At the end of the movie when they are trying to bring Megan back, the nurse who is putting in the IV is my grandmother. She is not an actress but a real nurse who worked on movie sets. She was assigned to this movie and when they were shooting the scene they realized that none of the actors knew how to put in an IV and asked her if she would be willing to be on camera and she said yes. Whenever this airs on TV she always stops to see if her scene is playing.

There were some deleted scenes that actually made the story make more sense 1) Hill had some kind of hypnotic mental powers even when he was a normal human. He hypnotized the Dean into being suspicious of Dan and Herbert, that's why he overreacted to Dan telling him about their experiments and expelled them. This is also why he could control the dead bodies after Herbert reanimated him, the re-agent serum amplified his mental powers. 2) Herbert is as calm and unemotional as he is because HE regularly shoots himself up with the Re-Agent. It keeps him from needing sleep or food apparently, we see him start to act more like a normal person and then he goes to shoot up and goes back to his eerily calm self.

The director's other movie, Dagon (2001), is probably the most accurate portrayal of a Lovecraft story on film. Despite the occasional budget late-90s style CGI, it hit 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' bits pretty well and still has some nice practical effects in some shocking scenes. Along with the appropriate town of mutant cultists vibe.

Actually Kat, The Re-Animator came out in 1985, and Pet Sematary came out in 1989, so indeed The Re-Animator is quite the original and creative screenplay, and if anything, Pet Sematary took cues from this film for its plot and screenplay. Even the original H.P. Lovecraft short story which this movie is based on was written in 1922, whereas Stephen King's first completed draft of Pet Sematary was in 1979.

It's usually a mixture of glow stick fluid and K-Y lubricant to thicker the mixture a bit. 28:32 This might be my favorite reaction of yours. You're on it with this one! Fun fact: In the original H.P. Lovecraft story, Herbert West - Reanimator, West is blonde. But almost every modern interpretation of the character matches more closely to Combs' version of him. You also need to see From Beyond, another Jeffery Combs/Barbara Crampton/Stuart Gordon flick that dials up the crazy from HPL's original.

Fun Medical Fact: Humans are actually much stronger than we normally think. Our brains limit the amount of strength we exert all the time. Estimates are that a normal person only uses 60% of their actual strength, at most. Athletes utilize about 80% through their training. The reason our brain limits our strength is so we don't tear ligaments, muscle tissue, tendons, and break bones. Adrenaline will bypass that limit in extreme cases, which gives us "hysterical strength". Freshly dead people would probably have what would appear as super strength if that part of their brains were damaged.

Wow, I haven't seen this in a while! I didn't even realize/remember they borrowed the theme from Psycho (1960). Another fun fact/realization was the scene when Dean Halsey asks the receptionist, "Is Mr. Cain loose in this hospital?" Receptionist: "He's in the morgue I think." Dean: "I specifically told Dr. Riley to suspend him..." That portion of dialogue was used as the opening track on rapper Big Daddy Kane's "It's A Big Daddy Thing" song, which is also the title of the 1989 album. Teddy Riley was the producer on Big Daddy Kane's biggest hit "I Get The Job Done"... I didn't realize that audio portion is from this movie until now.

Jeffrey Combs is such a fantastic actor and he was perfect for this role. He acts and looks just how I imagined 0 when reading the serial novel. The only difference being that in the story he was blonde. Sure, to transfer the original into a contemporary story, they had to change a lot in the plot, but West is the same "misunderstood genius".

There are three versions that of this film: R-rated with a mind control subplot, Unrated without the subplot and more violence, Combined that has everything from the other two.

I've heard a story that David Gale's wife decided to visit him on set during the filming of Re-Animator. However it was the day they were shooting his disembodied head going down on Barbara Crampton, and she was a bit shocked. Great choice for reaction! One of my absolute favorites for its balance of horror with some great moments of levity, and the cast are all great too

Realistically, Hill wouldn't be able to talk as a severed head as he wouldn't have lungs to force air over his vocal cords. Actually, having his head chopped off like that would probably have destroyed his vocal cords. I've always wondered though, why is Hill the only reanimated subject to have his mind fully intact? If only his body hadn't been so bad at fastening straps... :)

You're gonna wanna check out Stuart Gordon's other Lovecraft adaptations: FROM BEYOND (1985) is my favorite, and there are two more RE-ANIMATOR sequels (BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR from 1989 and BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR from 2002) though Gordon didn't direct them, his long time friend and producer Brian Yuzna did. CASTLE FREAK (1996) is a loose adaptation of Lovecraft's short story, "The Outsider," and DAGON (2002) is an adaptation of Lovecraft's novella, "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." Gordon directed both of those. And finally he did an adaptation of "Dreams In The Witch-House" as a one-hour episode for the first season of the cable anthology horror series Masters Of Horror (2005-2007).
