Badd Medicine here and its Fall of the House of Usher reaction time
Roderick Usher, the corrupt CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, has lost all six of his children-heir Frederick, entrepreneur Tamerlane, surgeon Victorine, gaming mogul Leo, PR head Camille, and socialite Perry-in a span of two weeks. He attends the funeral of his oldest three children (the last ones to die), accompanied by his sister and Fortunato COO Madeline, his wife Juno, his granddaughter Lenore, and his enforcer Arthur Pym. Roderick sees eerie apparitions and collapses, muttering, "It's time," upon sighting a raven. He invites his nemesis, assistant US Attorney C. Auguste Dupin, to his childhood home to confess his crimes and reveal the causes of the deaths of his children. Roderick recounts that in 1962, Roderick and Madeline's mother, Eliza, died but unexpectedly resurrected and killed her abusive former employer, Fortunato CEO William Longfellow, whom Roderick believed to be his and Madeline's biological father. Two weeks before the funeral, Roderick and Madeline assemble the children at a family dinner to uncover an informant amongst them who is working with Dupin. In the present, Roderick takes responsibility for their deaths and recounts a fateful encounter with a woman named Verna, who foretold a life-altering change at a New Year's party in 1980.

The Poe references are peppered HEAVILY in each scene and reference. It’s more like all of his works as a single beast. Fall of the house of Usher is a short story without a lot of meat just more of a mood - it’s like a frame to hang all this other stuff on. I think Verna is the raven (name scramble) but even that is all guesswork right now. I also LOVE that the family are built on big pharm specifically some kind of patented opioid. Edgar Allen Poe only lived to 40 almost 200 years ago and his life and work are dripping with opium addiction. So much going on here.

If you didn't know, the Usher family and their company Fortunato is based on the real life Sackler family and their company Purdue pharma. I followed their case a few years ago. The show really parallels what happened in the real world even to the last episode.

Some of the character names are also references to Poe's real life. In the first episode there's Boss Longfellow, an obvious reference to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but there's also John Neal (the judge) and Rufus Griswold (a character who I dont remember if he was mentioned this episode but shows up later), and all three were Poe's literary contemporaries and in some cases rivals. And Eliza Usher, the mother, bears the same first name as Poe's mother, who died when he was a toddler.

Yeah, even details of decor, character naming etc are references to different Poe stories and poems. Tamerleine's episode, for instance, manages to be even better than both "Tamerlaine" and "William Wilson", the short stories Flannagan is adapting with her life and death.

Madeline Usher is played by Mary McDonnell (who is definitely known for more than Independence Day 😜lol). She is a twice Oscar nominated actress most known for her roles in Dances with Wolves and TV's Battlestar Galactica. She is fantastic and a great addition to Mike Flanagan's acting troop. I binged the whole series and loved it. Hill House is still my number one. Bly Manor is number 4. I will need to rewatch to see if this or Midnight Mass ends up in my number 2 position. I’ve loved most of Flanagan’s work, and I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by Poe, so I was super-excited for this series. I binged it over two nights. And I loved it! I still have The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass as my #1A and #1B. But this is just right behind those. I loved how Flanagan weaved in so many elements from Poe’s various works. As per usual, the whole cast was great, but Carla Gugino was *amazing*.

Roderick's mother actually *was* standing behind Dupan; however, any ambient glare on the screen would cause the viewer to miss it because the background is so dark. Once again, Flanagan hooks everyone in the first episode. I can't imagine the agony you will endure, not being able to binge-watch in a single day. Looking forward to watching this along with you!

The next episode in particular is BRUTAL. Yikes. Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood really shine in this one. All the actors are great...but those two are the standouts, I think. But how much would that interfere with our being able to see their expressions? Which as they said is sometimes the only way they can react (so they don't talk over dialogue).

@@aysinati6632 I honestly think Midnight Mass is his best work, personally. The themes are just so well executed, they permeate through every scene and every character and it's clear how deeply deeply personal it all is to Mike. I loved Hill House, it's one of my favourite shows of all time, but Midnight Mass I can rewatch any day and I can be damn sure it'll make me bawl

Maybe your lights are too bright and I don't think you guys saw it but the mother is really standing behind Dupin at 10:08 while he is talking and then she walks away at 10:24. Also every episode of the series is based on a different short story or poem by Edgar Allan Poe, and character names, etc. are also heavily based on Edgar Allan Poe's life and rivals as well.
