There was an interview with the co-director, Stephanie Ma Stine, that reveals a lot about this film, including that it was conceived as a live action-animation hybrid movie in which Zhen and the Chameleon were humans, the director Mike Mitchell was given full creative control and heavily prioritized comedy over emotion. Also, the Furious Five, Shen, and Kai were all very last minute additions which is presumably why they don't speak or interact with Po at all.

I heard that news aswell, I was so mad when I heard it, they should have fired Mike Mitchell and let Stephanie take over as the director, she also wanted it to be Kfp1 and kfp2 level, he clearly just didn't want to accept that this film isn't supposed to be about comedy it has to be more emotional and deep for the story to make sense. I really hope someday they do a Ma Stine cut like how they did the Synders cut in the justice league.

⁠yeah tbh the whole new dragon warrior didn’t make sense to me for this movie. While it was a good movie in itself they really came up with a plausible but completely random plot. The villain is great, I like Aquafina’s role too, but I hate we couldn’t see the furious 5 (budget with everyone coming back but unfortunate) and that this seems like a completely random time for Po to give up being the dragon warrior. He’s still so young and hasn’t been the dragon warrior for too long at this point, I thought it would be an issue of passing down once he’s closer to Shifu’s age.

That was Mr. Beast himself who voiced as The Pig dressed up like Po during the Dragon Warrior tournament

The Chameleon can mixture the appearance of one master with the skills of another. That's why when she transforms into Po, the Chameleon can mixture with skills of another master like the bites or breathing fire or when she transforms into a chimera and can mixture all the appearances and skills into what she wants.

I'm actually glad we got to see Tai Lung come around.

It was so rushed and didn't feel right at all. Tai Lung says it was a mistake making Po the dragon warrior then 10 minutes later he says something cheesy as hell like "hmm maybe you are the dragon warrior." The ending of the movie kind of just undid a lot of Tai Lung's intelligence and wittiness that made him likable

Spoilers for anyone who wants to read: The part of the sorceress stealing Tai Lungs Chi should've happened at the beginning of the movie. Then even with it stolen, show that Tai Lung is still capable enough to escape. Then have him begrudgingly seek out Po's help to return to the spirit world. Then you have the whole movie with Po and Tai Lung being the main focus. This could have given Tai Lung some interesting scenes of him meeting everyone again, especially Shifu.

but she couldnt have taken his chi without opening the spirit realm first. To do that she needs the staff of wisdom. Which needed to be given to her, not taken.

@@horyzengm you could have a scene at the beginning of an ambush on the palace where Po and the Furious Five defend the palace. However a bunch of shenanigans could occur that leads to the staff being taken

@@Whineanddine52 Pretty sure the main reason the furious five weren't in this movie was due to them not being able to hire the previous voice actors. A full on fight would need buildup, and during that buildup theyd need dialogue. That's why they only showed up in the credits scene. Also, yeah they could have had the staff taken at the start. But remember, shifu also has to tell po to find a successor, and that whole mental battle needs to happen, it's pretty crucial. ALSO also, if we somehow did include all that, then also had Tai lung somehow escape, then ALSO had him convince Po he's good now, then ALSO have Zhen somehow make herself look good for Dragon warrior role in Po's eyes (considering she only liked him after they spent time together, and this ambush method would negate that) The movie would end up being over 2-2.5 hours. And animated movies aren't the type of thing that you want to extend for any amount of time.

@@horyzengm honestly you could redo the movie without Zhen. Make the story around Po and Tai Lung. I think Tai wouldn't want to prove that he's changed and more so just wants Po's help to get his chi back. Po would help him since he knows that if the chameleon uses the staff more then that would be bad for a whole lot of reasons. Then at the end of the movie before Tai Lung returns to the spirit world, he leaves with a better understanding of why Po was the Dragon Warrior and not him, but this time that scene has more narrative build up. The successor for the dragon warrior could have been Tigress. She has the closest connection to Po, she is present in most of the movies and she is more than capable of taking that mantle.

They should have given Tigress her own movie instead of Kung Fu Panda 4. Humble opinion.

He hasn’t been the dragon warrior for too long, does the prophecy really suggest the dragon warrior will be found after 500 years and only remain in that position for a max of like 10 years? I thought it’d be an issue of passing it down once he got to be Shifu’s age.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!! It definitely had its flaws, but it's still Kung Fu Panda

I absolutely loved this one. the part where the chameleon op absorbed the skills of the masters, lord Shen, tai lung, general Kai, really made me go “oh sh*t” in my mind. She was just consuming the skills one by one, and she was just getting more powerful by the second, genuinely felt like an cool scene for me

I just saw this in the cinema yesterday and it was just me and my dad in this one room then like 10 minutes in a couple came in so in total only 4 people were in one cinema room

The Chameleon is a vain, psychotic and greedy bastard. She not only saw the Kung Fu as a means to adquire more power instead of learning something from the martial arts itself, but also wanted to adquire the skills the easy way by shortcuts to become more stronger, including trespassing into the Spirit Realm to steal them from the dead warriors and corrupting the art of Kung Fu with sorcery and witchcraft. She also using everyone, including Zhen, to do her bidding work and allying herself with the crime bosses of Juniper City to control the city and have her share of tributes makes her an even more nasty villain. That explains why no one would want to train her in Kung Fu because she was already a person who wanted power above all things and not because of her size as the Chameleon claimed to Po.

Mr. Ping is the best.

The fact they made it clear is all advertising that Tai Lung was back, only proves that he was the main selling point of the movie. He appears for like five percent of the screentime, yet is the best part. If we don't get to have a proper ark in 5 or 6, some people actually need to be fired for failing to do the one thing they're paid for; storytelling.

it's that close to becoming my favorite of the series,it keeps battling with the second movie for that position,I really need to watch both back-to-back,but I absolutely loved it,my only small issue with it is the Chameleon's defeat,it was a bit underwhelming,but it's a overall chef's kiss for me. In fact,I really do not get the hate it receives,I even try to put myself in the shoes of those who dislike it,but I really don't see what's their problem with it,and I guess so do not the people and kids who keep going to watch it in the theatre, 'cause is doing mad good at the box office. A reason that could explain why so many fans hate it is maybe the overall vibe and visuals that are very unique and different and almost don't make it feel like a direct sequel of the trilogy,rather like a soft reboot,and,of course,the absence of the Five during most of the movie,because,we all know,fans hate change and also hate when you deprive them of iconic characters of a franchise. To me,those are actually positives,I love when a franchise is not afraid to be bold and reinvent itself,while,for the Five,I always felt like they were starting to feel superfluous already in the third movie,so I didn't miss them at all,and their absence made their surprise show-up at the end the much more impactful

Either you didn’t really do what you said you did (putting yourself in other’s shoes to see their perspective) or you just want to glaze this movie that bad. Out of the franchise, this was without a doubt, the weakest entry. Not horrible for a standalone film, can even go as far and say it was enjoyable. Heck, even as a sequel it isn’t that bad given we got Megamind 2 so the hurdle isn’t that high to begin with. We got the trilogy, why did we not get something like that for 4? This entire movie feels so rushed and is an absolute cash grab when it could have been something more. Villain was lackluster even when she had the potential to become the best villain. Tai lung was nostalgia bait and could have been a really good redemption film, and Po, for some reason, feels like he didn’t grow any wiser (same issue I have with 3 to be honest) among many reasons. Not saying you should dislike this film but you have to admit it’s soulless. As another fan of the KFP franchise, we could have seen the best movie yet. The villain was there, stakes could have been high (you don’t know who to trust), Tai Lung being a fan-favorite could’ve been redeemed, all the elements actually lined up. It just didn’t happen. Disappointing really. It’s not because of the reasons you stated. Fans would love new characters IF they were written good. Edit: added some commas and fixed typos
