Gandalf didn't "know" it was the One Ring. He suspected it might be one of the great rings of power, but he was not sure which one, or even if it really was. That is why he left Frodo that night telling him he needs to see the head of his order. He said he had questions that needed answers. Those were the questions he had. It wasn't until he found the writings of Isiuldor in Minas Tirith that he was almost sure it was the One Ring. Isiuldor said that the writing on the band was first as clear as red flame, but after it faded, it was a secret that only fire could tell. Which is why Gandalf came back to the Shire. He threw the ring in the fire to reveal any writing if it was there. Once the writing became clear again because of the fire, he knew exactly which ring it was.

@@ISavant Yes, between the party and Frodo actually leaving, it was actually quite a few months, almost a year. Jackson doesn't show that time laps in a few different places. I always also see reactors referring to Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin as "kids" or "young guys" because Jackson never makes it clear that the 4 Hobbits are actually in their 50's when they leave for that adventure. Hobbits "come of age" when they turn 33. Bilbo's party was when Frodo turned 33. He and Bilbo celebrated their birthdays together all the time. And he was in his 50's when he set off for Mount Doom. In the book, Gandalf didn't leave to leave to learn about the ring until much later. If Jackson would have followed the story to the letter, Frodo would have had the ring for nearly 20 years before Gandalf even knew it was the One Ring.

Gandalf knew that Bilbo had a magic ring, but did not suspect it was the One Ring until Bilbo started channelling Gollum at his party and didn't know for certain until he found the records of Isildur. There is a lot of magical stuff in Middle-Earth, so Bilbo having a magic ring wouldn't make anyone think of the One Ring. Everyone believed the One Ring to be lost long ago when it fell into the Great River and was believed to have carried downstream to the sea.

I heard somewhere that Gandalf assumed Bilbo's ring was one of the dwarven rings, because he found it on his adventure with the dwarves to take their treasure hoard back from a dragon. It is sort of canon that Bilbo didnt really tell anyone that he took the ring from gollum until long after his adventure, so Gandalf would only recently have become aware of his existence

I don't think anyone making comparisons to harry potter is somehow implying LotR copied something, but instead the comparisons are simply a way for people to quickly get up to speed while watching. We all relate things we watch to other things we've seen. Saying the ring is like a horcrux for example is a pretty adequate comparison. Both are vessels for somebody's lifeforce in some way. Thats a concept people with little fantasy exposure might struggle to understand. I know my parents would struggle. It's not a competition.

This was a truly delightful reaction! I love the enthusiasm shown for the movie, but even more wonderful is the precious relationship between father and daughter. So very sweet! What follows is a no spoiler mini-explanation (very simplified) to help fully appreciate The Lord of the Rings. WARNING: Do not read if you have not finished Fellowship of the Ring! There are no spoilers for the next two movies. Okay, here goes- The author is JRR Tolkien, who was an Oxford professor, a linguist/philologist and historian. He literally spent his entire life creating the world of Middle-earth, the novel published in 1954. His purpose was to write a mythology history for England, including a creation story inspired by his devout Catholic faith. The languages heard in the movie were created, completely, by Tolkien. Several dialects of Elvish, the dwarf language, and the Black Speech of Mordor. In Tolkien’s world, Eru Ilúvatar is the Creator. Aiding in fulfilling his purpose are the Valar (think archangels) and Maia (angels). Some (not all) of the Valar and Maia have significant roles through the ages. Also, a few Valar and Maia are evil. The events in LOTR take place in the Third Age, with the forging of the great rings and battle seen in the prologue occurring in the Second Age. In other words, there is a ton of history over thousands of years leading up to this particular story. Sauron, the Dark Lord, is a Maia. Gandalf and Saruman are also Maia, and they (along with three others) were sent by Eru Ilúvatar to Middle-earth to aid in the fight against Sauron. They are called the Istari, or Wizards. Their magical powers are limited but they are still very powerful. The “old man” appearance was to appeal as wise men but does not directly translate to being aged as they are literally ageless beings. They were sent to guide, instruct, and impart wisdom, not to be warriors or solve problems, hence the rare use of "magic". Incidentally, the Balrog is also a Maia (one of the evil ones), which is why Gandalf had to confront it. Elves are immortal. They can be killed in battle, but their souls return to Valinor (the Undying Lands), the dwelling place of the Valar, and are given a new body. Valinor is separated from Middle-earth, reachable only by ships built by the elves at the Grey Havens. You will often see some calling it "heaven" as a simplistic way to describe it, but this is wrong. Valinor is called the Undying Lands because immortal flesh-and-blood elves dwell there in harmony with the Valar, who are spirit beings with a bodily form. Valinor is not an after-death spirit realm like heaven. Aside from a handful of notable exceptions, elves are the only race to ever set foot on Valinor. There have been only two other elf and human unions, so Arwen and Aragorn are very unique. In all cases, the elf maiden had to choose mortality to be with the human man she loved. This is a BIG deal, just keep that in mind. Lord Elrond of Rivendell is the child of one such union. He was also faced with a choice, deciding to be an elf. His twin brother, Elros, chose to be human, becoming the first King of Númenor. Directly from his line came Elendil and Isildur, and then much later Aragorn. Side note: The vial of starlight that Galadriel gave to Frodo is captured light from the star of Earendil (very long story told in The Silmarillion) who was a half-elf and the father of Elrond and Elros. Galadriel is by far the most powerful elf in Middle-earth, and she is wholly good and wise. She was born in Valinor in a time before the sun and moon were created, so is easily 9000 years old, probably much more. She is the keeper of Nenya, one of the three elven rings. It doesn’t come into the movies, but the other two rings are kept by Elrond and Gandalf, who was given his by Cirdan, Lord of the Grey Havens. The daughter of Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn married Elrond, so Arwen is her granddaughter. Legolas is an Elven prince, the son of an Elven king from another realm which does not play into this story but does in The Hobbit. He has known Gandalf and Aragorn for a very long time. Elves and Dwarves have thousands of years of bad blood between the races, hence Gimli and Legolas not liking each other in the beginning. I’ll end with the Hobbits. They live normally as long as humans, perhaps a bit more, so Bilbo (who comes from a line of long-lived Hobbits) is old by Hobbit standards but not beyond possibility. What makes him different is that he has barely aged. Bilbo is Frodo's uncle, taken in and named Bilbo's heir when Frodo's parents died. Samwise Gamgee is Frodo and Bilbo’s gardener, so technically he works for the wealthy, upperclass Bagginses, hence the occasional “Mr. Frodo.” There is a slight class structure, as was common in England during Tolkien’s life. Merry (Meriadoc Brandybuck) and Pippin (Peregrin Took) are distantly related to Frodo. Frodo is 50 when he leaves the Shire, Samwise is 38, Merry 36, and Pippin is 26 so still in his “tweens” (Hobbits come of age at 33) which is why he tends to be the most foolish. Give him time! Facts to keep in mind: 1) The Ring has a will of its own and wants to return to the hand of Sauron, who is the only one who can truly control the power. Also, the Ring exerts a powerful evil influence on all who are close to it and evil is drawn to it. 2) Middle-earth is big! The quest lasts just over a year, a vast amount of ground is covered, and the now-splintered fellowship meet a lot of new “people” along the way. Great reaction! You will LOVE this wonderful ride. The next two movies get better and better. As others will surely note in the comments, I strongly recommend the extended versions. And speaking as a Tolkien fan for close to 50 years, what Peter Jackson et al did with these 3 movies is a true masterpiece in every conceivable way. While there was much left out due to time (believe it or not), and obviously changes in pacing, story elements, and so on must be made when adapting to cinema, the movie barely strays from the novel by Tolkien.

FYI: The reason why Gandalf didn't noticed that Bilbo had the Ring is that the ring was kind of "dormant" (that's why Bilbo could used it without seeing the great fiery eye or being chased by the Nazghuls) so Gandalf thought it was just a trinket. He knew he had stolen it from Gollum but he hadn't traced the story of the ring before that. When Bilbo showed that much attachment to the Ring, when he called it "My Precious", that's when he became suspicious and went to gather informations about both how Gollum got the Ring and on how Sauron's ring was. And the infos he got made him realised that Bilbo's ring was the One Ring

First, loved the reaction, looking forward to the rest. Second, you claimed that everyone loved Bilbo and thought him a hero. Actually, if you read the books, you'll learn that most of the adult Hobbits were not very fond of Bilbo. They all thought he was strange and mad. The Younger Hobbits loved him, because he told great stories about his adventures. The reason everyone was celebrating is because they all love parties. When a Hobbit has a birthday, it's Hobbits custom for the person who is having the birthday to give presents to others. So the Hobbits were looking forward to the party and to the presents that Bilbo was going to give them. But as for Bilbo himself, they were not very fond of him. Only a few Adult hobbits liked him. If you liked the movies, you really should check out the Unabridged books. If you're not fond of reading incredibly long books, check out the Audio Books. You'll learn a lot about what the movies were trying to tell the audience, but you'll learn a great deal of things Peter Jackson never even toughed on in the movies. I think you'll love the story even more.

At 20:00, Arwen says "I choose a mortal life." In Tolkien's book Elrond and his twin brother Elros had an Elvish mother and a Human father; they were the Peredhil, or Half-elven. The Valar, the Guardians of the World, gave them a choice of which kindred to belong to. Elros chose to be of mortal kind and became the first King of the Numenoreans. Elrond chose to be of Elvish kind and therefore was immortal. His children were also given the same choice. So this was a major decision on her part. She was nearly 2800 years old at the time of the movie; Elrond's birth date isn't specified, but he was over 5000 years old.

All Gandalf knew at first was that Bilbo had a magic ring that let him walk invisible. However, 60 years passed after Bilbo found the Ring without Bilbo showing any sign of aging. No one would ever mistake a 99-year-old man for a 50-year-old man, yet Bilbo looked exactly the same at 111 as he did at 51, when he set out to help a group of Dwarves reclaim their kingdom. Bilbo also eventually began to speak to Gandalf about how much of a weight it had become on his mind. That he was never easy in mind unless he had it with him, but that he was also slightly resentful of how much of his attention it consumed. Gandalf knew that only a Ring of Power had the ability to preserve its bearer from the effects of time. Er go, Bilbo's Ring must be a Ring of Power, not just one of the "lesser" rings that the Elves made when they were practicing to make the Rings of Power. From that point on, it was a simple process of elimination to determine which Ring it was likely to be. Nine given Men, Seven given to the seven Dwarf Clans, Three kept by the Elves, and the One that Sauron forged in secret to dominate all others. Which could it be? Definitely not any of the three Elven rings, because those are all accounted for. Gandalf already knew that Elrond, Galadriel, and himself wore those. Definitely not any of the Nine given to Men, because the nine Men who were first given those rings are *also* still alive and still wearing those rings as the Nine Ringwraiths. Of the Seven rings given to the Dwarves, four were known to have been destroyed by dragonfire (This is because the Dwarves were resistant to evil, so the Rings couldn't overpower them and turn them into wraiths, as had happened with Men, or preserve them from mortality as Bilbo's ring had done for him. Instead, the Dwarven rings influenced their bearers over time to an even greater desire for wealth and treasure than they already had naturally. Wealth very often focuses on gold and large quantities of gold attract dragons. The reason Moria fell to the balrog rather than attracting yet another dragon was because the wealth of Moria lay in mithril rather than gold.). That narrowed the pool of possibilities to either one of the three surviving Dwarven rings or the One Ring. Meanwhile, Gandalf was busy discovering that the culprit who had corrupted The Greenwood into Mirkwood was Sauron, regaining strength and looking to collect all of the Rings of Power, especially his One. Naturally, this put Bilbo in danger, so Gandalf went searching for the only other person who knew Bilbo had a Ring of Power: Gollum. This would allow him to keep Sauron from learning Bilbo's story (although he was too late to prevent this), as well as allow Gandalf to trace where Gollum got the Ring from (which led him to the Gladden Fields, where Isildur died) to ascertain which ring it might be. At this point, I have to deviate from what can be gleaned from the films and mention a piece of evidence that PJ just never brought up for some reason (although, he might have shown it visually in the prologue and I just haven't taken the time to look close and see): from the moment Gandalf realized Bilbo's ring must be a Ring of Power, he already knew which ring it had to be. Of the 9, the 7, and the 3, every single Ring of Power was set with an appropriate gemstone to correspond with its particular properties. Only Sauron's Ruling Ring was a plain gold band with no gemstone. However, this put Bilbo in so much danger that Gandalf was actually trying to be in denial for a while and collecting as much evidence as he could. Isildur's suggestion that the Ring missed the heat of Sauron's hand and that fire might recall the lettering on it was just the final confirming test of a truth Gandalf dreaded to admit to himself. Once he had done so, Bilbo's plan to leave the Ring behind when he retired to Rivendell and the fact that he actually did so gave Gandalf hope that the Ring might not entirely override a peaceful will.

Including Sauron's One Ring, there are 20 Rings of Power in all: Sauron's Ring 9 Rings for Men 7 Rings for Dwarves 3 Rings for Elves Gandalf knows Bilbo has a magic ring, but never suspected it to be the One Ring. In fact, he probably didn't even think it could be a Ring of Power - until Bilbo refers to it as "my precious." That's when he convinces Bilbo to give up the Ring, gives it to Frodo, and leaves the Shire to confirm his suspicions. 10:10 No. The ring's verses only demonstrate it is Sauron's ring. Gandalf knows that Sauron is back because of the events that happen parallel to The Hobbit story, when he visited Dol Guldur (in Mirkwood) and discovered Thrain (Thorin's father) is trapped there, he also discovers that Nigromante is really Sauron. The White Council expelled Sauron out of Mirkwood, but he reappeared 10 years later in Mordor. And no. Gandalf didn't know, or even suspected, Frodo had the One Ring. He thought he could have one of the many lesser rings made by the elves.

Arwen is, like her father, half-elven. According to Tolkien lore, she has the choice between human mortality (although probably long-lived, as her long-dead uncle, Elros, lived up to 500 years) and elven immortality.

Let me share about Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was 500 years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh • By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. And as a microcosm they resembled the coalition of all the races of middle earth uniting under one banner which is another reason it sort of metaphysically set into motion the world uniting at the macrocosm ! Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother) The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤

There was a great episode of Pints with Aquanis on YT (w/Ben Reinhard) where they talk about LoTR and it’s parallels with a theistic worldview. Also, it was not initially influenced by Tolkien’s Christian faith but eventually it was during the course of him writing it. His approach however was not the same as CS Lewis who was far too forward and literal about his use of allegory (in the Narnia series for example). Tolkien on the other hand was far more creative and allusive about it. As the trilogy progresses consider how the ring could be symbolic of sin and how Gandolf, Frodo, and Aragorn could all be understood as a collective analog for Christ.

@@ISavant I’m well aware. It would be argued that it’s a more subtle form of symbolism and allegory that wasn’t explicit or formally revealed by him. It wasn’t “in your face” and so literal and rigid like Lewis’s was. Without giving away too much, consider how Tolkien symbolized Industry and its often destructive effects on nature, the pain and perils of war (based on his own experience), the importance of human integrity and perseverance, the beauty of nature, hope, etc, etc. These are all forms of symbolism that are everywhere in the trilogy and integral to it. Additionally some of the deeper symbolism can be drawn out based on the fact that Tolkien said, “The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work”. Lastly, consider the Balrog being a kind of fallen angel and Gandolf himself being like “an incarnate angel” (according to Tolkien). The parallels are there, they’re just not overly explicit, which I’m grateful for.

It was only later that Gandalf started to grow suspicious that maybe Bilbo's ring was Sauron's One Ring which had been lost millennia before, he travelled to seek the records of Isildur's defeat of Sauron and see if the One Ring might have distinguishing markings. Gandalf had Frodo toss the ring in the fire to bring out the lettering which identified it according to Isildur.

The Shire is region in the Southwest of the subcontinent Eriador, in size about the same area as Great Britain. It was part of the lands of the North Kingdom of Arnor. It was given to the Hobbits when it had been depopulated by war and disease 400 years before Arnor fell. That's 1500 years ago by the Hobbits' reckoning. The only condition was that they keep the Great East-West Road, which ran through its Northern border, and its bridges in good repair. Hobbits are counted as Men but their lifecycle is different. They are not considered fully adult until the age of 33, the equivalent of our 21, and living to be 100 or more isn't unusual, though, like Men they are frail mentally and physically when they are elderly. Frodo shared a birthday with Bilbo and turned 33 on the day of the Party. The movies don't cover the timeline as it would have confused the audience. Alarmed by Bilbo's behavior, Gandalf spent 17 years learning about the ring and tracking how it came to be in Gollum's possession. Frodo was 50 when he left The Shire, but because he had the ring, he still seemed like a very young adult. Samwise Gamgee's family had worked as gardeners and domestics for the Baggins family for three generations and he was in his late 30s. Merry Brandybuck was 31, and nearly grown. Pippin Took was 29 and still an adolescent when he and Merry discovered their friend and cousin Frodo was starting a dangerous mission with only Sam for company. They are from the most prominent families of The Shire.

Exactly. (The normal versions were supposed to be what we now know as the extended version. It wasn’t meant to be cut up). Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format since they wanted people to see the whole movie invites completion. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enoug to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad. Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!

Personally, I think Gandalf knew Bilbo had A ring, not THE Ring.

There are 5 wizards, or "Maiar" - they're kind of like the equivalent of what angels are to Christians

Make sure you watch the extended versions of the two towers and return of the king. If you watch the theatre versions you miss a lot. That wasnt an eagle. that was Gwaihir, Lord of the Great Eagles and a very important person in the books. If you listen carefully you can hear Gandalf whisper his name to the moth.

congrats on the new subs for posting a LOTR reaction. i live in NZ, where this was filmed. I actually live about 45 minutes away from the shire (which still exists, you can even go have second breakfast or an evening banquet there), and absolutely no CGI was used, that's just what this country looks like 😎

One of me favorites, 14 hours long if you watch all 3 on extended. Ps tell dad to not have work logos . Crazy people online. I'm glad to see your dad works in the cyber security field.

Of course you are very correct about crazy people online. As you can imagine I had to the abandoned hope of online anonymity many years ago with what I do. But I imagine many of friends are considered to be “online crazies”. Of course there is “crazy” then there is “crazy” If you are into Infosec you might enjoy this series I’m starting where I interview the OGs of Infosec and the hacking tools that inspired today’s tools. m.youtube.com/@markbaggett

I love the father/daughter dynamic you’ve got going here! But Dad, seriously… stop pausing the movie to interject unnecessary things. Perhaps if something is confusing or missed, then pause for a quick explanation. But let her react naturally and organically without spoilers and/or personal pet theories. Looking forward to the rest!
