Everything in this show is BALLS DEEP in Edgar Allen Poe stories. All the kids are characters from his short stories the names of the episodes are lifted from them and informs you of how they're going to die if you know the stories. this is the most expertly crafted show I've ever seen.

Except for Gold-bug. For some reason they titled the episode Gold-bug but the story was actually based on a mix of Tamerleine and William Wilson. I wonder why they did this only for that episode...

I watched the first episode and then quit. Tries to tick too many diversity boxes, too edgy, had zero finesse and gave me no incentive to watch episode 2. It was like watching a woke parody of Succession with some ham fisted Flanagan elements thrown in. Nowhere near as good as Midnight Mass or The Haunting of Hill House.

Weirdly enough, in spite of the more extreme modernization and sexification, House of Usher is, by far and wide, order of magnitudes more faithful to Poe's original collection of short stories than Hill House or Bly Manor ever were to their books. It paid to remember the short stories while watching.

I think I would describe this series as a love letter to Poe. Not only does it involve some of his characters (Dupin, the Ushers) but it references so many more (Fortunato, Prospero, Lenore, Annabelle Lee, The Raven) and his stories (The Raven, The Gold Bug, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, The Mask of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher) and quote so much of his poetry, but even a lot of the themes that it eventually deals with (betrayal, loss, insanity, the inability to trust oneself or one's reality, trying to maintain normalcy while inside you're falling apart) become prominent in later episodes. The others feel like someone adapting a story to make a hit, this feels like someone paying homage to his literary inspiration.

Edgar Allan Poe was my first “adult author.” I’m 47 now, and stories have been giving me the chills since I was 12 years old. While there were many classic adaptations of his stories (like the ones with Vincent Price), in the modern era they are virtually nonexistent. I love what Flanagan has done here: he maintains the heart, soul, dread and themes of Poe; it’s clearly a love letter to his work, but he freshens it up and puts such a great spin on the tales. And his stable of actors have never been better. Carla Gugino and Mark Hamill are certainly highlights.

Ha, likewise! My mom told me as a kid how she used to read the stories and they would scare her, so f course I had to read them too. I was expecting devils, zombies, gruesome ghoulies, but instead I got something even scarier: the evil of an intrusive thought, the weight of depression, the fear of theetering at the edge of madness. I loved it. It's not necessary, but if you have read the stories, this shoe shines all the more because of how good it is about capturing their spirit.

Episode titles, character names. It's great to see how creative it is. Being so invested in the previous works of the Flanaverse I felt what seemed to be a wave of nostalgia from a lot of my favorite actors returning for this show. It kept me guessing how each episode would end and the message the show gives is clear as day but executed perfectly.

"The names are very fancy", Well all of the names are characters from Poe's stories or poems. Roderick and Madeleine Usher from 'The Fall of the House of Usher', Arthur Pym from the novel 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket', C.Auguste Dupin is the first detective in fiction and appears in several stories, Frederick is from 'Metzengerstein: A Tale in Imitation of the German' Tamerlane was a real Turco-Mongolian conqueror Poe wrote a poem about, Victorine Lafourcade appears in 'The Premature Burial', Prince Prospero is from the 'Mask of the Read Death', Camille l'Espanaye is from 'The Murders on the Rue Morgue', Annabel Lee and The Raven (which I'm pretty sure is also Verna in annagram form) are both famous poems, Lenore is a poem but also appears in 'The Raven', Pluto the cat from 'The Black Cat', Napoleon I believe is from 'The Spectacles' and Alessandra from 'Politian' but I could be wrong, Morelle from 'Morella' a horror story, William Wilson another poem. Other interesting names are: Amontillado wine from 'The Cask of Amontillado' Ligodon I think it's inspired by 'Ligeia', Eliza was the name of Poe's mother and the middle name of his wife. Rufus Wilmort Griswold and also Longfellow were both rivals of Poe. And I probaby forgot stuff. Editing now to add 'The Gold- Bug', ironically the last one I read and I forgot about it.

I watched this movie on the first day and literally planned my day around getting up early to binge watch it all on the first day. I can’t wait to see you learn more about all of them but especially the women who from day one just seem more sassy and planned Edit: also I like all the Flanagan stuff I’ve seen so far (everything but Oculus and Absentia) so I’m soo looking forward to everything he does in the future because this one is top 3 Flanaverse for me.😊

Flannigan is the goat of horror shows. I know it's really early to say but he has always gotten me emotionally invested in his shows. I never would have thought a horror show would bring me to tears. Just like hillhouse, bly manor and midnight mass. Hes doing something completely different and I want more.

@@mandelbot5318 True, but I was going to wait until a reaction to an episode that actually showed him to point that out. I've seen on occasion reactors that consider knowing that a particular actor will show up to be spoilers, so I try avoiding that.

Never finished Midnight Mass, still have to find the right mood to be in. So far Bly Manor was my favorite of these, loved Dani and Jamie so much, with this coming out, both shows share first place cause they're so very different yet amazing in their own right. The way Flanagan "queered it up" even more is amazing :D

I love how Mr. Flanagan was able to weave Mr. Poe's best and not-so-known works in this show. And even if the viewer is not familiar with the literature.. it's done in such a way that those who had not read a single Edgar Allan Poe work has something to love (or be spooked) about it. :-) Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

I love this show so much and have watched all of it in two days so seeing your reaction to it now was amazing and grate reaction as always Can't wait to see you reacting to the others because they just get more and more intense as time goes on. Young Rodrick is the actor of Riley from Midnight Mass and he was also the doctor in Mike's show that he did before this one called The Midnight Club which also stars the actress of Rodrick's young wife and Camille's female assistant as well. The actor of Leo is the one that plays the one that Hannah liked in Bly Mannor and also the cop in Midnight Mass, the actress of the granddaughter is the one that played Abra the special girl that Danny helped in the Doctor Sleep movie, Then there is the actress of Hannah herself of course and Fredrick is the actor of the father in Haunting of hill house and he has been in all the others too. The actress of the woman they are scared of is of course the oen that played the mother in Haunting of Hill house and the one telling the story in Bly Mannor as well. The actress of Rodrick and Madaline's mother is the one that played the maid in Hill house and also the doctor in Midnight Mass and the actor of the one she killed was the one that in Haunting of hill house played her husband and also the guy that shot the girl in Midnight Mass. It's interesting to see how much he uses the same actors over again and mixes them up with new ones as well oh and Carl Lumbly the one that plays the lawyer here played the ghost that Danny talks to in Doctor Sleep.

It's funny that you mentioned how good the casting was for the younger versions of the characters. Because this is like my third channel for reaction videos to this that I'm watching. And obviously I watched the show. And until you mentioned that I totally forgot that the younger versions were different actors different people. I think the story just had me so absorbed and the casting was so good just completely went over my head that they're different actors I was like no those are the same people.

After you watch the series, go back and try to guess which actors in some of the smaller part were in other Flanagan shows. I figured out one of the actors (Annabel). She was so different than on Hill house! I ended up going over to IMDb, and looking at all the other actors. Look for the actress that plays the youngest Madelyn .
