Fans never bring him up when talking about guitar legends, but you know who does? Guitar legends themselves. Knopfler is completely respected by his peers, but a bit of an unsung hero among the public.

Sadly Terry did the drumming for the whole Brothers In Arms album but Mark decided it didn't work with what he wanted so the only part he kept was the intro to Money for Nothing. The rest of the album was re recorded with a different drummer.

No picks. Plays only with his bare fingers. One of the few who plays electric guitar that way. It's what gives him his unique sound. Man is brilliant and has been for decades.

This is a LIVE performance. Tight as hell. Great song, drummer, guitar solo.

Terry Williams crushed the drums on this. Definitely one of the best drummers in rock. Knopfler is absolutely one of the best guitarists in the world. And, this is one of the best rock performances ever.

Knopfler can be so confident because he is a master of his instrument.

One of the hardest working drummers in rock ! The whole band was just killer . Mark didnt plug into an amp, he plugged into your soul. This makes me weep for the music of today, these guys never dreamed of mixing any sounds or God forbid auto tune. Real musicians with talent !

Is that true? Prince notoriously had a massive ego (and deservedly so). Please let this be true. I'd have countered with Dave Gilmour, but that is personal preference stuff. And it's the close race of my whole 50+ years on earth. You can keep your Satrianis and Vais, and blokes who can play a scale faster than anyone else alive. This guy, Gilmour, and Vaughan. Gilmour and Stevie Ray sing MUCH better than Knopfler, yet somehow it doesn't matter with your Geordie boy. Love it.

1978. This was a British Band headed by guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler. He is truly, one of the finest guitarists in the world at the time. He's almost 75 these days, so he may not be as good as he once was in his younger days, but that happens to athletes, and musicians alike. It doesn't mean they aren't still great as legends, and Mark Knopfler is a legend. Good stuff Thanks

​@casumarzu-fr2zn Beck is only 4 or 5 years older than Knoppfler, so unless Mark got a really late start, I would seriously doubt that Jeff was 15, or more, years ahead in his guitar playing. I have listening to interviews with Knoppfler and I don't recall him crediting Beck with influencing his style at all. You don't have to denigrate one to appreciate the other. They are both geniuses at their trade.

@@casumarzu-fr2zn I know exactly who Jeff Beck is moron (Yardbirds is one of my favourite bands), and he used a pick in a lot of his songs, whereas Knopfler never used one. Get the difference or do you need a drawing?

Normally I'm okay with the studio version of a song but this live version is a killer. Between the drum work and Mark's guitar I'm awestruck. Money For Nothing is another great Dire Straits song.

The guitar in this song is a thing of beauty, probably one of the best guitar tracks of all time and surely one of the best solos... You really don't get much better than Mark Knopfler when talking guitar

I was talking to Eric Clapton way back in the `80s at Peter Gabriel`s studio in Box and he reckoned Knopfler was THE best. Some praise coming from Slow Hand himself.

Apparently, this song is based on a true story. Mark was in London one night and it was raining really heavily so he decided to go into a pub where there was a band playing to a virtually empty audience, with hardly any of them taking any notice of the music, they just wanted to get dry...and they called themselves 'The Sultans of Swing' but Mark felt they were a pretty decent band.

Very close to the truth but in an interview with Brian Johnson from AC/DC back in the hometown of both Brian and Mark (and myself), Newcastle Upon Tyne, he said they were actually pretty dull, and that at the end they introduced themselves as ‘The Sultans Of Swing’. He wrote the song about it because he though no one in history has ever been LESS ‘sultan’ of anything ever than that band were that day 😂. It’s the only interview I’ve ever found where he explains it in that depth. It’s well worth looking up

Sultans of Swing is my favorite song. But for the best rock performance, I'll have to go with Queen at Live Aid. Freddy was the only one who could get a 100,000 people to do vocal exercises with him.

This was Dire Straits' first single. It was one of five songs on a demo tape they used to get their record deal. The tape got played on London radio and started a bidding war for the band. Could you please react to Walk of life by Dire Straits 🙂

Think the bass player John Illsley paid for it to be recorded with the money his Nan left him. Saw a documentary with him and Mark, he said "I never got the money back" Mark comes back with "You did alright out of me" 🤣

This live version has replaced my 10min timer 😆 I put a hyperlink to it on my phones home screen and it’s so much more pleasant than that damn beeping sound of a normal timer. I know when they start clapping that I’ve got 2 1/2 mins left 😅🤩✨✨

I've been a fan of Dire Straits since the 70s. This is my all-time favorite song and my all-time favorite performance. I remember picking up this Cassette when I was in the Navy in Norfolk, VA back in 1984. It stayed in my car's tape deck the whole summer.

I just turned 50 and I love seeing younger generation appreciate good music no matter what the genre or era. This is one of the finest live performances of one of the best songs ever without a question. Every part of it is sublime but the drummer going off is my favorite

Knopler's effortless confidence is even more impressive when you realize that he's a left-hander playing a right-handed guitar. He's also an accomplished producer and film-score composer, with "The Princess Bride" being amongst his many credits. To give a small idea of how influential Dire Straits were at the time, their "Brothers in Arms" album in 1985 is credited with launching the CD format, as it was the first work to sell over a million copies on the discs. That total now stands at over 30 million units sold, and, almost 40 years on, "BiA" remains the 4th best-selling UK album ever.

The smile on your face says it all. By the way he is widely considered one of the top 5 guitarist of all time

For the record, this was from the Alchemy concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon, July 1983. ("Alchemy" is just the name of the concert video. The tour was the "Love Over Gold" tour.)

Mark Knopfler was one of the greatest guitarists of the 70's, Money For Nothing is another great track of theirs.

83' kid here. My father introduced me to dire straights very early, and I became a musician because of it. Take a look at "money for nothing" by them. I loved your enthusiasm for this.

Nice reaction. They are an awesome band. There is so much to recommend. Walk Of Life or Money For Nothing or Telegraph Road or Brothers In Arms are all good choices. Some of my other favorites are songs like Private Investigations, Romeo and Juliet, Calling Elvis and more. They have a lot of seriously awesome songs.

My advice would be to save the track Dire Straights - "Brother's in Arms" for Veterans Day😉

'The Sultans of Swing' first came out in 1978!! (I was 18!). Just loved it & still do! Mark Knopfler is such an amazing talented guitarist ever! The band fantastic too!!

Nice to see a positive reaction to this track, the whole album is class. In all honesty they never made a bad album, I was fortunate enough to see them twice. Their first album is well worth a listen.

You need to listen to Tunnel of Love live at Wembley for one of the best and most beautiful instrumentals by any band. Be prepared for 16 minutes of joy of which 6 minutes of it is pure ecstasy.

A year later in 1985, Dire Straits had a 9X platinum record 'Brothers in arms' ... thanks to the big MTV single 'Money for nothing' 👈🔥 Mark Knopfler (vocals & guitar) was the band's main member and songwriter... his singing style was a mix of Johnny Cash, Elvis & Bob Dylan. His guitar skills were exceptional - he could play ANY style of music... from blues to jazz, from country to rock... Dire Straits crossed a number of genres w/ their music. The original band was Mark Knopfler, his brother David Knopfler (guitar), Pick Withers (drums) & John Illsley (bass)... David Knopfler left after 2 albums, Withers left after 4th album. This performance in 1984 was w/ new members Alan Clark (keyboards), Hal Lindes (guitar) & Terry Williams (drums) who recorded the 'Brothers in arms' album in '85, which made Dire Straits superstars. Mark Knopfler was not happy w/ the band's massive status... in 1991, he recorded the band's final album 'On every street' and the band ended their career with a live album 'On the night' in 1993. Mark Knopfler returned in 1996 w/ a solo album 'Golden heart' and has been a solo artist ever since. He has no desire to bring back Dire Straits. This is one of those songs that you listen to on a roadtrip and it makes it a hundred times better

They had a number of hits on the radio, but a must listen is "Brothers In Arms".

That’s true and all but how are they going to understand the true essence of this sentiment when they haven’t heard the original? This is why it sucks when reactors don’t get the chance to listen to the original song in its purest form first. You go FROM THAT TO these live performances like Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and confused and the wonder within (for that exact song) blooms like a flower unique to your own spirit but they’re robbed of that because the fans selfishly think of what their favorite version means to themselves.

Mark Knopfler is the reason so many people gave up learning to play the guitar his skill level is insane

I've seen Dire Straits a few time's in Concert and I have all their albums. First time I saw them live in concert I was only 15years old we danced the whole concert. One of our greatest British bands Mark, Singer and lead guitarist was a University lecturer when he formed his band. Mark is the reason I learnt to play the guitar.

Amazing band, very unique sound

I thought Pic Withers, the original drummer couldn’t be bettered, but our Welsh friend nails it. Terry also played with my favourite band’Man’. Fabulous. I’m 67 and first heard Mark and the boys playing this 50 years ago.

Dire Straits started in the 1970's. This concert was 1983. Review Telegraph road too from this concert which is even better. Theyre all in their mid 70's now and still brilliant, mark has slowed down obviously with age but you never get sick of his playing.

They've knocked out some epic songs, 3 of the best being 'Telegraph Road', 'Planet of New Orleans' and 'Brothers in Arms'

My dad used to play this band specifically this song when i was back in elementary through middle school. And at 24 now i still be listening to this stuff, it’s just always good shit

there are musicians and MUSICIANS. This is art, that comes with hard effort. Its not only talent, its a hard effort to learn to play guitar that way. Mark Knopfler said when he was young, he would fall asleep while playing guitar in the night. So without sweat and tears you cant make to this type of quality. Of course, his song writing skills are epic.

Post-punk was a really fascinating time for music because it combined a lot of different styles together including jazz ,soul ‘dub and funk with rock and roll and punk

Just the look in your eyes, and your smiles,I can see you enjoy it! I remember back when I was 2years old, heard brothers in arms for the first time. I have been stuck ever since, and that was in 87.

This concert always reminds of what it's like to play in a band in front of people, with a bunch of your friends on the other instruments. It's like hosting a party where you get to do exactly what YOU want, and everyone applauds for you with genuine appreciation. It's a lot of people's dream night. More of us should feel grateful more often for having had that in our lives. As for this song, when I saw it live it was pretty close to this, except the keyboard player got a huge solo.

Congratulations, you`ve just watched the greatest live guitar track of all time. I was there and I can tell you, everyone was buzzing!

Just watching and listening to this outro solo on you tube is overwhelming imagine how the audience must feel

When it comes to "guitar music", for me, Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits and David Gilmour/Pink Floyd has always been at the top. With Slash/Guns n Roses, John Frusciante/Red Hot Chilil Peppers, Malcolm Young/Angus Young/AC/DC as a close second.

not sure if you knew this or not but in the song he sung check out guitar George well he knows all those fancy chords the George he sings about is George Young brother of Mel and Angus and Harry is Harry Vander who with George played in the band The Easy Beats they also wrote many hit songs together

I was up there for that, wearing filthy overalls covered in oil and shit from work, as my car broke down on my way home from work…in the end I left the bloody thing in the road, and walked to the train station…people on the tube weren’t happy getting squashed up against a stinking twat who left oil stains on their clothes…well worth it though, Hank Marvin coming on for ‘Going Home’ was fucking brilliant…

The Dire Straits are TIGHT with their music. They seem to play effortlessly on their instruments, but you know there was a lot of time that went into playing together to make it look and sound so easy. What a tremendous band and you can see how much enjoyment they get performing together.

David Knopfler on rythm, not Hal Lindes - he came in on rhythm after David left

They were popular in the late ‘70’s and beyond. I had just graduated high school when this song was popular. Great song, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and the drummer was amazing.

In 1968 as an 8th grader I saw the great Alvin Lee an Ten Years After play Goin Home in a concert at Stony Brook NY. They killed it again a year later at Woodstock. Ten years later Knofler and Dire Straits gifted this masterpiece to the world. It is music of a same type. Brilliant. Powerful. Awe inspiring. Great every time it is heard by anyone on this planet

Fantastic track from a brilliant British band, formed in London late 70's, Mark Knopfler (lead vocals/lead guitar) and his brother David (rythm guitar) both came from the North East of England the birthplace of so many amazing musical artists. 'Brothers in Arms' remains one of my favourite tracks ever.

"Money For Nothing" is a must react to by Dire Straits. I know you know the tune when you hear it.

Like your reaction, I’ve been a huge fan of Dire Straits since 1980 & was lucky to see them in concert number of times. They are fantastic live If you haven’t already I think you would enjoy reacting to Telegraph Road from the same concert

I love dire straits!! used to lay under the staircase and listen to my dads music :D and found this band :D
