this is in my opinion one of the best horror movies in the last 10 years. the setting is good, the characters are actual characters, the themes of guilt, loss and trauma and dealing with them, and my god the monster design is amazing and the lore of the creature is so cool.

The Ritual!! One of my favorite! I'm just a sucker for anything with scandinavian lore and I absolutely love the creature design of the jötunn in this - it's just this huge skeletal elk/moose with 2 human torsos forming the head, it's wild! In Norse mythology, jötunn, or giants, were humanoid creatures that represented the primordial forces of nature (chaos and brutality) and were capable of metamorphism and illusions. They were kept out of Midgard, the land of men, by huge mountains and dense forests. That sounds like the domain of this jötunn in this movie. In the end, it couldn't keep Luc within its kingdom's boundaries as Luc had freed himself from his guilt (and probably also because of the loss of all its followers making it weaker), and therefore had no hold over him any longer. But I like how even if the jötunn offers peace of mind and immortality, you'll still grow old, rot and become decrepit where all you can do is pray to it. That's so effed up.

"Eat a bit of food. Refuel, head on out of there." I love your practical advice to horror movie characters. They never take it. This movie is so disturbing and weird, I'm so glad you reacted to it. Rafe Spall is the lead in this movie. He's almost unrecognizable as a teen in another movie you should see - Shaun of the Dead (2004). You get so many good recommendations in the comments, and I want to throw in that ... I think you're about ready for Cabin in the Woods (2011). You've seen Evil Dead, ReAnimator, Hellraiser and most of the core horror movies - Halloween, TCM, etc. You've seen some zombie and werewolf movies. You've got demonic possession, ghosts, and some creature features under your belt. All that's left are optional - Chopping Mall (1986), The Strangers (2008) (or alt to the alt You're Next (2011) superior to The Strangers IMO), and Coma (1977) or if you feel like cheese Dr. Giggles (1992), and maybe some Ray Harryhausen atomic era monster movies like It Came from Beneath the Sea or Mysterious Island. All that and you'll get the references in Cabin in the Woods. You've already got the Ancient Ones on your side 😉 (It will make sense when you see the movie)

Yes, our hero was “marked” by Loki to become a new member of his followers (based on his guilt/regret for not helping his murdered friend). He apparently had the most guilt/remorse of all the others. It’s a great suspense tale. I love all folklore and legend based films. Thx

If I recall correctly the creature had something t do with Norse mythology and inhabits a the world between the gods and humans (the Beowulf Universe if you will). And I agree that this movie was far scarier than the Blair Witch Project. It's the constant sense of dread that permeates the film that keeps one be on edge. Not quite on edge as you Kat as you are in a class all by yourself. I also enjoy the fact that you are clearly a film aficionado noticing things such as the lighting, composition, framing etc. which most reactors are oblivious to. As you can tell I'm a fan. I’m glad you’re reacting to this, Kat! I know I’ve seen this movie a while ago but I don’t remember what happens.

Great Reactions Kat! I've never seen you so shocked at the beginning of a film! well done for getting through it! The Empty Man would be a great choice for the next film

the book is super good too. although in the book there isn't the liquor store killing, the conflict between them is more nuanced and about different life choices they all made. I definitely get why they changed it for the movie.

One of my recommendations, yes! And favorite reaction so far! Really felt you with that impactful intro, it stays with you. Your reaction to the old woman was hilarious “can I have a piece of gum? Legit LOL. But laughing at her being punched out and going back to it?! Relishing your enjoyment and thank you for joining us weirdos - those ones out there do indeed say, “Yeah, I’ll watch this one tonight.”

I love this movie so much it's one of my favorites, also one of the rare cases where the movie is better than the book, like without spoiling the book I will say the beginning of the movie with the friend who dies isn't in the book it's just the 4 of them reuniting which changes things a lot

Sooooo, just got through watching it with you. Gonna say, that was one of the freakiest movies I've seen in awhile, I was more worried for you in this one than any of the others you watched. Glad you "survived" another one. Can't wait to see what you pick next.
