That's what I love about this film and the director's reason for making it - a message to people who think they "enjoy" violence because they watch violent movies. Here, the violence is tedious, uncathartic, pointless, and horrible. It's pure suffering, which is what real violence is. He wanted to demonstrate "The violence you enjoy in cinema is not real. THIS is what it is really like."

“Anyone who walks out of the cinema doesn’t need this movie, and anyone who stays, does.” - Michael Haneke, director Because the director hates films that use torture as entertainment he said he wanted to make a movie that makes you face pointless violence and gain no insight or value from it. It’s un-cathartic, unenjoyable, frustrating, acts pretentious to purposefully rule you up, and doesn’t even give you shots of the violence. But the biggest move is how the movie breaks the fourth wall to be like “Hey, the killers win BTW. There are no stakes here. You don’t even get to see the actual torture. So why keep watching?” By the end, if you haven’t stopped watching it pulls the rewind trick to be like “Look, we’re even just doing random shit to piss you off now. Seriously, stop watching”. Of course, Zzavid is watching to give us a reaction, so the context is different. But when the director made it, he was making a movie for people watching it alone, to ask themselves “Why did I stick it through to the end?”

The fact that the director made this movie, and then made it again with different actors in a different language but basically shot for shot. This is one of my favorite movies not because I like it - I don’t, really, I’ve watched the original once and the remake twice and I’m good- but it’s kind of historically important for the sub genre and horror in general. Now you’ve seen it you can understand the title card in cabin in the woods! And you should watch Bully, kind of horror adjacent but Michael Pitt had a small roll.

@@zzavid5911 I remember blind buying this movie way back in 2008 and I remember only liking it just because it spoke to my snobby film geek art side. I also just realized they kind of missed out on an opportunity for a sequel but it will be based on a different message. The first movie is about trying to shame people who likes violent movies, and the 2nd movie can be about how white privilage is real. I can see those 2 same white guys breaking into a house owned by a rich black family, and they do the same thing from the first movie the only difference is they didn't care when the family calls the police, and when the police comes the villians were able to get the police to believe them against the black family. After that, they go on and try to do the same thing to the next black family.

That is not the theme of the movie. A large part of Haneke's work is how the media disconnects us from the real impacts of violence. That the distance allows us to remain impersonal while the content genuinely affects our psyche and degrades our humanity. In a lot of ways it's a follow up to Benny's Video. The killers are a stand-in for the audience, they are us -- the crowds who line up year after to year to watch suffering and bloodbaths portrayed on screen without having to confront the savage delight they secretly take in the carnage. Haneke is making the viewer understand the real impact of these depictions by only showing us the consequences and never giving the pay off. By subverting every slasher/torture porn trope, the audience starts as the killers, and ends as the film's victims.

Ah, you're uploads always make my week! Also, just a heads up if you want a gay comedy pallet cleanser from all the horror! The movie Bottoms is finally coming out on digital this week and you HAVE to watch it!!! It's gay, high school, raunchy comedy, about lesbians starting a fight club to hook up with cheerleaders! It's hilarious and weird as hell! (I saw it in theatres)

I absolutely enjoyed your reaction and commentary as always. You always put a smile on my face. I’m hoping that you’re going to consider watching season 2 of Good Omens. Thank you for all of your amazing work!
