True, though you can say the same thing about a lot of old greats. There’s nobody else like Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin, or Rammstein for that matter. There are genre defining bands that just stand out on a different level. And Pink Floyd is certainly one of them.

It is a fine song, both sad and hopeful, and the awareness of a given situation is right there in the lyrics. And that line, “How I wish, how I wish you were here”, has a strong, underlying feeling of loneliness rooted in missing someone very close and very special

This is about one of the founders of the band, Sid Barrett, who in the days of experimentation became the victim of too much LSD and lost his metal capacity. He could no longer perform and his personality changed radically, but the boys always took care of him, even though he could no longer perform but they "wished he could be here" as the band evolved.

The very lyric you mention, @Bisscute... the fish bowl line, this was my fathers fave line of this song. This song helped him get through his divorce with my mom. They fought a lot so it was shocking when a few weeks before their 20th anniversary she handed him divorce papers and moved out. "Were just two lost souls, swimming in a fish bowl... year after year. Running over the same old ground, that's how we found, the same old fears... wish you were here." They fought a lot but there was nothing he wouldn't do for her when it came down to it. She was his everything, when those same old fears would rear their heads, he n she would get through it together... now he is all alone. This song helped him deal with his pain. Behind me hangs the framed poster of the artwork that's on the screen for this video. That poster belonged to my dad, he passed 12 years ago. This song always reminds me of him.

Not 100% sure.. Thought i recall an interview with David basically saying the same kinda thing. Relationship wise. Both there physically but the love was gone. "Lost souls in a fish bowl." Wish you were here - emotionally, not so much physically. People think the song is about Sid, but not originally.. i guess later they tie him to this song.

It's a constant theme in Pink Floyd's work: people living with cramped souls, "in quiet desperation" because they don't or can't seize life's true potential. Limping through life trying to avoid pain and loss turns out to result in the worst pain and loss of a life not really lived. I think for these guys, this was the true nature of the blues as they experienced it growing up English. This theme is all over their lyrics. And it is deeply emotional. Who doesn't fear that they are leaving their best lives out there undiscovered because they are too scared to go out and live them?

The lyrics and the music of Pink Floyd intertwines and makes up emotional and mental drawings of the same class as paintings of Monet and Dali. The combined geniuses of the architect Waters and the artist/magician Gilmour, flanked by Mason and Wright, is just unparalleled and their tracks are timeless and will never rust.

This song can easily transcend into any of our lives as many do. As I understand Wish You Were Here along with Shine on You Crazy Diamond were written for or with Syd Barrett in mind. The original frontman of Pink Floyd, a truly gifted man, arguably the most gifted and inspirational of Pink Floyd, who sadly went into a downward spiral due to mental illness. The song I think laments the loss of their friend and times they once knew.

Back in high school, when this album came out, I worked part time on a woman's clothing store after school. The assistant manager was cool and behind the sales desk was a cabinet with a turntable in it. The store got albums from the record store in the mall. Working in the stockroom we could hear what was playing. Meg always had great tunes playing, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, the Stones, the Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive and all the great rock groups of that time period.

I've been listening to this son and album since it came out 47 years ago and each year passing it gets more and more powerful emotionally. Although it was written as a tribute to their ex band mate Syd Barrett, it can also be about all of us, and the more we grow older and people come and go in our lives this song becomes part of our own history and memories.

Pink Floyd doesn't just play songs they give you experiences. Almost every song will surprise you in one way or another because either something strange will happen at the beginning of the song, somewhere else in the song or you'll note that the next song you hear sounds completely different than the previous one! But the one thing you will notice is nobody sounds like them and they sound like nobody else because they are their own genre! And if you thought that song was too short try a song from the Same album called "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"! It has a long buildup to more brilliant lyrics and the long buildup is worth the wait!!

The beginning of this song is a guy listening to the radio and coming upon this guitar riff. You can hear him cough etc. he then starts to play along with the radio.

i think this song is about leave behind who you are to fit on some standards. the problem being that no matter how much you try to escape from yourself you just can't go so far before realizing that you just find the same old problems that you were trying to run from. to me, it's not about two people that wish that the other was there. instead, he is sing it to that part of himself that went away... it's such an amazing song... i love PF so much.

Just discovered your channel and I'm loving your reactions. If you get the chance one day you should react to Pink Floyd's "Time". I was around when it first came and and trust me when I say, the song hits you differently as you journey through life. Cheers.

Pink floyd and this song is what brought me and My best friend of 20 years together. So it's not always a negative. When I hear and listen to this I remember all the great times we had just cruising around in my old pick up truck, mudding, hunting, fishing, chasing women, being my best man in my wedding, being there during my divorce, being the God father to my kids. Helping bury and grieve my losses of family and friends. I consider him my brother and would take a bullet for that friend and to think this song and is what united us to begin with so many years ago. So when I hear it I can only smile and remember those days. The good ole days as us old people like to say. Hope you get to experience this with someone in your life biss. As always, Much love, Vile

I think this record is actually thier best work. It's so complete when listened to all at once, autobiographical to the band but also broadly about the suffering that is a typical humans existance. Also your smile is mezmerizing. The problem is not you smiling , it's people that don't understand how to appreciate art.

Love your comment, "Too beautiful and too short", it's an amazing song. That comment is exactly what it's like reminiscing about the good times with someone you've lost that you've loved so much. You just can't help but wish you had more of the good times together. And on that note another great song of Pink Floyd's is Time from Darkside of the moon. You should also check out what is one of their most well known songs Money from the same album. The album Dark side of the moon remained on the Billboard top 200 albums chart for over 736 consecutive weeks. That is the timeframe from March 17th 1973 to July 16th 1988. And has as of March 2022 spent a staggering 962 weeks(it's probably more now) on the billboard chart and sold over 45 million copies. You might consider listening to some of their albums in their entirety since so many of the songs transition into each other beautifully and are intended to be listened to as a larger piece of art. Keep it up, you're awesome.

"Did you exchange a 'walk on part' in the war for a 'lead role' in a cage?" Reminds me of all of those that were brave enough to say no to war and rather face being imprisoned, tortured, and executed instead of picking up arms for a government. I am the same.

If you want to see the guys "back in the day" playing live in an ancient Roman Amphitheatre with No Audience, No Lights, No Pyrotechnics and a Dave Gilmour with No Shirt then check out Pink Floyd - "Echoes" (Part 1) live at Pompeii 1972 This version is better as a reaction piece as its cut into 2 parts with a reduced "sound scape" section in the middle. The original track is the entire Side 2 of the album Meddle so a bit long for a reaction video😉

Beautiful, heartfelt reaction. Keep going! If you haven't heard the group America, listen to "Ventura Highway" (which is the most American song you can could ever hear), "Tin Man," and "Sister Golden Hair." In the first song, "alligator lizards" refers to cool-looking cloud formations The well you are in goes very deep, and will reward you always. Thank you!

I love how you feel the music inside you as you react to these classic songs. It's funny that when I was young I think Pink Floyd were coming to the end of their period of being one of the biggest bands in the world, and I've never heard this song before. I know some of their other songs, but this is a cool song, a cool vibe with so much thought and artistic talent in it. We need more artistic talent in music, it's something that seems to have been lost these days, maybe stifled more than lost.
