Fun fact, or sad ,..at the bar Charlie’s older man date (Parry) was killed just weeks after this scene & most viewers had no idea who he was , the heroic fighter pilot he was & how critical he was to the movie putting together and directing the dog fighting scenes from his jet he flew solo along side the film jet. He was an actual decorated Legendary fighter pilot and Top Gun instructor and what Vipers character was based closely on. He was hired as a military advisor /director of flight scenes coordinating with the active duty Navy fighter pilots to coordinate the flight scenes and flew a jet song with the film crew aircraft for the air to air scenes. They were finishing the final flight scene when the Naval pilots headed back as wel as the film jet. “parry” didn’t follow them back which wasn’t strange as he’d go fly after filming. Shortly after his voice came over the radio saying he was experiencing some mechanical problem. The Naval pilots responded as well as flight boss but he never responded. His jet went down at some point shortly after his final call. They said it must have been violent and fast as he would have had time to respond at altitude. He was killed in the final flight scene. You’ll see this movie is dedicated to him. There’s still a mystery today as to how things unfolded as he was one of the best pilots on the planet at that time and hd plenty of altitude at call to communicate multiple relays and even glide for some time. We lost an amazing combat veteran fighter pilot and top gun instructor responsible for training over a decade of the United States best fighter pilots as well as a decorated combat fighter pilot with a long career as a fighter pilot on active status. It’s sad to see him in those scenes knowing who he was and that just weeks later he loose his life. Also jsut fyi, the F-14 Tomcat had a history of deadly flat spins as shown in the movie but they were particularly deadly in the F-14 that no other fighter for the US had problems with. The movie shows the jet in a flat spin after flying though Iceland jet wash which puts out Mavericks righh engine first putting him into a flat spin. Once the F-14 goes into a flat spin as it’s velocity decreases it begins to lose altitude much faster than other fighters because the F14 is a massive fighter jet and Becasue it was a swept wing fighter (the wings extend forward for slow speed for lift and retract backwards for supersonic flight , and storage on the carrier to fit more jets. Becasue it’s a swept wing fighter it can’t carry missiles on the wings or the angles would change so the designers designed a very large body so they could hang a large amount of missiles and bombs on the aircraft. What they found consequently is the body was SO big , out of plane it was a massive airbrake slowing the jet in problematic situations or a flare out of one or both engines and it’d js it fall out of the sky, glide distance was poor in the F14. This is where the canopy strikes occurred. As thr F-14 went into a flat spin faking to the earth , the huge body created a wind block of sorts that kept the canopy from ejecting up and out of the way like a normal fighter so the canopy would eject while falling with little wind affecting it it would “hover” over the cockpit as it slides backwards. The RIO in the backseat ejects first in the sequence so a number of RIOs in flat spins ejected directly into the canopy as shown in the movie. The ejection seats actually use a similar rocket motor to an air to air missile, when they eject the fixed rockets fire enjecting the seat and pilot out at such a velocity that if you down rest your head back fractures in the neck occure . Ejecting at that intense speed falling vertically the body of the jet is blocking the wind sending the ejection seat much faster than typical directly into the canopy that tended to hover 5-10 feet above the jet. The impact with the canopy killed every single RIO that had a canopy strike in the F-14. The helmets did nothing , it’s fracture the helmet and crush the scull. About every reaction I’ve seen to this movie they are confused about what initiated the flat spin (the jet wash and engine flare out as it’s taking the aircraft in fronts jet exhaust , extremely hot air that contains no oxygen in the jet stream Becasue it’s burned in the jet engines process. Jet engines must have cool air and obviously oxygen to burn , so when a jet flies too close to another , if the second jet flies through that jet exhaust and the intakes suck up hot oxygen less air it puts the engine out in seconds. The F14 jet engines are placed far apart unlike the F18 thsts close together and the engines had over a 1:1 thrust to weight ration in its extremely powerful engines, so if one engine goes out, so if one engine goes out in a maneuver it will kick the tail out with unbalanced thrust on one side of the aircraft. If the maneuver assists the flame out side it kicks the jet into a flat spin , it’s essentially rotating like a frisbee. Every aircraft since is east to get out of a flat spin , throttle on and turning opposite of the spin but the F14 was so big and heavy , assisted spin and one engine out , the other struggled to correct a spin. So yes, flat spins are a real thing , even today but every fighter since the F14 can correct it quickly. Unfortunately the F14 was our air to air dominance interceptor/fighter so the flat spins and killed RIO’s were something that jsut happened through the jet lifespan and nothing could correct it. The idea for the flat spin and canopy strike was the military flight advisors idea to make it more realistic. A number of more recent fighter pilots flying anything after the F-14 Tomcat shoot down the idea of the canopy strike saying it wouldn’t ever happen and was a stupid thing to put in that’s fake but F-14 pilots and instructors corrected the incorrect comments. The Navy was not thrilled that Top Gun was including the death from thst real scenario because it was something they played off to the public and widows as just a result of the circumstances not wanting the public to know they were aware of the flat spin issue and a decent number of deaths from canopy strikes but did nothing to fix it becasue there wasn’t much they could do. Anyway, that’s the explanation of what was going on and how Goose was killed. The flight movie advisor wanted it added to the movie in honor or the RIO’s that lost their lives and to also put out there in cinema what was decently covered up for a long time. Just a note, Tom cruise never flew any of the jets in Top Gun or Maverick accept for his P-51 Mustang in Maverick. All aircraft were flown by active duty Navy Pilots. The aircraft carrier was on active duty as well during filming. I’m Maverick Tom Cruise in the actual flight scenes is sitting in the back of 2 seater F-18. He did get to do a catapult launch off the carrier as a passenger which is really cool but contrary to the media and the marketing , he never flew the F-18. Some youtuber actual active duty fighter pilots for the US Navy and combat fighter pilot veterans with channels came out after the media hype of Tom cruise flying the F-18’s & humiliated the marketing saying there is NO way, EVER that the US Navy would allow an actor to fly a tax payers $60 Million Dollar fighter Jet that takes years and years of intense training to fly, pilots that are the smartest and most fit officers are the only ones allowed to fly military aircraft. KZreadr CW LeMoine, a US Navy and a air Force combat fighter pilot and advisary air pilot for dog fights training as well as a few other fighter pilot KZreadrs made a mockery of Tom cruise on a morning show actually confirming he flew the F-18’s and his director and marketing pushed it as well. So actual active duty fighter pilots for the Navy posted videos saying they know those pilots that did the flying and confirmed he never flew and the made fun of everyone for actually thinking that was possible. It made HUGE waves prior to the movie comming out and rightfully so made the Maverick people look bad for lying but a few weeks later all videos were taken down from the pilots and CW LeMoine said that Tom Cruise legal team, some of the biggest lawyers in Hollywood sent him a cease and desist letter to remove all videos denying it and threatens a gag order. He said I may get sued for this but I will comply but I was told to not comment on why and jsut shut up so it would look like I was wrong and embarrassed but here’s the facts. I’m going to be sued if I don’t comply claiming I’m hindering hype for the movie. He said he and the other pilots stand by what they said but would take everything down and not mention him not flying again. The next day even that video was gone. So for those that believe Tom cruise flew the F-14 and the F-18, he’s never flown either and never will where he’s not in the military, regardless of what they claimed. It really put a damper on the fighter pilot community , the movie was suppose to be a Love letter to naval avaiation and the movie people ended up lying and then threatening to sue active duty fighter pilots. It’s too bad.

Am I the only one that doesn't find this movie specifically good? It's a 6/10 at best. But I would probably more go for 5/10.
