Its incredible that they made a horror movie with chef and food, but without cannibalism

Yeah I assumed that was 100% happening in this movie. Honestly was super bored waiting for the crazy "cannibal" death scene or at least some crazy deaths. Personally I thought the movie was mostly boring and dumb. And the final death scene SPOILERS: S'mores was laughably stupid 5/10

Speaking of cannibalism, a good movie is "Green Inferno". That was horrific. Bad acting but the gruesome scenes were what I wanted to see.

I also watched a former cook's reaction to the Menu and she analysed the dishes and how they symbolised the different themes. Like that nasty ass dungeness crab with umeboshi stuff that only the women got to eat, she explained how all the ingredients were like foundational parts of cooking or bottom trawlers, seen as cheap or dirty, but they were important and taken for granted in the culinary world - just like the women at the table. I'm paraphrasing and I'm sure that wasn't exactly accurate, but it made me appreciate the movie much more.

This is it, this is the point of the film. The movies represents all art and how critics and the “content” generators cheating out for a paycheck instead of trying to make art, the wannabe critics who criticize and judge others but can’t do the art themselves and all the business that surrounds it are what ruins art. The way you guys watch movies and truly appreciate them is the same as ordering and enjoying that cheeseburger

One of the things I love about this, is that the film never goes the obvious route, such as cannibalism. It's a very smart movie.

Plus, each guest ruined their own passions too, an actor who takes a bad role & doesn't care, the businessmen who cheated in business dealings, the man who steps out on his wife, the food critics who look for the imperfections rather than enjoy eating etc. They were all pretenders who took the joy from this world. Amazing movie!!! Thanks Ash & Hannah!!! ❤️😃🎬🍿🥤👏

I think when the Chef said “Why didn’t you all try to fight back harder? You probably could’ve escaped if you had.” Was a commentary on how “Rich” people never have to fight for anything not even their own lives. Everything has been handed to them and they never had to work for anything. So they don’t understand what it means to fight for something because they never had to. Everything has been given to them on a silver spoon.

I love that Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) is the "final girl" who survives, not simply because she "outsmarts" the killer, but more because she figures out what Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) really wants (to feel the joy of cooking a simple meal for an appreciative customer) and then gives that to him. She is, after all, in a profession that's all about giving people what they secretly want and because of her giving that gift, Chef is willing to play along and let her go as a way of thanking her. Also, there's something really sinister about Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) showing up to the dinner knowing people would die, but still thinking he was the exception out of everyone, but it's also cathartic knowing Margot was the real standout.

@@VG-fk6nkI presume @Cadinho93 meant that Tyler considered himself an “exception” because he thought he was invited (and dying) as a member of the *enlightened* “food service group,” not the snobby, ungrateful “customers.” (IMHO) Ultimately, the fact that Tyler is willing to intentionally sacrifice another human being -as opposed to the others, who Chef sees as destroying lives through negligence- makes him the most despicable guest of all (hence why he’s compelled to end his own life before the end of the meal he was willing to die for

the fact that margot paid in cash, when the chef was used to receive credit cards, probably reminded him of when he was younger too

Ralph fiennes was so good in this movie it's almost unbelievable. What a smartly written and brilliant film.

Based on the title alone my mind immediately thinks "cannibalism, indy horror flick". Probably based on that old Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man". I think the title is actually an intentional fakeout. It is a horror in a way but not how you're guessing it's going to go. Which is clever, I approve.

One thing people miss is Slowiks house It's an exact replica of the restusrant to symbolize how Slowik has no life or focus outside his art and legacy When Erin is looking about his office for the radio, she sees a photo of Slowiks wife and son whose implied to have divorced/left him most likely because he put work ahead of family Essentially you see that Slowiks whole life has been pushed towards cooking, he has nothing else but his restaurant to show for his lifes work No friends, no family, nothing of roots or any mark other than his sucess Which explaons why he would view losing love for his art and passion as a reason to die and kill He has nothing else, especially nothing that matters So to him losing the passion for cooking is essentially death, so he's ready to die for his ego.

This reminds me of that quote by the famous dancer Martha Graham: "a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” This is essentially how all passionate artists feel about their respective crafts. The death of their passion or the inability to continue their craft for whatever reason is more painful than actual death.

@@janetuss6496 exactly, but it also shows that Slowiks choices has led to this outcome His strive for success and perfection pushed away or lost him all meaningful relationships and support structures he could have fallen back on when his passion died... But he had no one, he made no time or effort for them,.so in his moment of need they are not there If he had had something to fall back on, he may not have chosen to murder others and kill himself.

She made him remember the simple, good old days, cooking simple food for simple, regular people with regular conversation. No pretentious phrasing on reviews, no complicated terms. Only genuine reactions. "Cheeseburger. Medium. Wrinkled fries. How much? Can I get the rest to go?" Actual enjoyable food.

I loved this movie from a chef perspective,we miss holidays, family events , having a life outside of work , burns,cuts , heat exhaustion,high stress levels just to make food for people we'll never meet spending time with their family. A lot of people dont really think about who makes their food or what we go through and just leave shitty reviews on the slightest whim

That one final smile of chef Slowik was so genuine. I was a worker in kitchen industry before, to feel the joy of cooking again is such a blessing caming from God himself. We worked so hard to make the customer smiles, and some of us have those passion taken away by the fame, the money, and so on. The burger reconnect Slowik with his passion even for a short moment, it's spark his soul once more, one true happy smile for the last time. As Slowik hear, see, and feel the happiness from the customer again he decided to let our protagonist go. Knowing well that she wasn't supposed to be here in the first place, and she really make him smile. It's also a reflection of her job, make people feel good and smile.

I was a server throughout college, and you just made me realize - the chefs never got to see the customers smile. I got to see it all the time, but the only time our chef or cooks ever got feedback from customers is if something got sent back. The closest they came is the compliments we passed along, but that's not the same. Awww, I wish I could go back and hug our chefs and cooks. It wasn't this kind of fine-dining, but it was slightly upscale and the food they made was amazing. No wonder Slowik and his whole team went mad.

And the clap was symbolism: who is the boss, who commands. The chef is in the kitchen, but the guest is at the table. In the end, the girl took it back, so he had to obey.

Immediately calling Tyler out as a complete asshole for the cigarette thing is just perfection

I've study and worked in gastronomy. There's tons of fan service in this movie for those who have been in the food industry (mostly high end). I've drawn lines of olive oil on a plate with a syringe and I've plated garnishes with tweezers. I've said "yes chef!" more time than I can count. Cooking is a discipline that has not evolved as much as the other arts. The military origins of a kitchen are still present. The staff is called a briguade, the line of oven is called the line of fire, the set of casseroles is called a batterie. Great movie. I don't like horror but I loved this one.

I actually love the fact that no one tried to escape at the end and just accepted their fate. It's a like a commentary on how the cultish discourse can influence anyone. In this case, even the guests themselves. At that moment, they believe that they deserve what's coming. Pretty chilling.

I actually thought all the guests accepted their fates because just like the chefs, they too had lost passion in their respective circumstances and felt they were better off dead. Margot was the only one who still enjoyed her work.

​​​@@Mangoliteyou still could jump into the water and either swim or at least try to hide from staff. With everyone destined to die there, you could easily go back when fire would be over. Probably rescued by authorities. Słowik says that they could have escaped, if they tried hard enough. But that was the issue - they as rich people, never had to try hard for anything, so they didn't fight enough in the end. And there was still the boat Margot escaped with (which would probably be left out there, even without her machinations, because Dale likely would also like to be part of the last dish). And if not - guests were allowed to have phones. They weren't allowed to use them, but they never were searched. So you likely could call authorities, if you got lucky with the signal. And even if that wasn't the case - explosion and fire weren't big enough, to destroy the island. With extreme amounts of food in the storage (they probably were prepared to serve a lot of things - if someone asked for something like a cheeseburger), good amount of high class kitchen equipment and remaining wood and metal - you probably could make a good enough vessel. And I would actually expect that staff themselves had preplanned notice to the authorities to clean up the mess either way. They did acknowledge importance of nature and a burning wreck of restaurant wouldn't be against that idea.

Fun Fact: The Cheeseburger scene had such an effect on the cast because it was a real burger. The food seen throughout the movie was merely props and inedible. The cast got so hungry during the making of this scene that afterwards John Leguizamo ordered burgers and fries for the entire cast. I felt like that when watching the scene, immediately writing the ingredients down for a shopping list.

"At Tantalus, A Chef On The Bleeding Edge" - Tantalus is a Greek mythological figure, most famous for his punishment in Tartarus: as a result of his hubris - he would stand n water but the water would always escape his mouth before he could drink, and food would always do the same. Forever to be punished with hunger and thirst.

''My nipples just went funny!'' OMG! That may be the best reaction to anything I've ever heard! You two are the absolute best! Brilliant! Lol!

I think something we have to remember about why the people stayed at the end is that he was a master of deconstruction (the pretentious food) and he deconstructed every single one of them in some way or another. He showed them that all their lives really didn’t serve any purpose and in different ways that resonated with all of them.

The $10 was for the burger. No tips. It was a good play, as are all Margot's gambits. Due to her being in the service industry, she can read people and positioned herself outside of the room. She hadn't been ruined. Everyone else, including the kitchen, was compromised and corrupted in their passions. Margot still knew how to provide service that gets a smile out of the artist. The burger (clearly as you saw) was for him, not her. Very interesting movie. Different, anyway.

I think it is also a metaphor for how critics, rich people, overly obsessed fans, etc. ruin the art. This can be said about cinema, music, and paintings. Maybe Ralph Fiennes as an actor feels the same about modern cinema. Critics, rich managers who decide what type of movies to make, some overly obsessed fans who know nothing about the films, etc. may in some way ruin modern movies.

The security guard/police officer, who everyone thinks is there to save them, but lights the candle with his gun? He's shown earlier in the movie. As one of the staff. But the diners are so pretentious and dismissive of staff as servants, they didn't even notice him.

Great reaction, you two. I love how quickly Hannah decided this was a horror movie! I've watched a few of your reactions, and this is the one that has me subscribing. I laugh every time Ash says "SYM-bolism!" and anytime Hannah cringes or is scared of anything. Great job!

I have to much to say about this film. I was pumped up you guys reacted to this. I been a Sous/Line cook almost all my life and in my recent job i went to go see this with some co workers, and it was the most relative fun funny night watching this film.. There's so much i can relate or at least understand. There is, soooo much competition in high level fine dining.. people that are in the industry would understand how much hard work it is to move up and be seen, the scene with the young sous, and chef telling him he will never be great... man the many sous i worked with that put their heart and soul and never got the chance, man.. also loved how chef brings back a whole bowl of broken emulsification lmao me and my cook friends died.. critics suck!!.. people have no idea, how much work we put in, Most cooks really strive to be the best and give the best for such lil pay.. but we do it cause that's our home, if that makes sense.. Hannah is right its a military patriarchy. When Chef claps and the cooks respond back.. its a form of respect and trust. i can completely understand that too.. me and my coworkers started clapping and yelling back chef.. our manager was so confused lol. great break down Hannah always love how you guys analyze the film

Ralph Fiennes has been one of my favorite actors! He's such a talented actor. Check him out in Wuthering Heights. He plays Heathcliff and is phenomenal.

Chef's problem was that he had categorized her as a "taker". But she was able to prove that she wasn't. Her job as a sex worker (which she used to like doing) involves figuring out what her client needs and giving it to them. She did exactly that! If you think about it, this was kind of like a bit of a roleplay session. Roles, back-and-forth, a bit of domination tbh, and it got him to relax and to remember why he liked cooking. In that moment they were both in an equivalent exchange: he got to cook, and she got to have a "session" with him. She proves she's part of the working class and that she still has something to contribute to society, so chef lets her go :) i fucking love this movie it's so, so good. I'm so glad you guys watched it!

Ash looks like henchman #2 in every action movie of the early 90s lol

One of the deleted scenes would have shown Lillian being waterboarded with the broken emulsion by the line chefs as part of Chef Slowik's plan. This would have been a fantastic and completely unhinged payoff to the emulsion plates that kept getting delivered to Lillian because of her comment.

U guys have to watch Grand Budapest Hotel, it really shows that actor Ralph Fiennes can play in comedic and non villainous roles

Did you notice that Dale, the"rescuer" was also the guy fishing towards the start of the film when they've just arrived on the island... but he has his back to them?

Ralph Fiennes is one of my fave actors he’s so good. I was eating a burger while watching this.

Ralph Finnes was the villan in Red Dragon also. That movie is the prequel to Silence of the Lambs. He is terrifying!

This is the best reaction to The Menu I've seen so far. You guys nailed every moment and hint towards the inevitable finale. Seeing Ash cracking up when the guard was indeed into it was the best. 👏😂

Only 9 out of 10 of their guesses were not remotely close to what ended up happening.

I love this movie. I even have to confess that I am a little obsessed with it since I saw it for the first time. This is something you have to watch a few times to fully embrace it and get all the details (but watching other people's reactions and hearing their opinions and ideas about it helps a lot, too). The reaction from you two was the most genuine and most engaging one I have seen so far, especially since you really had no idea what you were in for. To clear a few things you discussed after the movie: Slovik had no thing for the rich in general. He had it out for his customers, which had to be rich to afford his food, and their indifference and ignorance about everything he served them. The food critic tearing him apart for the slightest mistakes because it made her superior; the regulars who just ate there as a status symbol and never could remember even one single dish; the business dudes who were just working for the owner and tried to be alpha males with their money, and the washed-up actor and his half-assed ambitions. Tyler however was the worst of them all - a yesman who just elevated everything Slovik did to high heavens just because he considered himself the most sophisticated foodie. My theory is that Tyler and people like him were the ones that drove Slovik to bastardize his art of cooking into this joyless, tasteless, but expensive and exclusive experience for people who were "too posh" to appreciate it. Since nobody would appreciate it, Slovik actually created the worst menu of them all as a point. He served one piece of seafood on a rock, a breadless bread plate, tortillas without condonments, and after the fourth course the male guests didn't even get any solid food anymore (except for the chicken with the passard egg). None of his guests even noticed, because they thought it was a gig for their benefit, and nobody even questioned the fact that they only got a bunch of snippits for the price of a used car (or a Rolex, like Margot said in the beginning). Margot actually was the only one who questioned it and ate almost nothing - showing that she was not one of those morons blinded by their own riches.

For more of the fantastically flexible Ralph Fiennes and more hilariously *dark* comedy, you've gotta watch "In Bruges"!!

Check out Shot Caller (2017) starring among many others Nikolaj Coster-Walday (Jamie Lannister you know) and Jon Berthal. Family man Nikolaj makes a mistake and winds up in a California state prison, and once inside it's sink or swim. His time in prison is told in flashbacks, while we follow current day Nikolaj as he at the start of the movie is released from prison, and struggles to complete a deal he can't back out from. Fantastic performances, and with a haunting score. The last movie that had me this gripped was Sicario (2015), and that's saying something.

I love this film, its just an instant classic. Went in with no expectations and prior knowledge and absolutely got destroyed watching it

This was probably the biggest surprise movie the other year. I remember the previews making this look like some weird, try-hard horror movie. I 100% expected it to be about cannibalism because it just felt so obvious. I also expected it to be the sort of movie where diners start getting killed 1 by 1 because it also just felt obvious. The result we wound up with was so much better and well thought out. It was done in such a clever way and I enjoyed the hell out of this. I've seen it a handful of times already and I just think it's a damn solid movie. It's not a horror movie, but it's not 100% a comedy either (even though it's sprinkled in). Dark comedy I suppose is the best way to describe it.

Watched this on the plane and had no idea it was going to turn mid way through the film. One of the best film experiences going in completely blind.

When I saw the poster, I thought that it was going to be a comedy drama film about a food critic and his girlfriend tried to oust a world class chef for being a fraud, then I learned it was a dark comedy horror film.

This movie is filmed kinda like that Netflix series about famous chefs around the world called Chef's Table. Like the cinematography, lighting, and everything is very similar to Chef's Table. Check out their opening intro clips, like for volume 1 or 2.

Never thought I’d actually enjoy a film about food and cooking. Genius scripting and execution.

All the people who died knew in advance that they would die. Even the customers were warned but took it as just a way of speaking (the food is so good you'll die). Since Nicholas Hoult's character was so obsessed with the peak pretentiousness of it all, he was the only one who realized that this was meant literally. He was so committed to the exclusivity and superiority of the event, the idea of dying for it not only appealed to him but made perfect sense. At the end, all the other diners accept that this is what they came for and were paying for.

Love this film, been a chef 20 years, fully get how the chef feels & been spending this summer cooking banging burgers 😂 symbolisms

Another film with Ralph Fiennes as the bad guy that you might enjoy is "In Bruges", a dark comedy with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson

Nicholas Hoult was also in the film About A Boy when he was a child.

Now that you know they are not eating people (I thought that too...) rewatch it again. I appreciated it even more the second time I saw it. The actor was going to BS his way through a cooking/food show. His assistant (who also stole money from him) and the guy with the food critic are also enablers. All of them in some way, helped destroy the joy of cooking and had to be destroyed themselves. Margot wasn't part of the plan, and they needed a way to spare her life.

I hate myself for watching reaction videos, but you guys are more than that. You are pure entertainment and such a laugh to watch. Thank you 😊
