I'm actually really impressed that they figured out what was going on so quick. A _shockingly_ large amount of people genuinely think this film had a happy ending, and that Dani finally found people who honestly cared about her. It says a lot about Aster's direction - he's managed to indoctrinate his _own audience_ without them even knowing.

Fun fact: Dani smiling at the end was her choosing to let everything go, and to just except the way her life is now. She is smiling like that because after everything that's happened to her, the trauma of losing her family, and then going through watching all her friends die horribly was to much. Her mind is broken, and she is expierencing the kind of joy only someone who has truly gone insane can feel.

@@MasonicMafia I am basing my comment on something the producer Lars Knudson said during an interview, when he was asked what Dani smiling at the end meant, and he said, "The euphoria Dani felt towards the end was her mind letting go, and in that moment, she was experiencing the kind of freedom only someone who is truly insane can know."
Hereditary and Midsommar are truly twin movies, and Ari has described them as such. One in daylight, one in darkness. Death of family opens the film. One cult using love, the other using force. A character who is friendly to the protagonist actually driving them into the clutches of the cult. Massive head trauma seen a third of the way through that changes the whole tone of the film. And a character crowned king and queen at the end.

Horror based on atrocious human behavior hits me harder than supernatural stories because it can and may actually occur. I think the ending of the Midsommar screenplay not only sums up the final shot perfectly, and answers some of the most pressing questions a viewer may have, but is also profoundly beautiful on its own: "She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. Idk if you noticed it - but what's really creepy about the scene where Dani's crying is the indoctrination happening there. First they surround her; so she can't see anything but them. She has nothing to ground herself back in reality, away from them, because they are all she can perceive. Then they mimic her. Then, slowly, they make it so that SHE is now mimicking them - without even realising she's doing it. It's so sneaky and clever. Also you guys have really good reactions. Subbed.
The fact that this horror movie is set in a completely sunny bright environment and still absolutely terrifying is so good. Props to the crew who made this movie.

This is one of the most mindblowing, disturbing, happiest, and most terrifying ends I have seen in a horror movie. It is genuinely crazy how many feelings you FEEL in this scene. When I first watched this ending, it made me feel so disturbed and so terrified, yet, it made me feel somewhat happy. As if I felt like I was almost going to smile with her... It's like this ending makes you into a trance and fall into the cult just like she does... As if Aster hallucinates the audience into thinking everything is okay too... Such a great way to manipulate the audience into a happy ending.

Absolutely love Ari's brand of psychological horror. Hereditary brought up some weird, deep seated childhood fears I had of my mum that I had managed to bury way down in the the depths. That scene when the mother bizarrely creeps and wakes her son up in the middle of the night to set him on fire, never felt that chilled in my life! Ari's second film, Midsommar, is a trip and has a slight nihilistic nod to one of the most bleak and hollowing films I've ever seen in "Der siebente Kontinent" by Michael Haneke.

If you read a bit of Norse mythology there are sooo many clues in this film leading up to what is going to happen. How many days and nights did Odin sacrifice himself on the world tree Yggdrasil for? 😉 What are the ages that Pelle mentions are cornerstones in their community and what do those two numbers add up to every time? What constellation is Odin associated to? What animal does that constellation ultimate take form as? So many clues. I loved watching this film for the first time because it was like picking up on all of these clues as if they were inside jokes.
Just to think about how a horror movie was completely in daylight but still worked is insane and bravo to Ari Aster guy is a genius

"Do not sit here now and tell me that they're gonna start drinking period blood." I am DYING. ☠🤣
I used to live in that part of Sweden, Hälsingland. Though not very close to Hårga. The old story is that a mysterious figure appeared there during a party and started playing music which made others dance until they died. This tale eventually turned into regular dancing events in more modern times. One of my neighbours was into that. If I remember correctly a mall also had a painting on the wall depicting dancing and typical things for the area. Midsommar events can indeed involve dancing with traditional clothes. But what's also common is a lot of drinking, someone passing out on a couch or outside, others having sex in an empty room where the party is being held etc. I once read that more children than average are born 9 months after midsommar parties😂

It's crazy how much detail went into this movie. Even down to the symbols painted on the walls, foreshadowing whats going to happen next.
I saw this great “symbolisms” thing on twitter forever ago that I’m sure Ash will appreciate; if this commune is Wonderland, then Pelle is the tornado that brought them there. Obviously his intent is not outright villainy or malice, but his intent is absolutely to recruit Dani. I think killing the others as sacrifices becomes incidental once he realizes that he has his hooks in Dani. At the table scene, when she mentions that supposedly Simon left without Connie, she tells Christian that she can imagine him abandoning her that same way (mirroring the dream she had the previous night). When Dani says this, a very hesitant but obvious smile curls itself comfortably on to Pelle’s face. That moment tells you everything you need to know lmao
