I just traded my Push 2 in when I got the MODX6 last week. As much fun and as productive as it was, I just didn't use it that often; overall I'm much happier on keys than pads. I don't really like the raw Live workflows anymore either, I've settled on Cubase for my main DAW, Cubasis on iPad, and Reason for goofing around. (I have, or have tried others)

This is exactly what I said to somebody the other week. I've never had much interest in recording but Ableton feels more like using an instrument to me me than using a DAW. I haven't been using Ableton for very long & I don't have a clue what I'm doing but I really enjoy it. I find it very easy & fast to work with.

You said it perfectly. Live is for making music. You can record tracks like other DAWs but it is much more of an instrument. I don't think it's the best choice for tracking a rock band. I would use reaper for that, but you could use live for anything

I think Ableton is incredible. It's not just a random choice by a lot of music makers. The company is focused and never stop improving. On another note, I made holes all over my desk for cables. It's so much better now. Ok the surface of the desk looks strange but the cables are totally out of the way. I am going to build a new desktop with holes everywhere that actually look good. The way we work we don't care about holes everywhere unless we need to write in paper but who does that anymore. I use an old iPad for note taking and memos. Great video, as usual.

Perry Pelican has Push changed how you compose for the better? What do you think are the advantages of it vs other devices - for example I have an APC 40 and keyboard controllers and they feel “good enough”. But I do get the sense there’s some nice advantages to Push. It’s just always hard to justify a Push vs buying a new Synth at similar price point.

Mainly using Ableton and Cubase. Have had both Push 1 and 2 but sold them both. As a singer and guitarist I like Ableton because I work live and it seems to lend itself more easily to live gigs. For basic on/off and song selection I use the Softstep 2. Ableton plays some recorded backing tracks as well as soft instruments. If I’m not playing guitar I’ll run external instruments via MIDI as well. It’s all good! Thanks for your great channel!!

So regarding playing back scenes in session mode on push, when you switch your controller to session view you may notice that the note repeat subdivision buttons to the right of your pads illuminate green. Those are now play buttons correspond to each scene, displayed as a horizontal line on the grid. Hope that helps

I've had my Push 2 since Spring 2016 and one of the things that made it come alive for me was adjusting the pads to be more sensitive. Try 8 - 6 - 7 for the values. I spent months arriving there, so figured I'd share. I switched from Cubase to Ableton in 2006 or so, never looked back once. Now that I have the Push as well? Pssh! I love having such a simple setup that can do so much. Have fun, Bo. :)

I've been trying to like Live for about a year and there are so many things to like about it (including the Push 2). But in the end I've gone back to Reaper because 1) MPE and PolyAT is not easily supported in Live and it works seamlessly in Reaper and 2) customization: Reaper is so flexible it can be daunting, but you can make it conform to you rather than the other way around. One thing I started leveraging heavily in Live is the Instrument Rack and I'm not yet sure how to pull that off in Reaper.

So glad you made this video - Thank You! I’m a long time Ableton user but never invested in push because I prefer keyboard interfaces and it always seemed like a tool for producers who want to make beats and not for musicians. I learned a lot about the workflow advantages of Push vs the screen UX and would love to hear from other Push users whether it provides some creative flow enhancements or is it mostly about speed and efficiency gains? Perhaps those two are related... Regarding the video - the Ableton Product mangers will get a long list of UX challenges from it. As an Ableton user there were a bunch of times I wanted to explain how It worked to you even though I’ve never touched a Push. It clearly helps to understand the Ableton workflow and data model (egTrack vs Device vs Scene vs Clip). For new users to the platform all of that has a steep learning curve.

I love live/push2 because there are so many DIFFERENT ways to make music🎶 Try building a drum rack with max4live drum instruments and adding effect (chains) to individual pads. Simpler is powerful and wavetable is badass. Even with the steep learning curve, the results are worth it. Have fun!

Logic Pro X because a friend of mine always used it in his bedroom studio setup and chilling there all the time I got to know the workflow and so when I built my own studio it was a no-brainer for me. I think it'a a very intuitive DAW especially for artists and home recording musicians who don't go into the technical side of things too deep. Also for beginners in music production and such. And I absolutely love it!!! 🙌 Off topic, will there be a MakeN0ise 0-Coast video at some point? I know this won't be helping your gas 😂 but I guess you know about it, it's s been out for some time now. It's a really interesting synth and it would be dope to see you use it and hear your thoughts and experience. Anyway thank you and keep up the good work!

I got used to my push 2 very quickly, it's actually not that difficult. Maybe 30-60min of just playing around without any tutorials or manuals, and I'm no pro in Ableton Live either. Just clicking stuff that's on the screen. Very soon I started changing individual drums as well. I think you'll master it very quickly. The only thing that let me down (besides the screen brightness off-power, which cannot be compared to NI products) is the touch-strip, which sometimes works well and sometimes not so much. It may depend on the finger position horizontally, but I haven't figured that out.

I use FL Studio, which kind of universally feels like the "other" DAW. We can do just about anything in FL Studio, but it's going to be a weird journey through some audio theory to get there. Take sidechaining for instance. Other DAWs, you can look up a tutorial and have yourself a sidechain 5 minutes after learning what that is. In FL Studio, there's 3 ways I know of to do it. I personally prefer putting a peak controller on whatever I want to punch through and then use the output from the peak controller to automatically turn down a volume insert on whatever I want to "compress". I don't really "get" how to route audio to two different inputs on a compressor to make sidechain compression happen normally, so I use that workaround instead. FL Studio is like that, but for EVERYTHING. Sends, returns, and busses? You can make those yourself. Live performance (the only genuine letdown I've ever had in FL Studio)? You can program that yourself, if you're willing to put in the time. Drum programming? We've got at least 4 ways to do that, depending on what mood you're in. Now that I know most of this stuff, I shudder at the thought of starting from scratch in a new DAW. And yet, if I want a really good live performance setup or MPE support, that is what I have to do. So the only things I'd consider leaving FL Studio for now are Ableton and/or Bitwig. I really want to wait and see if either Ableton or FL are going to add MPE support so I can avoid at least one extra DAW, but I know that Ableton Live literally has Live in the name for a reason, so I'll probably end up with it eventually.

I made the switch from FL studio to ableton couple years ago... Was frustrating in the beginning but I'm happy I switched. Feels like its easier to be more creative with ableton for me and you will never believe why. There are even more ways to do same things than in FL studio. Super confusing in the beginning but for me in the end it feels more open to own creativity...

good on you man..diving into Ableton. A few months ago i decided to the same myself, coming from Logic. I sort of secretly wished for you to do it, as the reason i did was exactly the same as you talked about here -> a LOT of ppl are using it...so it will be easier to learn watching tutorials and asking for help. i like the clip approach, in session view... and being able to arrange your song in real time, while recording...by launching the clips you want. i’ve just ordered the Maschine Jam, actually, so it will be my controller. Live Looping and Clip arranging, those are the main reasons i got into Ableton. If Push 2 was standalone, like Force, i would have got it. thanks for the video, it’s nice to see you sharing your learning process. you’ll get up to speed in no time, with help from the community. ;) cheers from Portugal

For instance when you were wanting to edit the settings for just the one drum etc you were just a button push away :) Have fun with it! Welcome to the world of the push 2, so glad you got one, its a fantastic machine if you learn it, i have had mine for almost a year, and i have only scratched the surface with it, but done some great tracks though. that aside, you are in for a hell of a learning curve, but if you persist its well worth the effort, i strongly suggest you go to Ableton where you can learn all the super things the push 2 can do, in my opinion, it walks all over the machine Mk iii, talking about native instruments, i have the machine jam sat next to the ableton push 2, and they work in complete harmony together,( get the pun?) if you did not here the answer COMPLETE. the reason the machine jam is in the mix is it makes it easy to control all the levels and effects on my tracks, and see the session without having to switch the push 2, to session mode. i also added a midi controller the nectar 49 impact LX49+ however i was not aware the the push would work with other DAWS? tell me more.... it was great to see a learner, that's what i was like when i got mine. have fun. regards Russell

Also ”Add device” can be anything from adding an instrument to an effect. So if you want to add an instrument to a MIDI track that’s what you should do.

I'm writing this before I watch the video and I'm very interested to see how this goes for you. I've been a Reason power user since 5 and didn't really start seriously making music in Live until version 9 came out. While I'm good in both programs I'd say Reason is my quick sketch pad DAW to Live, which just feels much more streamlined in a "let's get to work" DAW manner. I feel I can write a good track in either, but I think I have more fun writing tracks in Reason. Because it's a beautiful mess with and endless library of great sounds and synths. Live is a beautiful mess in a totally different way in that I'm not the biggest fan of it's sounds or some of it's layout and workflow choices, but things logically just make sense (sometimes to a fault). At the end of the day it shouldn't matter where you make music. The best place to make music is the software you enjoy making music the most in and that works for your creative style. Alright, time to watch the video and see how this lil experiment went.

HI, can someone help me out please? Im pretty confused with so much gear out there. I have a drumbrute and now im considering a synth like a minibrute 2 or a launchpad like this ableton push 2. My idea is to make some beats and sounds for recording and then play my guitar as another track on top. Also make a loop and switch to guitar for example. Any tips??? Thanks in advance!!

Ahhh... being a long time FL Studio user, with the love I have for it, I think it lacks a bit on hardware MIDI support. Although it seems that the situation is changing with the release of AKAI Fire controller, but it definitely is not something as usable as the Push. But I'm hoping for the best, Image Line is doing an incredible job improving FL Studio. Although, I'd like to try such hardware as the Push, someday... Nice job!

Bitwig is my weapon of choice too. Seems to be so raw and in my eyes they are the most innovative. But I understand lots of people use Ableton because of the controller support. I am just lucky that I own Nektar MIDI equipment, which is in turn designed for Bitwig. Glad to see someone liking it too. I wondered where the people were! Also if you like Push 2 so much, and Bitwig, there is a good script from Moss for the push controller. I heard some good things about controlling Bitwig with the Push.

Be sure to try it since you seem to own both! (Although the graphics on the push aren't as clean from what I've seen so far)

When I'm recording, I use Reaper. it's really flexible and has a solid, intuitive workflow. I use Ableton Live 10 as an instrument/sketchpad when I travel, and I also use it when I'm flipping a sample. Honestly, Ableton is so powerful and so flexible it's hard to not find it inspiring. Definitely a learning curve when you're coming from a more traditional DAW! I never really "got" the Push though. It just seems like too much money for a bunch of macros and MIDI control. Does it really add $800 worth of control when you're using it, or does a Launchpad suffice?

Push 2. I have Ableton and an MK3, but I'd rather have Push2 (which I'll be getting soon). With any other DAW, I'd say MK3, as it's an excellent piece of hardware. But with Ableton, the Push 2 is also excellent, and has integration with Live that th MK3 just doesn't have.

@@BoBeats Couldn't agree more. I love love love my Maschine Studio, MK2, MK3, and Jam. If only for the custom MIDI Templates that the Controller Editor so generously provides. Sadly the MK3 Template for Ableton is unfinished, but the Studio and MK2 templates give a LOT of awesome functionality for Ableton users. I bought a Push 2 on a 12-month payment plan from American Musical Supply. I don't know how I feel about it, just yet... it's nice, but... the fact it needs to be plugged in to see the screens bugs me a lot. The MK3 is a million times brighter, with bigger, more colorful screens, even just usb-powered... I don't like the squishy feel of the Push 2's function buttons... like, at all. They seem slow or laggy. I don't know. I'm more of a Reaper 5 / Maschine guy and have been for at least the past 7 years, but Ableton is growing on me.... I just think the Launchpad Pro covers most of what I need Ableton for (clip-launching, drum grid, etc)... and the Launchpad X is tremendous, for both Ableton and generic midi controller map use.... might sell my Push 2 once my payments are complete... or I might hang onto it. I don't know... I just... I feel like it's overkill, and overpriced. Maschine MK3 on the other hand... no. The browser / tags / sound library... it is absolutely top-notch, and that's not even including all the extra sounds you get like Komplete Select and stuff... the kits are infinitely better-sounding than all of the stock Ableton drum kits, and it's just insanely fast to find exactly the sound you want... unlike Ableton with Push 2. I think the MK3 even offers all this external midi hardware mapping stuff, in the more recent updates... where's Ableton's 3rd party support? Ya know?
