Tbh that Alien reveal was more scary than seeing the chestburster in Alien, or even the Xenomorph, especially back in the days themovie was released. The slow build-up was going on throughout the entire first part of the movie and the fact that it was just a glance as one of the aliens walked past. Similar to when the movie shows the leg of the alien walk into the cornfield. It's very good at building suspense in a way that the classic Action-Alien movies dont.

@@Ferdawoon The first Alien movie was not an action packed film, it was a psychological horror. Also, the chestburster scene is still effective as it was back when it was released and it was not meant to be scary, it was mostly done for shock value and to make you disturbed, to make you feel distraught for the characters and not knowing what to expect now which makes the entire movie from that point more suspenseful and edge of your seat, which in that case it done it job well. Two different films, hard to compare them at all.

@@sirhoopalot1The studio wanted aliens. Shyamalan left the movie opened to interpretation just like the world the characters inhabited. I think it unlikely advanced aliens would make these many mistakes. But demons or beings from a different dimensional realm that don't understand our reality could make these mistakes and be overly confident. All the signs of invasion seem rooted in human delusions given rise by telepathic phenomenon.

This movie was one of my FAVORITE theatrical experiences of my movie life. The way we all screamed in unison for all the jump scares was something else. We were all in such perfect sync during the entire thing. It was glorious. I distinctly remember during the pantry scene, when that hand came out, the ENTIRE theater legit SCREAMED, and then laughed at ourselves. When the scene was over, we all shushed each other and quieted down rapidfire fast. Gawd I love this movie so much.

The mother was psychic. Her daughter inherited that ability; Bo has dreams that come true. Bo also had a psychic 'conversation' with her mother when she was born. And the mother knew all her life what Morgan would look like. Being a 'sensitive', the mother took walks alone in the stillness of the evening. But this one night, Ray Ready somehow fell asleep at the while and ran his vehicle into the mother, pinning her to the tree. From that vantage point at the end of her life, she was able to see the coming invasion and was able to give last advice to make a good life for her family, including living through the short alien invasion. But look at the other signs, ones besides the mother being psychic and Ray falling asleep. Morgan had asthma, so his lungs were closed enough that he couldn't breathe in enough of the poison gas to kill him. Bo always had this weirdness about the taste of water, so there were glasses full all over. And Merrill always felt it was wrong not to swing his bat, giving it every bit of his strength. All this (and the love the family had for each other) allowed them to survive. Children mirror those around them. When Morgan looked to Merrill and wished he was his dad, it showed how much Morgan had lost faith in his father. When he told his father at the kitchen table he hated him, he was expressing his loss of faith in his father. Morgan blamed his father for his mother's death because ESPECIALLY being a minister, his father must have done something wrong or God would have kept his mother safe and alive. Morgan was mirroring his father. Just as Morgan was angry at his dad and blamed him for his mother's death, his father was angry at God and blamed Him for his wife's death. (Hey, Ash: SYMBOLISM!) The actor who played Ray Ready was the film's director and author, M Night Shyamalan. He always plays a small part in all his films. This film was shot in Pennsylvania; it's because he lives in Pennsylvania, and he likes being able to go home every night to be with his family. I think you watched "The Sixth Sense", another Shyamalan film. It's set and shot in Philadelphia, a city in Pennsylvania. In that film, he played the part of the ER doctor who called in a social worker to talk to Cole's mother (and assess whether she has been abusing him). A Not-Fun Fact: The first day of filming was on September 11, 2001. That's the day of the attack on New York City's Twin Towers, which fell that day. Terrorists attacked the US by hijacking four airplanes, two sent to the Twin Towsers, two sent to Washington, DC, where one crashed into the side of the Pentagon. The last plane was meant to crash into either the White House (killing the President) or the Capitol Building (killing Congress). Instead, the passengers on that plane recognized they were going to die no matter what happened, so they rushed the terrorists flying the plane and caused it to crash in an empty field...in Pennsylvania. This event traumatized every American, but especially those in New York City and, to a lesser extent, those in DC and near the Pennsylvania crash site. I am absolutely certain this set a tone that you can read from the acting in this film.

Chris Stuckmann pointed out the best symbolisms in the movie where Morgan is trying to get a good signal on top of the car. In the moment that they're all holding hands while hes on top of the car, the signal is clear. Same thing at their last dinner. They come together and embrace and the baby monitor goes off again. Its a sign, saying that they'll only be getting through this together. The big shyamalan twist is that this wasnt a horror thriller about alien invasion but about family and faith.

Another little thing I see not a lot of people pick up on, the signal through the baby monitor is strongest when they are together. They are all climbing on the car, the boy on top, the uncle holding him, the dad is holding the girl, and as soon as the uncle reaches out and grabs them, the signal is clear. Then again, later at the dinner, they all hug, and it becomes clear again

Even with the nitpick flaws you can make about the aliens, you have to give M. Night Shamalayan credit. He managed to write an original script that merged two very different kinds of movies: a paranormal thriller that interrupts a family drama that talks about loss, faith and the debate between coincidence and acts of the divine. It is about as close to blockbuster status as a faith-based movie will get in modern cinema.

I remember this film was so cool to me as a kid because it was so different than any other alien movie I had seen. Glad you guys got to see it! Also, that dinner scene is pure gold. When the dad yells, "SO ENJOY IT", then immediately breaks down crying is heartbreaking and so powerful. Such a good movie that still holds up, one of M. Night Shyamalan's best films.

Whenever they all touch the signal becomes more clear which is a metaphor for them needing to fight together. Also another great small detail is that when the dog pee’s itself the dad says he’ll call the doctor for help rather than the vet because he doesn’t want to see the vet who killed his wife in his car by accident. Loads of great little things in this film like that. Also of course the wife’s last words, the picture of the farmhouse, bo’s oddness around water leading to there being lots of water glasses around the house, the sons inhaler , the brother’s baseball history and bat are all signs that help them defeat their enemy.

Just because they can travel through space doesn't mean they can do anything they want; they're no omnipotent beings. Mor0n, even if they have the technology to phase through solid objects, doesn't mean they always have the technology carried on every individual one of them. In fact, if they're spreading due to over population, they'd be less worried about the value of individuals and probably equip them less. Believe it or not, not evey advanced tech has to have a dashboard of christmas lights and colored beams of pew pew and translocation technology. A solid wood door with a solid lock and barring can keep in a modern human just as easily as a neanderthal (a gulf of difference in tech levels), but suddenly it makes no sense in their case. Believe it or not, walls, doors, and barriers work and will continue to work for a loooooooooong time, and having vehicles that can fly in space doesn't change that fact. @@unclebounce1495 the problem with it isn't that they invaded a planet that is 70% water when it is harmful to them. As others have said, they may have been desperately seeking another planet. The problem, is that these beings are intelligent enough to be able to cross the galaxy, something that we are probably thousands of years off being able to do, and yet they aren't intelligent enough to scan the planet, understand its chemical composition, and then wear appropriate suits to shield themselves from the water. Instead they come down naked. I know, wearing any sort of protective clothing would mean they can't use their camouflage. But hell they could have attacked from the skies in their invisible ships. I do like the film, but it would have worked much better if M.Night could have managed to write them as demons, since it is about faith and the water being harmful to them could be construed as holy water. I also do agree with people's criticism of them not being able to break through a door. When Merrill faces it with the baseball bat it is towering over him and takes a hard blow to the back without being dropped. It should have no problem punching its way through a door. And even if not, they are intelligent enough to traverse the galaxy, it should have been intelligent enough to use something in the room to escape. Like I said, I do like the film, and I love that scene for the jump scare which is legitimately scary and comes out of nowhere. But it does have a couple of problems. I overlook them personally but I understand people's gripes with it.
