This movie is way better than it has any right to be. Also, the amputee vet and the old vets on the last ship are actual vets that they cast, hence some of the wooden acting. Pretty well worth it though.

They weren't "acting", they were performing their duties just as they had in the day. Orders need to be relayed clearly and concisely on watch to ensure correct actions are taken. How do I know this? I served on board a Merchant Marine vessel for a time as a navigator's (2nd Mate) assistant. My father was the Captain, both on and OFF the ship lol

That's the problem. People don't know how to express simple joy anymore. They have to tear everything apart if it isn't 100% perfect. Now, if this movie came out 20 years earlier, it would be considerably more favorably mentioned. But nope, anything from this side of the millennium, especially in the 2010's, HAS to be torn down for simply existing, it seems.

Everyone is a keyboard warrior, safe behind a degree of anonymity, all with an unfiltered platform to preach across. Rewind the clock a few decades, and the only option was to write and article to a magazine publication, and hope to hell they print it,... and even then, a reader has to actively look for the specific section of the specific magazine to even READ it. I just wish more people would take the old axiom "if you think you can do better, do it yourself" to heart, as we also live in an era with an absolutely unprecedented level of access to filmmaking equipment, technology, software, and even relatively free distribution that we have ever seen. 31:31 The answer is yes, yes they do do that much damage. I know other comments have mentioned this but when they brought out the USS Missuri, I got literal chills. Iowa class warships are still to this day seen as the best by most people. My favorite Iowa class ship story comes from the Korean War when the USS Wisconsin was hit by North Korea and took damage (a hole a couple of feet big) and unleashed all 9 of her big guns back, not only hiting the artillary gun that got her but obliterating the entire area. Her escort ship flashed the signal "Temper, Temper" before they just continued on their way.

To film the scenes with the USS Missouri they actually towed it around the port and nearby sea before it returned to it's museum location after it came back from maintenance. She's a WW2 era Iowa-class battleship, 1 of 4 build (and all 4 still exist as museums). The Iowa-class was the last class of battleship ever build and no other active navy vessel in the world has firepower to match it. GPS- guided missiles are more accurate then a really really big gun these days.

I actually like this movie, quite a bit. It displays, as many "alien" based movies do, that it's not their biological bodies that are super-enhanced, but their technology that is WAY beyond ours. Losing their communications ship prior to landing was a great plot point, which means they HAD to find how "we" sent the signal in the first place, then commandeer THAT. Being technologically superior vs physically superior IS the most likely scenario. The ONLY thing that caught my attention about that was that parts of their real anatomy was exposed, and they likely didn't have a physical defense against the bacteria present on this planet. See the 1953 version of War of the Worlds for an example of that. Also, the aliens did have "lizard like" eyes, which, had the dinosaurs not been killed off as they were, we ourselves could potentially have those. (Which is why the original series "V" worked so well, as well.)

Also, this is (sadly) one of the few sets of alien invaders out there that act realistically and show anything like sensible tactics and military strategy. No, seriously. When they lose members of their limited supply of soldiers they launch search and rescue missions to find them, those preserving their limited numbers and denying the enemy intelligence. They use smart munitions and prioritize military targets in favor of preserving civilian infrastructure they want to capture. They indentify threats and take them out instead of ignoring them. They ACTUALLY TAKE EVASIVE ACTION. Compared to the barbarian horde from space model most big budget blockbuster movies use these guys are frigging geniuses. I have plenty of gripes about Battleship, but it's balanced by some amazing surprises and good points.

They also use their weapons sparingly. The first volley they fire is just a few shots and when point defense wipes that volley off they immediately respond with a larger volley to get through point defense. Their largest vessel, likely command point hunkers down and attempts to stealth. And succeeds against every sensor known to us but mk1 eyeball. And when they realize that they've been noticed, plop down a strong shield to to prevent enemy reinforcements.

my favorite part of the whole movie is when they finally get the Mighty Mo involved, with the help of the veterans who knew how she operated, "What do you need, son?" "I need to borrow your boat." cue AC/DC! now, I served in the US Navy from 1983 to 1987, and they had brought all 4 of the Iowa Class battleships back into service for a little while. Stationed out of NAS Alameda in California, I got to see the Missouri tied up at Treasure Island, which is between Oakland and San Fransisco. and the golden age of battleships is one of my favorite periods in history, from the battle of Jutland all the way through WWII. there was a group of people who objectively studied all warships that had ever sailed in the world, and stacking them up by firepower, fear factor, length of service, etc. the Iowa class stands above all others, even our nuclear powered carriers have yet to match them! in this digital era, the Iowa class battleships' analog targeting system is so accurate, that it never needed to be updated to a computer controlled system!

So I don’t know if anyone knows this about this movie. But the Director did NOT want to make the Aliens the bad guys, he was upset that he was forced to do so. Cause in all actuality, say if we landed on another strange planet with a species living on it. But then they come up and start sending warning shots. We would do anything and everything to protect ourselves. The reason also why they were scared is because they lost their ship that communicates back home in Hong Kong. The Director tried hiding in small ways that the aliens are actually the good guys just protecting themselves why us humans are the actual enemies. This all explains why the aliens don’t just attack, they attack anything attacking them, especially when they saved their friend, they killed no humans, just doing a simple extraction like we would do.

Unfortunately, they didn't make enough money off of it to do another one. They only made less than 1 and a half times their budget, and typically movies are considered unsuccessful if they make any less than 3 times the budget. Given how much goes into these films as far as time and money, just making any profit isn't enough reward to do it again. Hasbro did even worse numbers with the recent D&D movie, and that was a good movie as well, though it was their fault they alienated the D&D fanbase right before the movie launched so people were boycotting it (nothing to do with the movie). For Battleship it was mainly the fact that people know how bad video game movies usually end up being and had even less confidence in one based on a board game. I feel like Hasbro could make a good movie based on Monopoly but nobody would go see it.

If they had named it anything else it would have done better, but Hasbro was making this and they see movies as extended promos for their toys and games. Transformers was a bit different because it had a lot of fans before the movies came out, but Battleship was probably a turn-off. I think the people that did see it didn't realize it was based on the game.

The thing that irritates me is that they're moving that shell down Broadway inside the ship. The big I-beam overhead is there as a railing system to move munitions from fore to aft or back again quickly, so people don't have to carry they damn ammo or missiles. (The Mo used to have Tomahawk cruise missiles on her.) All they had to do was put the shell on the cradle or sling they would have on hand, on the rail, and just push it along the ship which is much easier and faster. You know, instead of trying to *carry* the weight of an engine block or like a VW Bug across all those frames.

So the old battleship they used to shoot the mothership is the USS MISSOURI. It's famously known for a single moment in the Korean War. A mountain full of enemy canons shot at the Missouri from shore, but due to sheer brutality of the Missouri the rounds shot did barely any damage. The Missouri responded by aiming all 9 cannons and firing those "1000lb rounds" at the field of guns and basically wiped the mountain off the face of the earth. A nearby ship messaged the Missouri saying "temper, temper!" The Missouri messaged back simply saying "They started it"

The 16 inch guns on the Iowa class battleships are known as "swimming pool makers". During the Korean war Missouri's sister ship Wisconsin took a 105mm from a North Korean battery. In response she turned full broadside and fired all of her main battery erasing the artillery battery and the hill they were on. These guns pack such a hit when they do fire full broadsides it pushes the ship sideways in the water

How much damage an iowa class battleship 16 inch of freedom do, well to put it simply the shell is basically a Volkswagen Beetle fill with TNT and it's seemed like they mostly use this shell The reason why the alien kinda fail to blow iowa apart is because most of their weapon looks like they're only exploding on the outside with little penetration damage, this also explain why they need to basically hit the entire ship with the things to actually blew it apart as shown in the beginning when they're investigating, one thing i wanna add is this is also how you sunk a ship in the classic battleship game, by hitting the entire ship with peg so it's a cool nod And the other reason why the alien ship blew up so spectacularly is because most of their weapon mount is exposed and considering you can detonate their weapon with the 30MM CIWS, i think what happened here is one of those weapon actually detonated and cause a catastrophic chain reaction, how devastating this is? Well this is how HMS Hood sunk, because she got hit by Bismarck shell, only one but unfortunately it detonated right in her ammunition magazine which is where most ship store their ammunition, this one shell basically detonated the entire hood front ammo store causing a catastrophic chain reaction that split the ship in half and sinking it within minutes

It's sad that the Age of the main battleship is long over because those ships are so fucking beastly. These days it's all about naval aircraft and fast attack ships like destroyers with GPS guided cruise missiles. There's just something about a heavily-armored warship that can deliver a full ton of sheer sundering firepower per turret barrel that speaks to that primal urge to kick some serious ass. Goddamn I fucking love old battleships.

You know, I like the idea of the aliens being relatively friendly. But if they *were* ... and they had the kind of interstellar travel capability they demonstrate, they should be able to establish a stable orbital mechanic and establish local contact. They never needed to break atmo and land (crash?) which looks like them trying to establish a beachhead for invasion. Just sit up there and make a phone call. As we learn to talk/communicate, I'm sure we'd be willing to let you make a phone call back home. No need to just HIJACK our shit without asking.

You mentioned that this film might have been directed by Michael Bay, well not quite. It was directed by Peter Berg, who also has a good working relationship with the US Military. He's also done The Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg, The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx, Deepwater Horizon, Mile 22, and Patriot's Day all with Wahlberg again. I'm sensing a pattern here... Surprised that Wahlberg wasn't in Battleship as well after knowing this.

What's funny about those alien ships is they're not even Warship! They're most likely just mining or exploring ships. Build to withstand nature, not armed enemies. And help them studying about the planet they're coming into! Their weapons which fire shells that flying not very fast, rely on gravity and having some weird characteristic, those shells buried deep into the target then explode, it's make more sense to tell that those shells are mining explosive charges, design to burry deep into terrain and rocks rather than used against their enemies !! Not to said, their ships did not have many of launcher to fire those shells!! If they are Warship, and that are their true weapon mount to fight, then those ships should be filled with numerous launchers ! BUT NO, they only have 2 mounted!! And when they capture a alien, that alien showed his memories about their war, as a effort to told the MC that war is a no go!! The alien who stayed back on the human's warship is also not posing any threat at first, he just trying to immobilize it so they cannot be a threat to his comrades! And as a result, no one liked to be beaten up, they attack him when he trying to do his job, so he's pissed. It's simple!! Their personal arm weapons mounted on their hand's armor also look more like a digging tool rather than for killing!! Also, you can clearly see in the capture alien's memories, THEY HAVE AIRFORCE, and their Warplanes could do some serious damage to ground or sea forces, but they never occupied the sky above humans fleet, and trying to prevent them do the same by separating themself with the forcefield!! That's because they're not coming for war, their only flying vehicle functioning like a transport ship more than a Warplane!! When you're isolated on enemy territory, you shouldn't provoke them!! The sound shockwave on the first encounter with those Amphibious ships is more likely a way of them to communicate! They're new to human's tech, they didn't know that such a simple communication call could make that serious threat pose on human's POV!! Their first shots also not that lethal, they clearly aimed for the turret rather than trying to destroy the whole ship!! Also with the metal balls, first time they use that scary weapon, they not attacking civilian directly, but trying to destroy human's trafic system so they cannot surround them with armed forces. There will be casualties, but at least they had tried to avoid unwanted casualties that by not attacking unarmed peoples like the little boy!! In conclusion, these guys just trying to explore a new world which they thought that would be pretty primal and have no civilization occupied there (since there's many things could emit a radioactive beam like a volcano eruption or explosion of radioactive materials, and those ships were sent to find out if they could start mining this new planet)!! All their act were just to defend themself and trying to survive, calling for help from their home world. They not really sabotaging, causing conflict or provoke a war!! So i felt bad for them for having such so bad luck!!!

The reason why Missouri survives the shot is technically her design. Enemy alien projectiles are design to hit the deck of the ship. Which is strongest armor layout on WWII Battleships. Especially Iowa Class. Missouri was designed to take shots from the deck. With multiple layers of armor. Because back then we don’t have uncivilized farting projectiles. We are more civilized by using big guns. So the fact that she just got Iowa at the C turret. She is still functional, due to her design. So yeah, Battleships were design to fight at range during WWII.

I see why this movie gets panned on so badly. But I'll tell you this, the literal second I realized that the veterans were about to volunteer to crew the ship I couldn't help but get emotional. That was one of the coolest, most heroic things imaginable. And it was only further enhanced because they got real veterans to play them. I didn't even know that until after, but I somehow just KNEW as they were walking across the deck that these guys had to be the real deal. Seriously, all this movie needed was a more streamlined, less clunky plot and a main character who was actually somewhat competent and likable. Rihanna was actually not even one of the things wrong with this movie. She played her role amazingly.

This movie would probably have really been a hit in the 80's even without todays technology. We were just able to let it all go and enjoy a silly movie back then. That's how Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, etc. had careers after all. By the way during the soccer match scene they didn't know what ship was coming in. The stopped and had to reset up on the fly to get footage of it.

My one complaint is when he ask "we need to borrow your boat" No NAVY man would ever call a battleship a boat, it is a ship. That is like calling an 18 wheeler a car. The USS Missouri was built for war, ended WWII on her deck and fired the first shots of the gulf war. She was retired after, at the time of filming she was returned to drydock after 20 years for maintenance. As a floating Museum it is unlikely for her to carry the amount of ammo shown in the film, also no modern ship still has those big guns. Before her retirement she did cary missles and seewiz defenses, likely removed aswell. While most filming was on another battleship Museum, Under Siege also portrays the Missouri just prior to retirement. In that film there is stock footage used that gives an uncredited cameo for the actor/senator Fred Dalton Thompson, who is in the bit with President George Bush.

It's a movie trope, for people to refer to things with an ironic term, it makes it more dramatic. They do it because it resonates more with the average movie-goer. Had they changed it, the line would have fallen flat with mostly everyone but people in the Navy. How iconic would the Scarface scene have been if he said "Say hello to my assault rifle with grenade launcher attachment"?
