3 things I love about this film. 1) they're all American and do brilliant English accents. 2) having been in rock bands for over 50 years I have been through all of those things, even having half my drum kit falling off the drum riser. 3) the guitarist is exactly like a guitarist I used to play with, not just in looks, but his nasal voice and his mannerisms. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

The director is Rob Reiner, famous for directing many films, and got his start on the groundbreaking tv series in the 1970’s: All in the Family, and is son of another famous director/writer, Carl Reiner.

Do check out THE RUTLES: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH. It's a "mockumentary" that details the history of The Rutles (i.e. the Beatles). It was made in 1978 for NBC TV by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame - see "Monty Python and the Holy Grail) and features cameos by GEORGE HARRISON, Paul Simon and Mick Jagger. It has a lot of the original cast of Saturday Night Live (Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Gilda Radner). "The RUTLES are a living legend. A living legend that will live on long after other living legends have died."

A movie guaranteed to disappoint because every scene has become so integrated into the global subconscious - every other line is commonly quoted by people who don't know its origin. Me - I remember school history lessons being disrupted by spontaneous choruses of "you're a naughty one Saucy Jack" (hello Tom). It helps to keep in mind that most of the dialog was improvised. You do know, don't you, that the cocoon was in fact a bollock... and that Christopher Guest is a member of the English aristocracy with a seat in the house of lawd-'elp-us... and the skeletal t-shirt is a John Entwistle reference... I think the guitar solo scene isn't just parodying Jimmy "mindless violins" Page, but also Ritchie Blackmore and Adrian Belew (two quite different guys who, for all their harmonic intelligence, sometimes didn't know when to quit with the dissonance and feedback) Useless fact: All Living Fear got into a similar "puppet show first" situation with a gig in South London where they accidentally had to play the early set in front of pre-teen martial-arts students. Opening scene of this video - are you getting your rock band parodies mixed up - was your microphone something just like a "Telefunken U47" ? And, by the way - wot no All The Way Home? PS: If you want to review another rock-band-parody movie, I got just one t'ing ta say - I'll be "shocked and stooned" if you never get around to THE RUTLES! Which is on KZread.

  • @ItsTaraAnn

"Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?" "These go to eleven." Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner is indeed Marty DiBergi. What Script Fact: Although the scenarios were written in advance, much of the actual dialogue was ad-libbed. Art Imitates Art Fact: Harry Potter Author J.K. Rowling cited the movie as inspiration for the unfortunate events that cause all Defence Against The Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts to leave the job before completing a full school year. Music Enthusiast Fact: The actors are all competent musicians, so they co-wrote all the original songs and they're actually playing on the soundtrack. Although I found no charting information, Big Bottom (1984) specifically is considered a rock classic. Historical Fact: Several rock stars have commented on what an uncannily accurate spoof of the rock and heavy metal world this film was. Ozzy Osbourne said when he first watched the film, he was the only person who WASN'T laughing; he thought it was all too real. "I didn't laugh, I wept. It was so close to the truth." noted U2 guitarist The Edge. Marillion had five drummers in the space of a year between their first two albums, which guitarist Steve Rothery later admitted was "like Spinal Tap."

@@ItsTaraAnn Awesome. Blade Runner and 2001 are 2 of my top 3 films of all time, And the original BR has my top film score of all time. There's a remastered version of it on YT by Cley Hill (if I recall his channel name right). Listen to it on blast to immerse yourself in it if you can before watching BR which may very well greatly improve your experience of watching the film when you finally do. And if you haven't already, react to 2010 the sequel to 2001. It's not as ambiguous or as layered as 2001. But it answers a lot of questions that A Space Odyssey brought up like what happened to Dave and Hal. Also, although it's not as groundbreaking or revelatory it's still a great film in its own right that I think you'd get from if you enjoyed 2001. Thanks for your reactions and keep up the great work.

You spent the entire movie laughing (at least in the clips you included), and all you can say at the end was "I didn't hate it, I didn't love it"? It must take a lot for you to "love" a movie, if laughing repeatedly throughout doesn't get you there. I don't say that in a nasty way; I was just truly surprised to hear that "summary" after seeing everything I'd just seen. 🙂 So, I'm curious - what are some movies you "love"? This was my first time watching your channel, nice job. PS - the herpes thing - no, the two guys didn't kiss each other. The gag here is that band members often shared groupies on the road, so if one of them got herpes from a groupie, they all got it.

Have to remember these are first time reactions and so these are my initial thoughts and impressions of it from seeing it for the first time. Sometimes it takes me watching a movie like this a couple times to fully appreciate and catch things I may have missed in the first watch. Also… most of the time when we are doing this I’ve already had a full day of work and stuff so I may be slightly tired along with my adhd going on… so there’s a lot of factors that go into why I feel or think the way I do when watching. You will be happy to know that this was one that I actually wanted to revisit after filming and it’s now one I easily love especially after all of the trivia that I learned from this

I'd say it's neither Gen X, nor boomer. It's music freaks. The story is definitely that of a boomer band, though. But the people who went to see it - which was not many - was rock & roll fans. Ditto watching it on cable and on videotape. But I'm Gen X and other than myself and my friend, I didn't know anyone who saw it in the theater or was even aware of it before it went to heavy rotation on cable. Most of Gen X wouldn't even get half the references of this movie unless they were huge music heads (like i was) This movie works even if you don't know all the trivia. The more trivia you know, the more you get it. How many people know that the joke of Nigel using a violin during his guitar solo is a rip on Jimmy Page? Some do, most don't, but they laugh at it anyways (because it's funny). How many people know the Jimi Hendrix story of getting radio interference on his guitar during a concert? Ditto. I don't think of this as a "generational" movie, I see this as a musician/rock fan movie.....and those people come from all generations.

@@TTM9691As a Gen X I totally agree that this would have been something musicians and hard core music fans would have been first in line for since they get it. Kind of like how the movie Waiting is kind of aimed towards the food industry because I used to do that as well years ago… servers, cooks, restaurants they absolutely get it. I lived too far away from my older brother and didn’t see him often enough to remember him ever watching this in my presence but I feel very certain this was one he would have definitely watched and loved before he passed away.

@@ItsTaraAnn Awww, TaraAnn, thanks for sharing that. I'll bet he did love it! It wasn't an obscure movie, if he was the kind that would loved it, I guarantee you he found it. The word went down the grapevine like wildfire that this was a hilarious must-see movie. To this day if I meet a music fan who hasn't seen it, I would sit them down and make them watch it! :D

There are jokes in it that even many Gen X are not even going to get. The final drummer's name was Joe Besser. Joe was one of the replacements for Curly Howard in The Three Stooges.

I see many comedies that barely get a laugh or two. This movie made you laugh that much and you still do not like it? WTF?

Never said I didn’t like it. Said I don’t hate it but I don’t love it. So therefore I like it.

You look way too young to be a '79 lol. I only believed it once you started dropping references to Laverne & Shirley and WKRP. You were asking for suggestions? How about "Shawshank Redemption?" It is a drama if you've never seen it.
