The book is so amazing. In the book, ender is much younger and his brother Peter is much more volatile. The mind games they played with him are so much more complex. The fight scenes are much more vicious. I highly suggest the book.

Yeah, this is one of those where you should really just read the book, because it's just mind-blowing in comparison to the very mediocre film adaptation that didn't really convey the scope of it all in neither breadth nor depth. Not only the more complex mind games, but the more vivid descriptions of the psychological states and the games he's playing (both the war game and the more personal adventure on his pad), not to mention so much of the complex relationships between Ender and his siblings, and their relationship with each other and their entire arc in taking over Earth politically through their writings. And as if that's not good enough, the subsequent books hold up to the exact same standard, especially Speaker for the Dead, but I'm not going to spoil anything about that in case he might want to read them, although I have my doubts about that ever happening, heh.

The book is top tier. Honestly the whole series. It's even on the military's recommended reading list. But the sequels that follow the character Ender are usually when he's much older. There's a sub-series revolving around Bean and Ender's brother called the Shadow sub-series. Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, etc. Also amazing reads.

_Speaker for the Dead_ is such an amazing take on a lot of issues related to "us vs. them" and the overarching themes of xenophobia, blending in a lot of ecology too, which as someone who greatly enjoyed the ecological themes of _Dune_ I liked to see very much.

Couple of things....the main thing about the book that is cut for the movie is Ender's brother and sister becoming blogging/social media stars and political thought leaders, ending with his brother becoming the Hegemon of Earth. Also, he wrote a whole series of companion novels called the "Ender's Shadow" series about Bean's life.

The film, although I admire the effort and always love Harrison Ford, is barely a shadow to the complexity and character of the book. Maybe a 2-movie arc, but your idea of anime (a series!) is probably the best way to get the spirit of the book across. It's so worth reading.

25:35 The reverse is true, in a way. Ender's strategic kryptonite is a desire to understand his opponent and use that understanding to defuse the situation, NOT to resort to brutal tactics. At his heart, he is not a ruthless military commander. Had Ender known it was not a simulation, he would have attempted to find a peaceful solution, which humanity's political and military powers could not tolerate because the Formics would always be an existential threat to humanity if they ever turned hostile. So... they made it a 'game'. As much as the training program and facility is militarized, it is structured to resemble a game, with points and team names. It brings out the "best" in its students by playing on their desire to win the game, which is practically universal in kids. If it's a game, kids will decimate enemy forces by the millions with zero compassion. And that's what they needed from Ender; all of his strategic brilliance, utterly unfettered by moral foibles. And look at what happened; Ender adopted a brutal, ruthless, and utterly inhumane strategy, sacrificing the lives of his entire fleet and extinguishing an entire species.

Backstory the movie kind of glosses over: after first contract, the aliens nearly wiped out humanity. This happened because in their society, only the queens are self-aware. All of the others are basically animals under telepathic control of the queens. They didn't understand that every human is self-aware, and slaughtered humans in large numbers because that's just how war goes for them. The humans freaked out and basically ended all freedom. They even made all religion illegal. That is why it was so significant when Bean used that Muslim phrase. He was basically exposing himself as a Muslim to Ednder. That was a really significant moment in the book. The government decided that the only way to produce a military leader capable of defending the aliens was to build this horrible school. They don't care how many children die at the school as long as they get their ultimate leader.

You are right that the special effects were phenomenal. Fans of the book have been waiting DECADES for a movie to come out, but this version didn't quite hit the mark because there is so much material. It would have been nice if it was made into a tv show so we can really follow Ender on his journey.

I love the comment about how they couldn't really make a sequel. The book was written purely to give the necessary backstory in order to tell the actual story of Ender Wiggin, which takes place thousands of years later when he's middle aged - he loses decades traveling light speed each time to a different planet to find a possible home to raise the formic queen. In a way, you really couldn't do a sequel because this was only the prequel to the actual story.

I'm so glad you watched this! It does 'grandeur' so well with the cinematography and music. I loved reading books through high school. I read several every week, getting in trouble with teachers for reading during their lectures... Ender's Game is my most read book by a long shot. I still have my copy, 20 years later. Extremely worn from being stuffed in my backpack so many times. There's SOOO much more detail in the books that really makes every character feel more complex, and so much inner monologue from Ender exploring why certain actions meant something, whereas in the movie they have to rush in an explanation for the scene while quickly moving on. Like the Mind Game is truly a mindf*ck of a game. But they only show us the quick stuff that's absolutely necessary for the rest of the movie, ignoring his mental state. And also, his brother and sister back home are explored SOOO much more in depth, they're like 1/4 of the book.

Top book series of all time. This movie is a fart in the wind compared to the books. The books are way more brutal! Edit - just read all the other comments! I LOVE Harrison Ford, but when I first heard they were making Ender's Game into a movie, I thought Denzel Washington would have been perfect as Colonel Graff. l like the movie but I think everything that's good about it comes from the book. Asa Butterfield was a great casting choice for Ender, he's a great actor even as a kid he was great and he was able to handle the part of Ender. Butterfield's movie Hugo (directed by Martin Scorcese) proved how good he was at a young age. Hugo is a fantastic movie and proves Scorcese can make wonderful family films too if he decides to do so. Highly recommended, especially at Christmas time!!! I loved the book Ender's Game, read it many times. I read all the books in the Ender and Bean series. Then I found out what a hateful bigot Orson Scott Card was and I still can (mostly) separate art from artist, but that really sucked learning that.

The movie does pretty good. But the book is a lot better, though slow from about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way. What the main 2 things that the movie doesn't convey well are: 1) Ender was chosen because of how violently effective is methods are (in that they are almost always attacks to ensure that those things don't continue. But he's also able to empathize with his enemies, to the point of being able to understand and love them. Which is why he's so effective: He can understand his enemies, know what reaction they'd have, and then attack in a way that makes sure they won't ever harm again. 2) Ender intellect. He's able to do what most others don't even think of: Rotating battles in any direction in his mind, and having no problem keeping track of positions as he does so.

I love that they put the quote at the beginning of the movie, "In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him." Because after watching the movie you realize that Ender was driven by his ability to be compassionate as well as anything else, and that he committed genocide and didn't even get to 'love' them until after they were gone.

Possible Spoilers: The problem is in order to negotiate you have to be able to communicate. One side is a purely telepathic hive mind with no concept that the vocals of the enemy was communication. The other had only latent abilities in that area I believe. Otherwise how can they implant the dreams.

the build up to the reveal that there was no training, in the book, was phenomenal. I had to stop reading to process it just like Ender lol. Shouldnt have been a film, a mini series or animated would have done a much better job at the pacing issue

This movie made a lot of predictions about video games long before they were technologically feasible. They can definitely make sequels. There are lots more books. After this, Ender traveled great distances at near light speed looking for a home for the queen. This means he traveled through time at a slower rate than the rest of humanity. When he comes out and starts trying to live again, he is remembered by humanity as one of the greatest villains.

I got the audio book for Ender's game when i was a semi-driver and when the twist started to drop i no shit had to find the closest exit and just park for a good 30min while I listen to Ender coming to terms with the fact he has been committing Xenocide across a portion of the galaxy and the complete meltdown that inevitably follows... I am a strong man who has lived a world of hurt and not much makes me cry any more but I was a god damn mess that day like screaming in pain it strait broke me. I had to get a hold of every book up to Children of the Mind (Even the Shadow series)and am seriously thinking of finishing that collection because the Piggy's and Jane omg beautiful wonderful Jane yea they are worth checking out.

I appreciate your review. This has been one of my favorite Sci-fi books along with Starship Troopers since it came out when I was 14. I was excited when the movie was announced and raved about the book to my wife for weeks. Unbeknownst to me, she downloaded the book and read it in secret then arranged for a date night on opening night. She didn't want to be confused and be able to have a coherent discussion about the differences between the book and the movie. That is one of the best things anyone has ever done for me. I married a good one!

Before they made this I always said there was no way to make that book into a movie correctly. They did a surprisingly good job though. Not perfect but really good for what they needed to communicate. Particularly the final sequence of space battles are EXACTLY how I pictured them in my head when I read the book. It felt like someone had reached into my brain and plucked out my imagination of that part of the book. If the movie got you interested, the book is in fact better and so worth a read. Interestingly, Enders Game was not supposed to be a book. The book Orson Scott Card was trying to write is what turned out to be the 2nd book in the series, Speaker for the Dead. Enders Game was supposed to be a prolog for Speaker for the Dead to explain who Ender is and what he is doing out in space and it just ended up being so long that it became it's own book. Speaker for the Dead is also a fantastic book, highly recommended.

If you need to read any of the Card books about Ender Wiggin, it must be Speaker for the Dead. That one shows how Andrew and Valentine deal with the guilt of genocide.

The book really isn't that long, but they've for sure excluded a lot. They've got the most important things, though, considering that it's a one-off movie and not a series.

Wish it had done better at the box office so we could have gotten a sequel. The books are incredible. Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite writers ever and the Ender saga is incredible. Then he expands the lore and drops books that explain the first ,and second bugger wars, what happens to Bean after the Ender saga, and what happens to Ender, thousands of years in the future thanks to light speed travel elongating his life.

The book is superlative. The actor that played Ender Wiggin did a phenomenal job in this movie but ultimately the way it was filmed and what they chose to cut (and how they reframed what they chose to keep) ultimately weakened the whole impact of the game that Ender played. It's also a lot easier to lose sight when reading text of how young the children were and how manipulated they were, for the years before and during Battle School. In the film, surrounded as they were by adults, you're constantly reminded of the discrepancy which doesn't help.
