Hannah is so freaking movie-literate. She understands call and response, foreshadowing, set-up and payoff, and conclusion like she's been writing stories for years. And Ash is fucking funny as fuck

it would almost suck to be that on top of movies foreshadowing...I enjoy being taken on the journey, and then picking up on the hints on the second watch.
Hannah was right about Nick subconsciously wanting to stay with Amy! In the book, Nick is morbidly a little turned on by Amy’s psychotic scheming. He realizes he could never be happy with a normal woman after being in a marriage with someone who “knew” him well enough to destroy him.

In the book, Amy described their relation as this, “Nick and I fit together. I am a little too much, and he is a little too little. I am a thorn-bush, bristling from the over-attention of my parents, and he is a man of a million little fatherly stab wounds, and my thorns fit perfectly into them.”

I have to say, Hannah should probably be working for Scotland Yard, because I’ve never seen a reactor so good at guessing twists and solving mysteries in movies in reaction after reaction. And I noticed she floated that as a possibility quite early, even before the main time she guessed before the reveal

She's like my mum (and me). We notice tropes, camera movements, subtle things without really understanding what it means. Basically, when done right with directing and editing, you can def pick it up. Shitty movies who have twists out of nowhere fail in that department so that's why they have no idea. For instance, My mum was watching a show and then the next scene from the inside shot, was a wide shot of the outside of the building they were in. I instantly said, 'It's gonna explode' and it did. Mum didn't know how I knew, but subconsciously you can pick up on these little tricks. It's not totally about being smart af. Just observant! I feel like Hannah, the more she watches, is really picking up on little things that Ash isn't noticing much. It's pretty cool to watch.

Rosamund Pike’s performance is so layered and brilliantly done. You question how much of her displayed self is performance; the Amy she shows varies from person to person; her tone, her voice, everything-where does the mask end and the real face begin? Or is she only a mask over a hollow, hungry ego

The Cool Girl monologue is absolutely iconic and the screenplay was written by the author of the book! Also, Gone Girl is one of those films where every aspect in execution is excellent: acting, writing, directing, the score, cinematography.
Hannah's reaction was shocking. Like, nearly professional. She's *fantastic* in reactions but this was exceptional.
Rosamund Pike was SO good in this. Incredible performance.

One of my absolute favourites, never been so angry watching a film though!
I was on the subway reading this book when I got to the twist and literally uttered WHAT THE FUCK?! out loud. At least five women looked at me, saw the book I was reading and said Ohhhhhh, I know what part you just got to!!! The book was even crazier than the movie. SO freaking good!
You couldn't buy a 2 bedroom apartment in New York City for what their house in Missouri and his bar cost. NYC real estate is insane.
This movie perfectly represents the saying "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". 😂
She was amazing in this role. Definitely a underrated actress.
Amys Cool Girl monologue lives in my head rent free to this day.
The book explains that Nick has a habit of smiling at inopportune &/or inappropriate moments. It's just a character trait or character flaw, depending on the circumstances. But in the circumstance that it appears that something bad has happened to his wife, that character trait/flaw, makes him look extremely guilty. That woman that came up & stole a picture, told him to smile - so he did. It happened quickly, & he didn't know how to avoid it. She however had noticed him smile in the press conference, probably assumed he was guilty of the worst, & wanted to capitalize on that character flaw, to emphasize his assumed guilt. To make him look bad because of assumed guilt. I'm sure something that happens in real cases of criminal investigations & suspected crimes. Certain people decide early on that someone is guilty, & do their best to insert themselves into the situation, & try to incriminate the "suspect"even further, just by using the situation or character traits to their advantage. It's well known by now that sometimes criminal suspects, especially those who are NOT family, will insert themselves into a criminal investigation, in a vigil, or victim search, or whatever, to both flaunt their success(of the crime), & to gather information about how much information/evidence the police investigators have. This movie shows that the criminals/ suspects aren't the only ones who will insert themselves into the situation. The author, as you will see, was very clever, & knowledgeable, about people's habits & characters, as well as about criminal investigations, & forensics.

From what I remember his smiling habit wasnt described so nicely, his smiles are usually described as smarmy and slick. He wants to be liked by everyone and thought of as a good guy which is why he also lies a lot. He smiles in inappropriate moments because he doesnt know how to be honest and its his go to for making people like him, until he ends up lashing out impulsively.
@IChooseJesus9091
11 ай бұрын
@@BambiLena666 + Whatever. That sounds like interpretation to me. Also - you gotta remember much of the way he was described came from his wife, who admitted to embellishing a fake diary, & was a deeply disturbed person in her own right. HOW you described it is not what or how I remember it. But even if that IS what was described, he was innocent, & being framed for a murder that never even happened. Meanwhile she herself became a murderer. And wanting to be liked is not a crime. Cheating & lying, while they may not ethical, or spiritually moral, are not technically crimes, unless it's a legal document or under oath. And not being socially adept is not a crime either. Honestly he struck me as a little bit on the spectrum.
@BambiLena666
11 ай бұрын
@@IChooseJesus9091 Also a lot about Nick is from Nicks POV. He says himself he has a face of a trust fund jerk that you want to punch and that he smiles a lot to seem nicer and friendlier and that "it doesnt always work". He talks and thinks about wanting to be seen as a good man and his lying usually in his interactions with/thoughts of his sister. Theres tons of interactions peppered through his chapters. Like the lady that was hitting on him, even his sister keeps telling him to do better keeping distance, but he cant, he also doesnt know how to act to show concern for his wife. Until he ends up impulsively exploding on the lady in the diner and pissing her off. I never got vibes that Nick was on the spectrum, I would need to read it again, but hes too good at handling his mistress (in the book his POVs include her a lot more), and when he decides on a clear role to play for Amy and the media to get Amy to come back. Hes also seen as fairly charming by others. And yeah obviously none of these are crimes. I never said they were. Im not at all disputing the second half of your original comment, I completely agree with that. Im just adding that its wasnt just cause Nick has a random habit of smiling in inappropriate situations. Nick has a whole set of bad traits that along with Amys planning and staging made him look suspicious as all hell.

The craziest thing is that the movie was filmed in a chronicle order. So the actress trained for the first part really hard and than put the weight on. After that she got rid of the fat in two weeks for the end of the movie. Just because she already put on the muscles in the first place she was able to do that. Amazing work! And great movie!

Ash mate, you often complain that modern films aren't as good as they used to be. This is a perfect example of how they are and you just gotta know which directors and writers to follow.
Given how much you like Fincher, both The Game and Panic Room are solid films that don't get talked about much anymore. His version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is also fantastic... the guy is just an amazing filmmaker.
Amazing Amy makes Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct seem like a fairly balanced individual. Amazing (and terrifying) performance from Rosamund Pike.

Hannah--those big homes in many places in the US, especially in the midwest, are quite affordable. You don't have to be crazy rich to own one. Location is actually a big factor in the film concerning the relationship between Nick and Amy. She feels superior to him based on where they're both from-she's from NYC and he's from Missouri. She calls him "fly over" boy which is a reference to a derogatory term those who live on the coasts in say, NYC, LA, Boston, SF have for the middle of the country that they just 'fly over". Which caused him, of course to resent her.

@@TheLeftistOwl Not that it's relevant to the movie, but the book goes into more detail about how they could afford the house. This film killed any ideas I might have had about getting married.

What I always love about this movie is how they bring Amy down to size so quickly. In the world she came from with all the rich, unsuspecting people she is the alpha predator genius, but once she gets into the real world they see through her immediately and she realizes she's nothing and has to go back to where she can be an alpha predator again. The entire ending only works because of her families social status, she would never be able to manipulate people in the real world that way.

@@gigachad192 They were really good on that new Twin Peaks thing. Super weird episode.
They were perfect for each other … damage or not they both are equal
Been watching you two for about a year now. I rarely sub to channels. But you're both relatable af. And the editing in your vids is great. Dunno why I took so long, my bad. - James

Thanks for this,now i need to watch it!
You guys should watch "Pearl Harbour" with Ben Afleck. Incredible and emotional war movie!
My ex is on this level of good, this movie stresses me out!! There are narcissistic sociopaths like this girl, girls that decide to leave on their own and then decide to destroy their spouses life on her way out. Karma is a thing though, this I know. 18:53 I love the theatrics of Hannah lol you 2 keep me laughing in a rough time missing my daughters so Thank you for your efforts
Such a cold, emotionless psycho. Right up there with Rose from Get Out.
You should watch Million Dollar Baby starring Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood!
