Badd Medicine here and its Fall of the House of Usher reaction time
Roderick Usher, the corrupt CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, has lost all six of his children-heir Frederick, entrepreneur Tamerlane, surgeon Victorine, gaming mogul Leo, PR head Camille, and socialite Perry-in a span of two weeks. He attends the funeral of his oldest three children (the last ones to die), accompanied by his sister and Fortunato COO Madeline, his wife Juno, his granddaughter Lenore, and his enforcer Arthur Pym. Roderick sees eerie apparitions and collapses, muttering, "It's time," upon sighting a raven. He invites his nemesis, assistant US Attorney C. Auguste Dupin, to his childhood home to confess his crimes and reveal the causes of the deaths of his children. Roderick recounts that in 1962, Roderick and Madeline's mother, Eliza, died but unexpectedly resurrected and killed her abusive former employer, Fortunato CEO William Longfellow, whom Roderick believed to be his and Madeline's biological father. Two weeks before the funeral, Roderick and Madeline assemble the children at a family dinner to uncover an informant amongst them who is working with Dupin. In the present, Roderick takes responsibility for their deaths and recounts a fateful encounter with a woman named Verna, who foretold a life-altering change at a New Year's party in 1980.

The Poe references are peppered HEAVILY in each scene and reference. It’s more like all of his works as a single beast. Fall of the house of Usher is a short story without a lot of meat just more of a mood - it’s like a frame to hang all this other stuff on. I think Verna is the raven (name scramble) but even that is all guesswork right now. I also LOVE that the family are built on big pharm specifically some kind of patented opioid. Edgar Allen Poe only lived to 40 almost 200 years ago and his life and work are dripping with opium addiction. So much going on here.

If you didn't know, the Usher family and their company Fortunato is based on the real life Sackler family and their company Purdue pharma. I followed their case a few years ago. The show really parallels what happened in the real world even to the last episode.

Some of the character names are also references to Poe's real life. In the first episode there's Boss Longfellow, an obvious reference to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but there's also John Neal (the judge) and Rufus Griswold (a character who I dont remember if he was mentioned this episode but shows up later), and all three were Poe's literary contemporaries and in some cases rivals. And Eliza Usher, the mother, bears the same first name as Poe's mother, who died when he was a toddler.

I definitely recognized some of the lines but I really don't know his work that well. Are revenge and regret some of his major themes?
@Lii170

@@ct6852I'd say regret definitely appears often. Especially in some of his most melancholic works.
Young Madeline is played by Lulu Wilson.....she was young Shirley in The Haunting of Hill House. Tamerlane Usher's husband "Bill" is "Sturge" from Midnight Mass. Frederick's wife, Morella, is "Dolly" from Midnight Mass.

I don't know about that. I found it interesting enough to watch until the end but I didn't love it and I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. I mean as a Poe adaptation, as its own thing it would have been different. For me.

Yeah, even details of decor, character naming etc are references to different Poe stories and poems. Tamerleine's episode, for instance, manages to be even better than both "Tamerlaine" and "William Wilson", the short stories Flannagan is adapting with her life and death.

I love thinking about 10 year old Henry Thomas in ET showing the alien his Star Wars toys “greedo and hammerhead and Lando” he even has them fight. Now he’s on screen 40 years later with Luke freaking Skywalker.
The bright lights in the set probably made it harder for them to notice the mother behind Dupin. But dang I was like "NOOOOO They didn't see her"
Madeline Usher is played by Mary McDonnell (who is definitely known for more than Independence Day 😜lol). She is a twice Oscar nominated actress most known for her roles in Dances with Wolves and TV's Battlestar Galactica. She is fantastic and a great addition to Mike Flanagan's acting troop. I binged the whole series and loved it. Hill House is still my number one. Bly Manor is number 4. I will need to rewatch to see if this or Midnight Mass ends up in my number 2 position. Love Mike Flanagan so much! Great reaction. Thanks!

The Fall of the House of Usher is an Edgar Allan Poe fan's dream. Not only are each Usher siblings stories an inspiration of famous Edgar Allan Poe stories but the whole series are packed full of Poe easter eggs. Even down to names of real life people who were actual real life rivals and enemies of Edgar Allan Poe back when he was alive. ✒️📜📚💀🕯👻🐈⬛🖤
I’ve loved most of Flanagan’s work, and I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by Poe, so I was super-excited for this series. I binged it over two nights. And I loved it! I still have The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass as my #1A and #1B. But this is just right behind those. I loved how Flanagan weaved in so many elements from Poe’s various works. As per usual, the whole cast was great, but Carla Gugino was *amazing*.

I was really hoping you guys would react to this! My recommendation: turn the lights down in the studio going forward. Roderick's mother actually *was* standing behind Dupan; however, any ambient glare on the screen would cause the viewer to miss it because the background is so dark. Once again, Flanagan hooks everyone in the first episode. I can't imagine the agony you will endure, not being able to binge-watch in a single day. Looking forward to watching this along with you!

I watched the whole show in a day so I'm delighted you're reacting to it!
The actress who plays Madeline Usher also played Stands With A Fist in Dances With Wolves. I'd completely forgotten she was the First Lady in Independence Day until The Answer recognized her.
I'm going to power through this show and rewatch it with you guys cant wait! Mike Flanagan never disappoints!
Just finished the series last night. It's pretty fantastic. Definitely has all the elements of the other Flannagan series, with maybe a harder, more unforgiving edge. The next episode in particular is BRUTAL. Yikes. Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood really shine in this one. All the actors are great...but those two are the standouts, I think. And yeah there's some fantastic monologues that are pretty impressive. Have to wonder how many takes it took to deliver all those lines so perfectly in one shot. You're in for a ride! Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
This was a great series...Carla Gugino was fabulous as was the rest of the cast. Well done! A new twist on classic Poe.
Truly enjoyed this! There are actually a few “nods” to Gerald's Game throughout this show. It would be fun to be on the lookout for those Easter eggs as you watch! It makes sense since Mike Flanagan directed and wrote the screen play (with Jeff Howard) for Gerald’s Game.

I recognize the Madeline Usher actress (Mary McDonnell) and Roderick's boss (Griswold), Michael Edward Trucco, both from Battlestar Galactica. That's a great show, too, btw
You're in for a treat guys! While my personal favourite is still Midnight Mass - I think because it really is no ones voice but Flanagan's - The Fall of the House of Usher is another piece of art and I think I'll have to let it settle for a bit and then rewatch it to appreciate the full spectrum of it. It's got some exquisite dialogue, wonderful use of colour, and is just plain fun sometimes! Looking forward to your thoughts on it!
I don't know if you all have watched The Midnight Club but a lot of the younger actors in The Fall of the House of Usher are from The Midnight Club.
There are actually at least three different Battlestar Galactica actors in this show!! I wonder if Mike Flanagan is a fan
the flanaverse is too good
I agree, I'm also getting "sell your soul / deal with the devil" vibes from this. Well, we've gone from time-traveling ghosts, to possessive ghosts, to vampires cosplaying as angels, so I have no doubt that whatever I think this is, there's probably a twist that will prove me wrong and I'm looking forward to it!
