SHAOLIN SOCCER MOVIE REACTION | 0:00 - 26:51
SHAOLIN SOCCER MOVIE REVIEW | 26:52 - 31:09
Shaolin Soccer Movie Description:
All his life, an ordinary young man (Stephen Chow) has been treated like dirt. Still, he's never given up believing that all the world's problems could be solved with a little kung fu. So he's teaming up with a band of misfits - six friends who were kung fu masters in their youth - to form a soccer team that only he believes has a chance to win a $1 million grand prize. Together, they're going to apply their hidden talents to a whole new game -- and soccer will never be the same.
Shaolin Soccer (Chinese: 少林足球) is a 2001 Hong Kong sports comedy film directed by Stephen Chow, who also stars in the lead role. A former Shaolin monk reunites his five brothers, years after their master's death, to apply their superhuman martial arts skills to play football and bring Shaolin kung fu to the masses.

The movie has some inspiration and nods to an anime called Captain Tsubasa from the 80s that was super popular around the world. Stephen chou have always been know to have a kin of comic/cartoon logic in his movies, even before shaolin soccer or kungfu hustle. What makes his work so great is that he's able to do all the ridiculous special effect, comedy and logic in comic/cartoon/anime and make it work in live action, hes also able to balance the touching and emotional part with comedy so well. I really hope one day he gets to direct an anime adapted movie with the quality of special effect hollywood big budget movie has. I think if there were a OnePunchMan live action movie I really hope they get him to direct, even if they dont get him to direct the entire movie at least have him be a co-director or a consultant. Considering how so many martial artist actors liek jackie chan, jet li and donnie yen is now known in hollywood, its such a shame that prolific directors from hongkong has not really had a break through in adapting their directing style into hollywood movies, not that it became just another hollywood movie, but to begin with I wish at least hey could have a special effectteam that has done big budget hollywood movie. Imagine if Kungfu hustle had better special effects.

As a Chinese growing up watching Stephen Chow's comedies, here are the films Chow directed and acted that I recommand besides Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer: The God of Cookery(1996) - Classic Chow's style comedy, lower class, hilarious battle, love and Kung Fu From Beijing with Love(1994) - My personal favorite, Chow's version of James Bond King of Comedy(1999) - Kind of like an autobiography of Chow as a comedian, how he climbed from bottom to top As a one-of-a-kind comedian actor, Chow also delivered many great comedies working with other directors, and here are a few I recommand: God of Gamblers II(1990) Tricky Brains(1991) - Master of pranks Fight Back to School(1991) Sixty Million Dollar Man(1995) Some films like Royal Tramp(1992) and Flirting Scholar(1993) are rewritten from Chinese ancient stories, and also funny as hell.

Haha, I'm glad you gave this one a shot too! I remember watching this back with my whole class back in 2001 when this came out. Our class adviser treated us. He was one of the leaders of our high school soccer varsity team and during that time this movie was the hypest shit in theaters so after watching some students from our class and other sections joined the soccer varsity team. That was the case for other schools too. This movie was just that dope. No one was prepared for how ridiculous it was. It was like a breath of fresh air. So happy you've seen both Stephen Chow's most acclaimed movies. You might want to see Scott Pilgrim as well if you haven't seen that yet. It's directed by Edgar Wright. In some sense it has the same-ish quirky humor and action packed ass kickery as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Cheers my man

I'm glad you appreciated this immensely without finding the slapstick or "faux special effects" lame. You have no idea how many people loved this movie when it came out! :) thank you from Hong Kong!

Stephen Chow likes to work with a lot of the same actors (Hong Kong camaraderie), and even the character tropes get recycled. Like that woman at 17:44, she's actually a cross-dressing man who often appears in Chow's movies pretending to be ladylike while doing some kind of disgustingly funny thing.

Stephen Chow recommendations - god of cookery, tricky master, king of comedy, fist of fury 1 and 2, saint of gamblers 1-3 (spinoff of chow young fat god of gamblers) but his movies based in older eras are the best like king of beggars, justice my foot and royal tramp 1 and 2

it's actually way funnier if you understand cantonese, a lot of the jokes were lost in translation like in 10:55, he told him "to not insult the shaolin martial arts anymore" instead of "you should learn shaolin instead"

As for the "this must have inspired a lot of anime" it's probably the other way around. There's a quite famous anime from the 80s called Captain Tsubasa who was about soccer and some moments in the movie resemble it quite a lot. Now, I'm don't know if Chow did saw that series, but somebody in his crew must have.

I was in China from 10 to 20 years old. When I was 12 I actually met the girl that played the love interest in this movie. Her English was terrible but she was pretty cool. Three days in the city we'd moved to and my dad got asked to play a Russian in a mini series they were shooting in the area. She played a secretary. Funny thing is, they didn't bother to tell us the name of the series. We've never seen it. 20 years later and my dad still occasionally gets recognized by Chinese people as the Russian diplomat from that one mini series. If there are any Chinese people reading this, the series is about some diplomatic talks between Russia and China that happened in Yunnan in the 50s or 60s. I don't remember what they said the talks were about or why they were in Yunnan.
