Carly is the daughter of Richard Simon, cofounder of the Simon & Schuster publishing house. So she was raised in an affluent and well connected family. She would know many famous and "vain" people with private jets. 🤣 But her talent carried her to her own success and fame as one of the top singer-song writers of the 70's and beyond.

She grew up rich but isn't an heiress. Her father died in 1960 when Carly was 17. She was left 60k$ from the 1 million her father received after selling his stake in the company. Adjusted for inflation, she received around 600k USD in today's $. That's a healthy inheritance, but it's not like she was Alice Walton (Wal-Mart) or Françoise Bettencourt (L'Oréal) type of heiress.

She also tells a story of a rich girl who is disillusioned with marriage "That's the way I always heard it should be." The situation may seem unfamiliar to young people today, but in the late 60s and 70s women were just starting to break out of identifying only as "mrs" someone.

Well done! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It still plays often in my truck’s music system. Carly has exuded class for decades. Collaboration was so much easier in the 60s and 70s. All of us who love music benefitted greatly from these nearly spontaneous songs and performances. Thank you for helping keeps so many great tunes alive. Best wishes with the birth of your daughter this week. I have 2 sons and a daughter, all married, and they now have brought us 3 grandsons and two granddaughters. Life is great even when it is difficult. I know you get that too my friend.

I heard that “You’re So Vain” was written about Warren Beatty-not sure if it’s true. I love Carly Simon’s music! Anticipation, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, Coming Around Again, etc. She had many hits. She did a duet with James Taylor, Mockingbird. Thanks for doing your channel. Love it!

Please react next to Carly's songs "Haven't Got Time For the Pain" and "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." And also "Mockingbird," a duet with her then-husband James Taylor, which they performed live at the No Nukes concert in 1979. They are having an absolute ball performing this song together.

BP, Think Simon says. Lol! As others have said, some of the song is about Warren Beatty but Carly refused to answer that question until he book came out. Just in case you're not familiar....he was a huge Actor back then and dated many starlets. Think Tom Cruise level from the 60s to the 80s. He married Annette Bening in 1992. But before he was a player's player. I think he was on more National Inquirers than many others. Just check out his Wikipedia. But Carly says it's about 3 guys so....

OH my gosh!! I am so glad you reacted to this song. This is a timeless song - love it. And the subject of this song was a closely guarded secret for a very long time. Carly refused to divulge who it was about and speculation ran wild for decades. Eventually it she said it was Warren Beatty. Can you imagine? Hearing this song, the details, knowing it about you, but only Carly and you know it's about you? Savage.

Great reaction to a great song. She has large amount of songs. There’s an old saying about children. You’ll teach your sons how to protect themselves but you’ll jump to protect your daughters yourself. It’s a totally different mindset.

Carly has a slew of hits in the early seventies you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing a new Carly Simon hit: "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", "Anticipation", "Jesse", "You Belong to Me", "Legend in Your Own Time", and the list goes on and on.. As far as who she is singing about in "You're so Vain" it is several men she has never said exactly who but had dropped hints that the song has references to Mic Jagger, James Taylor, and movie actor Warren Battey. Carly is a genius and knows that if she flat out told who she is singing about it would take away some of the mystique after all everyone loves a good mystery..
