. A good addition to your videos would be to show the digital readout for water, oil, and cylinder head temps. I have a scan gauge on my truck so I can see all of my digital readouts. The analog gauges like you know stay in the center until it’s about to overheat and go into limp mode. The trans temp is also very important to have a digital readout especially when towing in hills and mountains. My opinion if you tow a lot…That trailer is too large for that truck. The weight isn’t the only issue, the aerodynamic drag of a high profile trailer has the same effect of increasing weight. You’re pushing all of that air which equates to increased weight, especially at higher speeds. Great reviews, I can tell you have experience. I’m a pilot so I think a lot about the aerodynamics.

    Great post! I’m glad to see even half ton owners know their limits and understand a trailer this size is too big. Doing this for 20-30 minutes is no problem but if I were to get on the Hwy in rush hour, things would get real really quick! I agree I should buy some more tools for these test and I will, what do you recommend, thanks again 👍🏾

    Aero drag is even worse than weight. They added resistance on a flat straight road from a trailer is 99% wind and 1% weight. I had an f150 powerboost and it was an awesome truck until I hooked up my toy hauler to it. While within the weight limit the high profile was a drag(pun intended). I have a 1 ton diesel now and it’s a much more enjoyable experience.

    @@ArkansaDave1 I say this all the time. JBs trailer empty would behave the same behind that Tundra as it did loaded in this video. Weight is not nearly as important as the size and type of trailer you’re towing. Weight matters, especially with braking but as far as traveling down the road at highway speeds the big box behind you is a bigger issue than just the weight.

    @@JB_WhoWork They make some really cool inexpensive wireless OBD port readers. It will read the data from all the sensors in your truck i.e. oil temp, oil press, water temp, trans temp, load, duty cycle, cylinder head temps, etc. You can more accurately monitor the load being placed on the truck and it's components vs. looking at a gauge that doesn't move until it's close to exceeding a limit. You're reviews are great. Thanks for the reply.

    The whale sound is probably the waste gates for the turbos, when your engine rpm’s are up and the boost pressure is up and the rpm’s drop from a shift or letting off the gas quickly all that boost pressure has to go somewhere, so they have a waste gate that lets that out to keep from damaging the turbos, and the engine.

    Nice review. One of my first comments on your channel was saying power is not the problem with half tons. They have plenty enough power. It’s everything else when towing something that big. Even the 9,000 or 10,000 pound weight is not really the issue. It’s the size and type of trailer you’re towing. Thats like having a big box behind you. Even empty and I would be willing to bet the experience would be the same. Now as far as the truck goes, it’s setup as good as it can be by having the standard size bed. I think for the max tow half tons that should be a requirement. And being almost 6,000 pounds is a big plus. However I feel at that point you may as well just step up to a 3/4 ton gas truck. The fuel mileage would be very close to the same and then you could just roll with a trailer like that.

  • @JB_WhoWork

    @JB_WhoWork

    Жыл бұрын

    I remember when I started towing with the black trailer you mentioned that. The power is diesel feeling but gas engines don’t have the durability down so it’s a ticking time bomb compared to a diesel pickup. With this truck, I think an empty trailer would be worse because it would become a big sail behind it 🤣 fuel mileage would change as the weight affects gas engines slightly I agree with getting a 3/4 ton, the price point of these half tons and minimal payload make them rendered useless for all of my applications except my mini trailer and I have a video coming showing how a small trailer could overload this truck 👀… thanks bro 👍🏾

    Nice breakdown. Toyota has always made a really good product but it takes them FOREVER to bring changes or something new to the market. If manufacturers could move at the necessary speed to make their product better year after year, we would have phenomenal trucks. Instead they usually wait 2 to 3 years before they even make adjustments to things they know sucks from the start. In my opinion, they all need better communications teams that talk with actual owners when designing or upgrading their trucks. That would help a ton. If this is already happening, they aren’t talking with the right people most of the time. Keep those videos flying!!

    They do take forever to bring change and are always behind in that aspect. But, let’s be honest they spend years testing an developing the product before they produce it. It’s why their so damn reliable. All the failures were in testing and NOT at the cost of the consumer who has to feel the growing pains. Good thing is you can buy one beat it up till the next one comes out and it will more than likely be in good running condition.

    Hey JB, I’ve watched every single video of yours over the past year and I have to say that payload numbers on trucks don’t seem to coincide with axel capacity ratings. I might be wrong, but it seems very political. Now I understand that tires, suspension components and frame have a huge factor in all of this, however an example would be if the GMC frame of a 2500 and 3500 are the same, why so much variance in payload? If I go over payload, I might be way under axel max ratings by a huge margin, and if I beef up my suspension and add heavy springs, air suspension etc. I decrease my payload due to the weight, right? I don’t get it; I highly doubt my chassis would fall off! I love watching your videos, but the payload numbers on most trucks seem messed up to me.

    This has been an ongoing issue that has had many people scratching their heads. RAM lowered the GAWR on the 2500’s back in 2019 for the diesels however, gas trucks have higher ratings. The reason being the gas pickups have more payload. 2500/3500 pickups have different axle ratings out back (fronts sometime are the same) that limit what they can actually tow and in some of my videos if you were to take the cat scale weigh in, you can change the truck to a 3/4 and it would be over. Full throttle accelerations into a head wind? Did you expect good gas mileage? With that trailer you were probably right at max payload. That ten speed is close ratio so you’re not going to notice much change with a single downshift. A trailer that heavy requires sway control and weight distribution with any half ton to be safe. I would guess you’re way over tongue weight limit of that truck without weight distribution. With the proper hitch the truck would probably perform much better.

    7.2mpg........so we have these V6s towing big trailers. Putting tons of strain on the engine. Not even mentioning the Turbo that will need to be serviced and is a fail point from the heat it generates. Im not seeing the hype. The 5.7 gets the same if not better while towing roughly.

    No problem. Fast Lane Trucking pulled a 10,000lb trailer up the Ike Gauntlet. No issues. That engine has 479 lbs of torque. Compare that to the torque of a HD gasser. Plus the turbo's are fantastic at high altitude.

    You’ve listed a few big items for this to be a game changer…. Sway (don’t make excuses, it’s a function of half ton and this size of trailer), low payload, weak downshifts, towing in 6th (?!.!) …. It sounds like a F150 knockoff with lower payload…. It’s gonna pull at the expense of fuel.. nothing is free in life.. and the mirrors are not good tow mirrors. Let’s be honest.

  • @JB_WhoWork

    @JB_WhoWork

    This truck performed super well for a half ton but having a standard bed and air suspension probably helped a lot. The F150 did feel stronger but Ford doesn’t add rear swaybars or at least back in 2017 they didn’t and it had the most sway of all the 1/2 tons... The Tundra mirrors were pretty good though 😎

    If you make another towing video, you could show us actual total trailer weight. Doing a tow test driving into a headwind with the addition of doing full throttle 0 to 60 tests to average into you total mpgs shouldnt surprise anyone why the mpg is terrible and not a good method to review a vehicle for towing.

    Well I didn’t take it up a steep grade but what I felt is what I felt, I’ve towed with a lot of half tons and this truck by far performed the best for stability with wimpy tires

  • @matthewanderson9912

    I’m not trying to advocate for this Tundra and I do like the TFL guys but that Ike test is very specific to their location. Sure it’s a 7% grade and that’s pretty common on both sides of the country, but 11,000’ elevation is not. And also they can greatly vary the end results of the trucks by their driving habits. They have improved but it’s too easy to manipulate the things they are testing for.
