I love seeing people react to this song. So many people know it but never pay attention to the lyrics. As a kid I loved this song we used to sing it all the time. I remember when I first actually heard and understood the lyrics it was the same reaction! Rupert had a couple other hits, The other one we loved as kids was called Him. And there are others but I can't think of them right now.

Two thoughts about this song. The sale of Pina Coladas skyrocketed after this song came out. Also, Rupert Holmes remarked that it was played on the radio so much that if he ran into a burning building, saved a baby and ran outside, people would look at him and say, "Aren't you the guy who did the Pina Colada song"?

This song is still Rupert Holmes' biggest hit song ever!!! The song has the dubious distinction of being the very last #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of the 1970s according to Billboard Magazine. Cheesy as it is, this song is still popular to this day. A banger of a song indeed!!!

Back in the day people actually advertised themselves in the local newspapers for everyone to read. The Newspapers were the Craigslist and eharmony of today. The only thing was, everybody bought the newspaper for different reasons but they'd see the naughty side too. It was usually people , like in the song describing themselves and what they were looking for but, they listed their phone numbers!!! Many a murder resulted from the personal ads in the newspapers.

Hi guys! Im 70. Before the days of the internet, before the days of the local BBS's, people seeking out other folks had to either:1./ put a short ad in the Sunday section, of the newspaper, not those freebie things in the supermarket; or, in the supermarket was a cork board with old car salles, apts for rent, and yup people and phone numbers!! Oh, the adventures that, if you chose to, awaited.

It's a great laid back tune and Rupert Holmes really sells the story. The fact that so many don't actually listen to the lyrics beyond the "Do you like pina colada" hook is unfortunate not only because of the fun twist but because, underneath the surface, it actually says something quite insightful about long term relationships; it is way too easy to fall into "dull old routines", to forget the excitement and the reasons why you got together, and to stop seeing your partner as a lover but instead as that boring and slightly irritating housemate! If a shock doesn't come along to reignite the spark and memory of why you are together the drift can become terminal. Although written from the man's perspective and his recognising that it was "kind of mean" that he didn't think of his "lady", it's worth remembering that it was she who initiated the exchange in the personal column--so presumably had the same feelings of boredom and sought escape. Folks, don't forget your partner's human too and remember the days walking hand in hand along the beach next time you argue about whose turn it is to empty the bin (or trash can for our American cousins) or you could get a surprise next time you scroll through Tinder!

The whole song revolves around communication in a relationship where nobody is talking about what they want or what they need or what they evolve to.
