This song is written for their friend and former band mate Syd Barret who’m became mentally ill and eventually was forced to leave the band. Syd passed away in 2006. I went to the Pulse concert in Rotterdam in 1994 and believe me, I cried my eyes out.

When I was in highschool, a friend of mine and I spent all 4 years going to tons of concerts. We went to clubs to watch local bands several times a month, and to the arena & stadiums to see bigger bands maybe 15 times over that span? Anyways.. the two most memorable concerts we attended were Pink Floyd in 94, and we actually ditched our senior prom to see Page & Plant a year later. My only regret was not keeping all my ticket stubs.

(S)hine On (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond is fully a tribute Syd. His name is even in the title! The WYWH album had themes of him throughout and how much they missed their friend. But this song is about loss, on a universal level. Just missing someone.

For all of us that were lucky enough to see this band I’m positive it will remain the best rock show we’ve ever seen 😃

Actually, DO NOT do 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' from this Pulse concert. This version misses out one complete guitar solo (out of 3!) and the song suffers for it BIG time in my opinion. The audio version has three distinct guitar solos and each should be experienced the way the band meant them to be. Try that version first before moving onto the Pulse version.

Your father is correct. You need to hear an entire Pink Floyd album non-stop ... wearing headphones ... in the dark ... and if Dad didn't tell you, being high improves the experience tremendously. That is how I learned how to listen to Pink Floyd when they first arrived and it remains my preferred way to listen to them.

What brings tears to my eyes when I listen to Pink Floyd is that many of their songs reacquaint me with my youth and my mortality. I'm a veteran so it's not that I'm afraid of death and God knows I've been around it a lot. Rather they invoke feelings of nostalgia, regret, passion and many other emotions. I contemplate my past choices in life which have allowed me to live it to the fullest of my ability. There is always something that everybody thinks to themselves, I could/should have done this or that differently. Every Pink Floyd song has some ability to make you feel a vast array of emotions. But the real truth of it all is that their music is beautiful and I will miss it. Yet then, I just might bump into them in the afterlife.

the whole Pulse Live is an experience. Amazing performance and recording.

I'm 74 and have loved Pink Floyd for almost all of my life. Yes, I tear up often even if I have heard a song many,many times. They are so deep and full of emotion. I've suggested "Time" a few times now and advised the studio version, but if you want to experience the Pulse live version, you will not be disappointed. Listen to the lyrics and see if they change your outlook on life like it did me when I first heard it in my Twenties.

There are so many great Pink Floyd songs and albums. The 60s and 70s were two of the greatest decades for artists and bands. The best of them just didn't stop.

This song was written for one of the founders of Pink Floyd, Sidney Barrett. Like Shine on you Crazy Diamond. He was the front man for Pink Floyd until drugs took him down. David didn't want to release this Trac, Roger Waters wrote it.Syd was diagnosed with what was in that time a specific diagnosis in the DMS IIi. However, one could only guess as Syd was fairly well protected. Either way it was the saddest song that Pink Floyd ever wrote. How devastating the issues that people go through. It devastated the band. Hmm, enough said.

Roger said publicly that, indeed Shine On was about Syd. But, for wish you were here, he never put a name to it. He said it's more about absence of a friend in general that the listener will make his own of it. It fits with the thematic of the album, which is absence.@@stephenreiner1523

Roger wrote the lyrics and David wrote the music. Where did you hear/read that David didn't want to release this track? I've never heard that before and find it odd that might be the case, considering how integral to the album this song is. Thematically, especially.

Pink Floyd put out a lot of good music through the decades. However the four albums they put out in the 70s - Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall - is the pinnacle of their output. Another note, with the Pulse concerts, although great performances, one of the founding members, Roger Waters, had previously left the band and was not in the lineup.

I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap frogged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION… I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shock both hands at the same time, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well.

I've seen a few of his 84 shows on KZread. Despite the boom in success that Pink Floyd had after the In The Flesh tour, David Gilmour on his own was still relatively small and intimate. It was like seeing a Jerry Garcia Band show without The Grateful Dead. If I were him, I'd miss those kind of shows where I'd be able to just be myself with the fans.

Pink Floyd's bassist Roger Waters left the band in 1985 before the Pulse tour. He was one of the main song writers of the band and wrote all these beautiful lyrics to these songs. I recommend to watch Pink Floyds reunion in Live 8. That's the last time the whole Pink Floyd has ever played. It's so emotional when Roger and David are singing together to Syd Barret who had to left the band because of mental problems. The lurics just fit so well to the concert. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl."

Roger actually left before the Momentary laps of Reason tour of 87-89. The Pulse tour wasn't until 1994-1995 to support the Division Bell album.

When Pink Floyd played in a soocer stadium near my home town on their tour, next day the local newspaper wrote about complaints from neighbors who couldn't sleep because of the sound. I just smiled at my mother and told her, this is the last time they heard dinosaurs walk the Earth.

I seen Pink Floyd on this same tour in June 1994 in Vancouver. Amazing show!! Wish You Were here is not only my favorite Pink Floyd song but It's my favorite song period. One of the 1st songs I learned to play on guitar.

I attended 2 Pink Floyd concerts (Cincinnati and Miami) as well as many other big name bands. The best 2 live concerts I have ever attended were Pink Floyd and Pink Floyd.

Hi Stacey, first, I love your show! I am a huge Floyd fan since 1979. (I am 59 today) In the nineties I finally had the chance to see Pink Floyd live. I went to to this concert in 1994 in Rotterdam. And yes we went crazy and yes we cryed our eyes out. The concert was sensational and the best I ever saw, to today. And I saw quite a few....

The wistful helplessness of the last chorus when he adds another 'How I wish' to "How I wish you were here." is just heart wrenching. The words speak for themselves, but the song is set as someone listening to the radio, scrolling through stations until they find a song they like, and then playing along with their own guitar and then singing along for someone they really care about who they miss.

I saw Pink Floyd the first time in ‘84. The 15,000 seat arena was sold out, of course. The part that hit me the hardest… no one stood up, during songs like this. Overcome with emotion, and in awe of the talent witnessed.

They were amazing on that tour. I saw them at an outdoor venue and it was rainy all day until sunset when the show started. The rain stopped, the sky cleared, and the music started. Unforgettable.

Many say that the song "Wish You Were Here" is about Syd Barrett, founding Floyd member, who had to leave the group after what has been called a drug induced psychological breakdown after an album and a half. David Gilmour was his replacement.

He crowd is cheering as much for the song as they are for Syd Barrett, their former founding member for whom this song iis about. He mentally never returned from a bad acid trip way back in their early years. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is another song written for/about Syd and his struggles as is parts of the Wall album. Dig this. I saw Pink Floyd live on April 12, 1975 at the Cow Palace in Brisbane, California about 15 miles south on highway 101 from San Francisco. Then I saw them 2 years later in 1977 for the Animals tour at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The 75 concert was the most incredible concert ever. They played alone for 4 hours. They played the entire Dark Side of The Moon Album and the entire Echoes album and several songs from the Wish You Were Here new Album that had not been released yet. It was released in September 1975. I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in this era. I had just turned 18 in April 75 when I attended this show with about 10 of my closets friends. Will never forget that show.

In college, we would sit around drinking and eventually the guitars would come out. My friend and I were the only ones who knew the words, so we would sing this every time. He died sophomore year. I sat in my dorm room and played this song over and over on my Walkman until the cassette tape snapped. That was 1989. I still think of him whenever I hear this.

Saw pulse tour in 94 in ohio buckeye stadium and Arrowhead stadium kansas city . The giant disco ball looked like the moon when it lit up . Pink floyd doesnt put on a concert! THEY GIVE YOU AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME ❤

I cannot more highly recommend "Great Gig in the Sky"! Album version will move you but the one from the Pulse concert is also very awesome!

Really disagree. Both versions are breath taking and the two female vocalists are superb. But the original studio version with the original singer is just perfection.

I was at the P.U.L.S.E. concert in May 1994 Atlanta, GA. I remember being shocked when hearing that Pink Floyd had done a new album call Division Bell. Once I heard that message on the radio, my sole purpose in life was to obtain a concert ticket. I was in Army A.I.T. training at Fort Gordon, GA at the time and took a taxi to Augusta to get my ticket, which came with a "Party Bus" for those who needed a ride to Atlanta and back. Graduation day was posted on the next day following the concert. The party bus was a group of die hard Pink Floyd fans like me!!! So much fun before we even got to the concert but boy were we blown away!!! I made it back to the base at 2:00am, way past curfew, and made it to the 6:00am graduation ceremony with my Pink Floyd T-shirt on under my class A uniform 😅 ... a forever memory ... so great to be young and bulletproof back then 😉

My late wife and I went to the 1987 stadium tour at the Oakland Coliseum in the pouring rain. Wearing rain suits, we had the whole uncovered section to ourselves, drinking thermoses of hot tea and cocoa . It was spectacular as usual...

I assume you've got a list of more Pink Floyd to do but here's just a few more worth checking out: Sorrow, Mother, Coming Back To Life, Time, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a long one), Breathe, Another Brick in the Wall, Louder Than Words, Echoes (it's like 20 minutes long but worth it), Dogs (another long one), The Great Gig In The Sky, Learning To Fly, Money, Hey You, Marooned (instrumental, quite 'spacy'), One Of These Days. The good thing is you've barely scratched the surface of great Floyd songs. You've enjoyed them so far, there's plenty more where that came from.

It must be one of the most touching and beautiful pieces of music! I cried a lot after listening to their music too.

I pretty much stopped going to concerts after that because I knew I would never see anything better in my life. One song that you should react to from Pulse is "The Great Gig in the Sky". It's one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded by anybody and the performances are absolutely incredible. Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V and VI-IX would be great!!

I saw the "post-Waters" Pink Floyd twice, but before the Pulse concert. Saw them on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in the late-80's, it was a comeback for them at the time a few years after The Wall. The breakup with Roger and the legal issues were still hot at the time. Then, saw them on the Division Bell tour in the early 90's, before the Pulse concert in GB. Incredicble both times.

I've seen well over a thousand concerts. The three straight cold,rainy Pink Floyd shows in 1994 remain the best ever.

There are people that search for the perfection. Then you find people that have a gift that make it so easy and sometimes touch a chord that can change your life.

To me, the most important line of the lyrics is "Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" That line always makes me think about my life. By the way, you kept saying "the album." The 4-5 songs you have heard have been from 4-5 albums. You dad is right; Pink Floyd created concept albums. But you're going to have to choose which album.

I saw Pink Floyd 11 times on this tour and each time was mesmerizing and emotional! It was definitely one of those "you had to be there" tours.

I’m glad you like Pink Floyd almost everybody does. I was born in the 50s and I had my first child in 1975 and I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd since the 60s since we started. My first five children were girls. My point is my girls would listen to dark side of the Moon Full album at night when they go to bed. They still do it to this day. I do it too. Sometimes when you’re listening to recordings and not able to see the concert, you’re not hearing David Gilmour singing it’s Roger Waters if you want to see them both singing watch the video for the song. Young lust. I think you’ll enjoy it by the way the lyrics and wish you were here. You gotta remember when they wrote this music Vietnam war was on and it was quite a bit going on a lot more than you think domestic terrorist bombs going off all over the place it was a different time, Pink Floyd is timeless. I like watching you listen to him and they can make you cry.

I was in attendance at the filming of this concert. It was at Earls Court in London. PF played 12 nights at the end of the Pulse tour, I was there for 3 of those nights.

If I am not mistaken, this was the first of two encore songs. Encores are generally a planned part of the show [if] the band is up to playing them and the audience's ovation is grand enough. The wish you were here encore was a great choice because it began with the recorded intro from the album. I always got the impression the song was about Syd Barrett as if he were listening to the radio, switching channels until he came upon the rhythm guitar piece and laid down a lead solo over it (as if to play along with the radio). This gave the Pulse audience a slight uncertainty if there was going to be a live encore performance of the song, and when they picked up on the recording with the 12 string guitar and then David's solo lead... the crowd went even more nuts than they had been (trying to get Pink Floyd to play an encore) in the first place. Another mastery of the band, knowing how to maximize audience anticipation and participation.

You'll really be in tears when you delve into the Waters Gilmour feud.

There really is no point. It ruins things. They are equally narcissistic in their own ways. Richard Wright was on the money when he spoke about Waters. Somewhere along the lines between jealousy and narcissism is the route of it all. I was always a Waters fan but now I am team Gilmour. But the truth is, all real fans should ignore it all and just relish the music. Which is the greatest in the history of rock music🙏

Pink Floyd by far the Best band to see in concert . Seen them so many times with and without Roger Waters . Roger is very much missed but they don't miss a beat without him. A real shame they couldn't work things out...also now Rick has passed And another Real shame is there is no Pink Floyd anymore ,we can never experience thier talent together ever again.

This is one of the only Pink Floyd songs I can play verbatim on guitar. I'm loving that you are loving Pink Floyd.

The great thing about going to concerts in this time period was that nobody was on their phones or were trying to video the performance. Everyone was in the moment (albeit, many were out of their minds on hallucinogens). I caught them 5 times on this tour, and the crowd was into every song, start to finish. 30 years (and over 100 concerts) later and this is still one of the best concerts I have attended.

The crowd sang along because they understood the meaning of this song and who it was a tribute to. RIP Syd. You will always be loved, celebrated, and treasured.

Hello from Switzerland, yes, well, whatever Dad says you should listen to, my daughter does it too (sometimes😛). I agree with you more than 100%, I would have loved to have been at the concert, whatever you paid for a ticket, what you got was more than worth every cent. The song is even more intense when you miss someone who may no longer be in this world, at least that's how it feels for me, that's exactly why it's so beautiful. Yes, David comes across like a plumber (=normal street clothes), you wonder what the craftsman is doing on stage until he starts playing the guitar, at the latest then you realize, no, that's not the plumber. 😂 For me, that makes him and Pink Floyd all the more remarkable because they don't actually put on a show themselves, but they offer so much more musically, as well as the really atmospheric and impressive lighting effects to compensate (visually). The Pulse concert is definitely one of the best ever, but certain elements of the remastered versions bother me, so I prefer the "old" ones. The whole album, wonder how accurate that looks, but if it's just the CD version, I don't know how excited people are to look at it. I'm missing another title, "The Great Gig in the Sky", I would also be very happy about your reaction to it.

Every one of your PF reactions have been heart felt. Any PULSE song is amazing but "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a masterpiece of music composition. It is one of the longest songs to react to but will be worth it.

I was at this show, a couple nights after this recording, on the last night of the Division Bell world tour. I've seen this footage more times than I can count, and yet still today watching it alongside you I was welling up. This is why I so much enjoy rewatching these great songs in videos like yours - it's like seeing them for the first time through new eyes.

I love seeing your reactions to Pink Floyd. I've been a huge fan for many years and was fortunate enough to see them in concert in 1994. Their music does have a way of uniting people. I remember a feeling of "collectiveness" throughout the concert. It was so surreal. Great reaction again!

I saw them on the tour this was recorded on. They had the whole stadium singing this song with them. Saw them at Sullivan Stadium in Foxborough MA. The old home of the New England Patriots before they built Gilette Stadium. The whole place was rocking.

Great reaction Stacey!! I've always loved this song, and it never fails to get me misty eyed, but since April 2018, it makes me cry. I was the one to introduce Pink Floyd to my mom, and she quickly came to love their music! She passed in April 2018, and I personally think it was more than coincidence when after her cremation, the family assembled in the chapel next connected to the crematorium, and what song comes on, while we're all hugging and already crying - Wish You Were Here! Talk about an emotional moment (more than it was already) - it was mom's message that she's okay! So now - I can't help but full on bawl hearing this song. It's a beautiful piece! Love you and RIP mom! I DO wish you were here!

I'm so glad you've found PF so profound and "therapeutic". I wanted to make you aware that the "Pulse" tour/album is actually a 'Greatest Hits' album and has no theme. Ironically, the songs you've reacted to are all from separate albums: High Hopes - The Division Bell Comfortably Numb - The Wall On the Turning Away - A Momentary Lapse of Reason Wish You Were Here - Wish You Were Here. Each of these albums has it's own concept, theme or story. Keeping with that pattern, I suggest the next 'Pulse' performance you review should be either "Time" or "Money" from the album Dark Side of the Moon.

I love your reaction to this song as it is the same reaction I have to it every time I listen to it. It doesn't matter if its a live version or the album version. I have listened to it countless times and it always brings a tear to my eye. Sometimes with a wry smile and sometimes with my heart hurting for the ones I miss and there are too many and more joining the list every year. I have seen them in concert many times and the feeling in the venue when this (and many other songs) starts is so moving, the whole audience goes to wherever the music takes them and it feels like you have 20000 people who understand the pain you are feeling. I know it probably sounds really pretentious but their music moves me every time.

We used to drink beer and eat mushrooms in the parking lot before the shows in the early 80's...then it was drinking vodka and taking some X before the shows in the late 80's...then tequila and molly in the 90's. Now we tell our kids not to do drugs and go with them to the show totally sober while trying to remember that girls name I met so many years ago, the girl with her nipples poking through the macrame shirt she was wearing...

we cried, some even cried multiple times, and even a few never stopped crying. Not all the tears are from sorrow or negative, as many were in pure joy, the joy of being at such an incredible event, seeing such incredible artists, displayed in such an incredible sensory expressive manner, and with so many like people who just get it, and how all of it puts such an energy into the air, the space that is truly heavenly. I have seen The Wall tour, Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, and Pulse tour...I have also seen Roger Waters' The Wall Tour and I look forward to seeing David's solo tour someday soon. Keep going with this, you are doing wonderful in these reactions. There is so, so much more to go, many albums, many tracks, live and studio, and even some important renditions that make the journey complete, One might suggest having a Pink Floyd day where you pick out 1 or 2 tracks to react to once a week, for even at that pace, it is going to take the better part of a year to get through just the hits, let alone the oddities like Pigs on the Wing parts I, II, & III which has David's guitar solos bridging each that can't be found on the original release of the Animals album, but once you have listened to it, the compilation will forever seem unfinished without it. Or, the comparison between Clare's original masterpiece of "The Great Gig in the Sky" and each of the two live versions from Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse tours. Maybe it is just enjoying the difference between David's pure creativity in Echoes live at Pompeii compared with the maturity and aging in all its meaning and feels that happens in David's solo tour when he played it with Richard for the last time live at the Gdansk Shipyard. The point is, there are a lot of epic tracks to cover, and epic renditions of those epic tracks, and there are only so many hours in a day, and when you grasp the message in the track Time, you will get how important it is to make the most of the time you have with this epic band. We will be here to share the journey you take and wonder at the moments that come from doing so. Hopefully, it is a big journey with lots of moments.

I was there. Delicate Sounds of Thunder in 87, and Pulse in 94. No other concert comes close. Saw Nick Mason (Saucerful of Secrets) at the Paramount in Seattle a few years ago, also. Nick was really fun, but Pink Floyd is chilling.

One of the most beautiful and soul-touching songs ever created - lyrically it is pure poetry that cracks my heart every time. It is definitely one I wish I could hear for the first time all over - thanks for your reaction, so lovely to see someone experiencing this sublimely gorgeous song ❤
