Quite simply one of the best rock band performances of all time!!!

I'm 65, Disabled Vet. I own 71 guitars. I am humbled each time I watch this. In my mind, probably the best there ever was.

This is one of the best drumming performances of all time. Terry Williams is a master.

It's a definitely from me too. Nothing comes close.

I also think that the Dire Straits song you have heard is “Money for nothing”. There is a live version of it in which Eric Clapton also plays guitar, Sting sings on chorus and Phil Collins is drumming. Another good song is “Brothers in Arms”.

Unadulterated skill without the distraction of visual spectacle or artificial enhancements. Dire Straits is a testament to what music should be.

This performance is widely considered one of the best live performances in rock history. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and still going. Terry Williams on the drums was simply a beast. Terry is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales.

No matter how many times I have seen this video, I still say WOW!! Terry Williams on the drums, looks like he's fighting evil and kicking it's ass!!

Mark even looked back a time or 2 and acknowledged his beating the hell out of those drums. One of my favorite bands, their first album was the first album I played in 1978 after buying a knock out stereo with a pioneer 120watt/channel receiver, 2 JBL studio monitor speakers, a 24 band pioneer equalizer 12 bands per channel, a technics turntable and a technics casette deck that was, at the time capable of playing metal cassette tapes which at the time was as good as it got back then. That entire album was played onboard my ship and was bought at the US Navy exchange in Naples Italy, our home base when deployed. It cost $1200 in 1978. The second album I played on it was the first Boston album, it sounded insane.

Mark Knopfler is probably the best guitarist in the world. this track is just phenomenal especially live.

And that is why music is my religion.

"Telegraph Road" and "Tunnel Of Love" from the same concert, you won't be sorry. I was fortunate enough to see Dire Straits live twice.

I didn't even realize they were British until a few years ago. This band is so toght and every musician gets his time to shine. Mark is too good to be believed! One of the greatest guitarists of all time. He makes it look so darn easy. Everyone has a great time, and the audience loves it. I was in my 20s but could have never afforded a ticket❤.

Saw these guys on this tour. No backup band. Just three straight hours of Dire Straits. Excellent sound and craftsman ship.

Can't stop listen to this masterpiecs. Best band ever, Mark Knopflers smile is absolute pure joy. Nothing can beat this. Another great song is " Brothers in arms" dont miss it.

There are two keyboard players; the dancing guy is just playing organ-like chords, whilst the the guy surrounded by keys is playing piano and synths.

That drummer is amazing!!!!! He's like the energizer bunny.

Terry Williams - doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Technically a genius and should be mentioned in the same way Moon, Bonham etc are.

When Mark was young he wanted a red guitar like his idol the great guitarist Hank Marvin and as they say the rest is history.

Dire Straits in concert had two keyboard players. The principal keyboard player was Allan Clarke, he is a classically trained pianist. He went on to be Tina Turner's director of music.

I love that half of that isn't even in the studio version of the song, they're just jamming the heck out, having a great time. Mark Knopfler has to be one of the best improv guitarists ever.

Probably (and I know this a massive statement) the best live performance of popular music ever recorded

The performance of all band members is simply not from this planet! It’s a masterpiece of human mankind and must not be lost!!!! It should be send out to the stars! Digital, CD and Vinyl. If human mankind die sometime, this has to exist forever 🙏

We have a ton of excellent bands from my generation. They are still around 40 and 50 years later. I turned 18 in 1972. I was a hippie, a wild child and a free spirit. So the rest of the 70's and most of the 80's were a blur 😂. But I remember the music ❤. Lovin' me some Dire Straights. Excellent show ❤. Thanks for the memories.

Another shout out for the sound engineer. Masterclass in balance that created this level of performance. If he had been having a bad day this epic performance would have been lost for ever.

These guy's were having one of those rare, "Peak Experiences". Like Tom Brady winning a Super Bowl or LeBron James NBA Championship winning Game. Everything coming together just perfectly, and thank God they filmed it!

I had the great pleasure of being side stage at a Dire Straits concert in London, a friend was a printer who printed the tickets for the tour so got side stage passes.

You have a privilege to watch one of the best rock guitarists. That is a guy who sings, and plays solo at the same time 😊. Well, drummer is great, bit that is obvious.

A group of great musicians having a good time...

The GOAT simple.

Mark Knopfler OBE is a Guitar giant, one of the most emotive guitarists to grace the mainstream, an equal to David Gilmour, Eric Clapton often plays Rhythm Guitar for him. He's also a brilliant Lyricist and Composer, a consummate storyteller with a strong romantic bone. Dire Straits sold over 120 million Albums. They were one of the biggest live acts of the 80s. "Sultans of Swing" was their debut hit, and generally considered their most famous song. If you hadn't heard it but recognized the voice, then you may have heard "Money For Nothing" (featuring Sting) or "Walk Of Life". Both got a lot of airplay in the USA, with the former having an iconic video clip and very controversial verse (by today's standards, disregarding context). They are an amazing Band that are worth a deep dive. Roots, Pub Rock, Bluegrass elements, Progressive, they covered decent ground. They weren't angling for trendy, their undeniable chops made them immensely popular around the world. Some absolute epic songs like "Tunnel of Love" and "Telegraph Road" with stunning, moving Solos. The heart wrenching "Brothers In Arms", The stirring "Going Home", the brooding "Private Investigations". Great pop with "Lady Writer" and "Down to the Waterline" and "Romeo & Juliet". Dire Straits were a top class, supremely talented Band that truly deserve their place in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame (even if Mark Knopfler didn't even show up to his own induction).

So glad I was born when Mark Knopfler was around.

Simply the greatest British rock band in the post-Beatles era. Their 'Alchemy' live album is easily the greatest live of the 80s in pop/rock music and I would recommend Tunnel of Love from that live to any human being.

The story behind Williams' performance is that his father, who disapproved of some of his son's choices (particularly rock and roll) was in the crowd, and moved by his son's performance, and the quality of Dire Straits in general. If you look, there are times in the vid when the other guys glance over at him, like WTF?

These guys are unmistakable, it takes one listen of these guys and your never going to right, 😁

Sometimes a live performance is so sublime it transcends all musical genres so regardless of your taste in music you can only watch and listen in amazement it just doesn,t get any better than this

Around 05:30 Terry Williams the drummer lays down those epic fills and Mark and his bass player look back at Terry and each other, smile and say "this is going to be next level". When I first heard this version I was spoiled--much better than the studio cut.

If there is better unblemished 11 minute guitar masterpiece ever, I'm yet to see it. I'm 56 & wish I was a few years older so I could have witnessed The Beatles in full flight.. Witnessing ABBA mid to late 70's then Dire Straights through the early to mid eighties was probably the next best thing.

Congratulations. You just watched the greatest live guitar performance of all time. And I was there! Just got back from a 6 month deployment with the Navy. What a way to come back to civilisation!

This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler was untouchable during this time. Next, please react to Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy concert.

The band is absolutely flying on this track, yes it's quite obvious that all are having a complete ball. And the new section that was created for this live version at about the 12:20 mark is so simple chordwise yet incredibly dynamic and beautifully creative. The new guitar motif that Knopfler creates at about 13:12 is so amazing, especially in the extrapolations he applies to the original idea. No doubt about it, they were a fantastic band and he's a master, and this version is nothing short of genius. Luv ya Dire Straits..

The great guitarist Chet Atkins developed a number of different sounds and chord combinations over his long career. In an interviewc he explained that one day he listened to a Dire Straits CD as he heard Mark was supposed to be good and recognized some of his own chords in the melody. He was impressed enough that he asked his manager to get word to Mark that he would like to meet him. Mark agreed and they met when Mark and band was touring in the US. They became close triends and Mark even bought the house next to Chet's to make visiting easier when Mark was in the States. They remained friends up to Chet's death. I saw a video of them doing a show together and as amazing as Mark is, Chet was even better.

Was living in the UK when this concert was recorded. Saw them later on the same tour- one of the best shows I have ever seen. Knopfler just kills it with that guitar. Sultans of Swing to me is one of the alltime Top Ten rock records ever made and Mark Knopfler one of my top ten guitarists.

I am happy you saw them in their prime, but Alchemy was recorded on the last two concerts of the tour. I only saw them on the On Every Street Tour - but I am very glad I did!

he is not just a great guitar player but he is officially ranked amongst the best of all time guitar players.

There is no way to compare this with any thing, Mark is the best, sings lead and plays lead very rare, super drummer they are the best in what they do, keep it up you to.

If you've just found Dire Straits, you are in for a treat. Any of the other songs from Alchemy Live are well worth a listen, especially Telegraph Road

Grew up with my Dad listening to them in the 80's and I love them until today ❤️ Mark is such an amazing guitarist... they have so many beautiful songs, "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", "Brothers in Arms" and many many more 🤩

@@Fred-hk7wk I totally agree. I went there. I'm from Oz. Best ever versions but the quality of the recordings are ok but not the best. It was simulcast on FM radio so it should have come out better than it did here on KZread. Sultans and Tunnel of love are incredible versions here.

No pyro, no bullshit, no support garbage, no gimmicks, just 3 hours of awesome music. Sydney concert still sounds awesome through my surround sound. Tunnel of Love is just my favourite piece of music ever. Just beautiful music from a genius.

Mark and his brother get all the lime light but my man Terry on the kit is the glue that held this band together. This is quite possibly the best drive-with-your-top down song ever recorded. I cant even begin to tell you how many speeding tickets I got to this song! All worth it!

His brother left the group long before this tour or album.

I remember when this song came out in the late 70's . I was on a 10 month deployment and this song was revolutionary. But after discovering this live version several years ago I can hardly listen to the original, but I do. Awesome finger picking and Terry Williams just wails the drums up. Prolly my #2 favorite song in the past 64 years

Hey Guys - I'm now 75 years old and I remember in the 70's when Dire Straits hit the road running ! There will never be anything like them again - at least for me ! I must have watched the Alchemy live album a hundred times and it still gives me goosebumps ¬! The group leader, Mark Knoffler is probably one of the best rock guitarist, and he writes loads of stuff inc., musical scores - e.g.The Film Local Hero ?? Mark must be about the same age as me now, maybe a bit younger and still going ! Dig into this album and try " Telegraph road " next ! Also have a look at " Tunnel of love " from their Live at Wembley concert !! I think it was in 85'. That unique guitar sound from a guy who does not use a pick - Phenomenal !!

Dire Straits often described as "The Best Band Your Dad Listens To" and it's been said that on paper the band shouldn't work, they shouldn't be good or popular and yet they are. The studio version of this song is great but this live version blows it away.

Hey Guys! Dire Straits was my very first rock concert and it was on this tour when Live Alchemy was recorded! This was their tour for the album "Love Over Gold"! Mark Knopfler is one of my all time favorite guitarists! Some of their other great songs: Once Upon A Time in the West, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway, Tunnel of Love, Telegraph Road, Private Investigations, Industrial Disease, Brothers in Arms.

At 83 an old Elvis fan and bluegrass banjo Player I love marks guitar playing . Great review guys

I grew up listening to Dire Straits, i've watched their Alchemy tour on DVD SO many times....World class musicians, and you won't find a tighter band anywhere!!

I'm surprised you didn't noticed and / or react to his playing style. Mark Knopfler has always been associated with fingerpicking. His totally unique right hand technique has become his landmark since the first Dire Straits album . There is a ton You Tube videos with examination and explanation of his technique.

Dude, this is Terry Williams on the Drums... The only who can match Mark in his style... And by the way, this is one of the Great Performances of all times...

The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much. What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑 🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩

Terry Williams is killing it after knowing his dad would be there and proud of him for the first time....the band knew this so they pushed it along as good mates do. Not women.

In 1985 I was 27 and saw a similar live performance on the Brothers in Arms tour. What a fantastic decade for music - Straits, Rush, Gabriel, the list goes on and on and on. I feel fortunate to have been the right age to experience it all.

Can you imagine how great that concert must have been?

I flipping love this, such a great band, my dad loved them and I have realised why ! ❤
