Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. I also find this song both sad and happy at the same time. The thought that they were so unhappy that they needed to seek companionship elsewhere is sad to me, however because they were able to reconnect it's ultimately happy and I hope it helps with their communication with each other. I shake my head at the thoughts though as it's just a song, not real people, but that's where my mind goes.

We are old buggers who heard this song first time around - no WAY this would have been a big-assed radio in hit in 1979 if it did not have this ending! ;-) Those of you commenting on here that these people have a f*cked up relationship, etc -- look in the mirror. Most of us are always hiding something from everyone, even our partners. Get real, people do their best but they have their secrets. Paying down a mortgage, doing the 9-5, raising kids.... it is all hard, most of the time. People loved this song, because they saw themselves in the story, and the ending was, basically there is a point to "us", and what they would probably want for themselves, maybe....?

He'd been married twice before and had 4 children from those marriages I had 1 child and we had 1 together. Dealing with ex wives and bringing the children together, not to mention financials. But we always found humor to get us through and we never gave up. The ex finally quit trying to come between us ( by using the children, which backfired by the way😂) The last 20 years before he passed, every weekend our house was full of children grandchildren and their friends. We were best friends and I sure miss him even after 10 years of his passing. ❤❤

The story behind the making of this song is wild. He'd hired a studio and musicians to record another song but one of the studio musicians was so drunk he passed out and the session was scrubbed. In compensation he was offered a shorter slot the next day. But for some reason he couldn't record the same song. So that night he wrote this song but the original hook line was "If you like Humphrey Bogart..." It didn't scan right so he switched it on the fly in mid-recording.

I was working at a record store when this came out. People would come in and ask for "That Pina Coleda song" -(The first pressings only used the Escape title but the changed it because no one knew it by the title.) Rupert Holmes was an accomplished songwriter long before this song, having worked with the likes of Barbara Streisand. Before that, he wrote the hit song "Timothy" in 1970, the only top song hit written about cannibalism! 😀

The cycle of most relationships ... after time, you don't necessarily get bored but you do often get complacent and take things for granted. Find a way to change things up, talk, etc. It was great to see your reaction .when you're unrealized ... then you thought about everything you'd said. 😂😂😂 Great reaction (as always)!!! 💞

Rupert Holmes is no stranger to writing songs that generate attention. He wrote and played piano on one of the most infamous pop songs to become an international hit. "Timothy" by "The Buoys", released in 1970. You should listen to it on- or off-air. Can't lie, it would be fun to see you react to it and try to decipher why it was so controversial.... 😊

I think if the song did not have a happy ending it would not have become such a classic, gigantic hit. And funnily, Rupert gives Dahmer vibes at first, but by the end...he's adorable!!! Lol Love your channel, ❤ to the new baby.

One of the most deepest, thoughtful lovestories I’ve ever heard, with a wink and a serious message at the same time. When it comes to relationships my big goal is to never ever stop trying to get to know and learn from that one that you once fell in love…. Never stop being curious, adventurous about you, your partner and your relationship. And let things go as well ❤

I never got a "married" vibe from this. It seemed like the living together thing that everyone was doing back then, because the economy was crap and you needed someone to share the rent, so you might as well sleep together too. 😁 Things were different pre-AIDS. I always liked it because it seemed like they finally communicated instead of just going through the motions and maybe it could become a.lasting relationship.

They both tried to cheat and they both failed at it. Kinda funny. The look on your face at the end was priceless. Might have been better if Rupert didn't dress like a math teacher from the 70s though. Classic story of two people who've been together so long and thought they knew each other so well, they stopped communicating. Then they find out they really didn't know each other as well as they thought.
