Fun fact, Director Neil Marshall didn't want to make a werewolf movie with soldiers, he wanted to make a soldier movie with werewolves, and it really worked. Also, they actually blew up the house, it was only a shell of the front and one side, the internal shots were in a studio.

A lot of the time they use sets for the interiors even if it’s a real house. Sometimes that results in some unintentional comedy. There are movies where just the living room on the set wouldn’t fit inside the exterior they show.

The Russians trained dogs to attack German tanks in WW2. The dog had a mine strapped to its back with a small pole sticking upright. The dog would dive under the tank and crawl forward, the stick would depress and BOOM! The problem is they trained them using Russian tanks, which smell different and sound different to German tanks. When they first tried it in action the dogs apparently turned about and ran under their own tanks... so the program was stopped. Very fortunate for the dogs of Russia.

I definitely chimed in on recommending this one after American Werewolf in London, really glad to see I wasn't alone in championing it! Super glad you enjoyed it, in some ways I feel like this compares to "rule of cool" monster movies like From Dusk Til Dawn, where the movie logic pulls from myth and other movies whenever it feels it'll add to this story, and there's a lot of "go with it, we're leaving it vague on purpose". Rewatching it, I'd forgotten how much of the humour comes from British "Lad" culture, especially football references ("They think it's all over...it is now!" is ingrained into our lexicon, purely from a fevered moment of match commentary replayed forever), but it all scans for these guys being squaddies. Beautiful stuff, and one of my favourite Sean Pertwee projects, he really gets to play around

My number two werewolf movie right after The Howling (1981). The actors were just born for those kind of characters. Great cast. And very talented cinematography. Loved it as well, that the werewolf POV shots were black and white since canines don't see that well other than felines.

This is such a British film. The reactions are very natural for Englishmen and women. Also, fun fact, when the guy is laying on the bed and he is screaming for him to be hit the second time...the actor actually accidentally knocked him out, gave him a proper right hook to his jaw and knocked the actor out cold.

The film is full of references to football, and Cooper's last line is almost directly lifted from Kenneth Wolstenholme's commentary of the 1966 World Cup final. It's the final seconds of the match, England are 3:2 up against West Germany, and the crowd begins to spill over from the terrace: "Some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over!" then, as Geoff Hurst puts away his 3rd goal of the game; "It is now! It's four!"

This is my favorite werewolf movie. Sean Pertwee is seriously underrated - he also played Smith in Event Horizon. Another werewolf movie I recommend, despite its complete hokiness which makes it more comedic than scary, in my opinion, is Bad Moon. It holds a special place in my heart because of a prank that my mom pulled on me and my sister when we were young in which she had a really tall friend wear a mask that was very similar to the werewolf in the movie and had him creep around her trailer scratching at the walls and pretending to grab our childhood friend, Ethan's, mom when she went to check that the back door of the trailer was latched. He let out quite a string of expletives when that happened. We were all terrified. The "werewolf/Dogman" then stood outside the window directly behind the couch until I saw him out of the corner of my eye and flinched. My sister saw I was staring at something, turned to see what appeared to be the very same face we had just seen in the movie then she screamed and cried. My mom even had the local radio station play into it by emphasizing the Michigan legend of Dogman before her friend put on his performance. She was such a prankster and I miss her dearly.

Although set in Scotland, the movie was actually shot in Luxembourg. The house at the end was built purposefully for the film as there were no Scottish style houses in Luxembourg (funnily enough) but only the front and left hand side were built. All the other shots were done in a studio. The house blown up at the end was a 3ft high replica.

From 2002 until now I believe that Dog Soldiers is the perfect low budget horror thriller movie about Werewolves. Neil Marshal , the director of the movie did his thing. What he knows to do best. Direct the movie so flawless. And credits also to Mark Thomas about the badass soundtrack of the movie. A movie rare gem. Straight to point, no rubish, gothic atmosphere, gory, brutal and unpredictable, full of suspense. Script has great time flaw . No filler scenes. Everything has a point. That's way you do it. Horror builds in every minute. A badass werewolf movie .

I just wanted to put a thought in your head. I’ve been watching several of your reactions lately and enjoying them a lot. It recently came to my attention that one of the greatest horror movies of my high school years was actually directed by Peter Jackson, the mastermind behind the Lord of the Rings movies. Before he got that big, he actually did several horror movies, and you can feel his genius at work in them. The specific one I’m talking about here is Dead Alive. Not many reactors have covered it, sadly, because it deserves more recognition. Put that somewhere on your list of must-sees.

I remember watching the director and writers answering questions and the question of why she had not turned with the family came up and basically the way they described it is like needing to poop you can given in and go as soon as you feel you need to or you can chew it back and hold it in for as long as you can until you can no longer hold it in, so her character genuinely wanted out I think and so she was holding it in in the hopes the soldiers could hold off the werewolf's until morning but when she realized they couldn't she switched sides back to the werewolf side and in the end let the transformation happen. This is one of my fave werewolf movies it sadly however never got the recognition it should have and because it was a budget movie it was barely advertised and i think it never even made it to US cinemas due to it not being advertised to gain interest, thing I like most is there was no CGI and the werewolfs where all practical

  • @murtonianj97

Another fun fact- the stock footage at the beginning of the film was filmed in Scotland. The rest of the outside footage and shots was filmed in Luxembourg. Everything around the house was done in a studio (I’m not sure where). Also it’s great this film is getting love from the US/ Canada etc. famously the US tends to struggle with understanding the British sense of humour😂
