This is one of the few bands that had two separate eras that were both phenomenal, original lead singer. David Lee Roth, who had crazy showmanship, and their music was much harder at that time, which was fantastic. Then Sammy Hagar took over for him, who in his own right had a great solo career, and also was the front man for Montrose. He had a much better voice and was a much better musician in general then David Lee Roth and the band just seemed to have much more fun on the stage with Sammy. Two totally different vibes. Both were great. Keep doing your reactions. They are fantastic.

Don't underestimate Dave's musicianship. Those vocals were killer and he had his own style and his melody lines complimented Ed's music and they wrote 5 classic albums. Nothing to sneeze at.

@@jamesellis701 People really don't give Sammy enough credit. Sammy was already in a fairly popular band before this, and he had a pretty successful solo career between Montrose and Van Halen. I love that both "eras" and I'm glad we got to see a very successful Van Halen after Roth left, a lot of that has to do with Hagar (look no further than Gary's attempt after Hagar left).

@@jamesellis701 - I'm not so sure when you said "the success of Van Halen in 1984 catapulted them to the top to where it didn't matter who joined they were gonna be a smash success" you were correct. I'm 68 years old, I saw Van Halen many times and a number with each lead singer and Gary Cherone wasn't a smash hit just because he was with Van Halen and their . One concert I went to some people walked out well before Van Halen's set was over and were saying how terrible Gary Cherone was. I'd have left too but my girlfriend at the time wanted to stay. Van Halen III became the band's first album not to sell at least a million copies. They tried pulling out some rare Roth-era songs on the subsequent tour dates, but the die was already cast. Van Halen picking Gary Cherone is considered one of rock's epic fails.

This is actually from 1988, the third single from their eighth studio album OU812. The groove and style definitely changed as the late 80s brought some edginess to some rock bands. Even with Sammy Hagar at the vocal center, Eddie, Michael and Alex held it down as they always have.

I loved how you were able to see the difference from the music driven songs by David Lee Roth and realize that this song was more vocal driven than the past. All without realizing the lead singers had changed. DLR was a fantastic frontman and arguably one of the best ever, but Sammy was a more talented vocalist and showed during his era of singing lead for VH.

When this debuted I was like Holy, to quote Chris Farley, Holy Schnikees. That was awesome 👍😎. Then the DJ announced, after the song, who the band was and I did an instant 😮😮. Very different for them. Alex nearly, in terms of discipline, topped his Hot For Teacher intro. That is hard to do at that tempo. Anyone know whether that was Sammy or Eddie on the acoustic guitar? Brilliant idea. What a beautiful departure from the Diamond Dave era. Strong rocker even though there's not much electrical guitar happening.

This right here is what I have said for years! There doesn't need to be labels for "black" or "white" music....it's just music man! If it makes people happy and gives them some sort of feeling or message, who cares who made it? The sister likes and can appreciate Van Halen, I have been a fan of VH for over 40 years, and love that she can appreciate what I appreciate in the music. Growing up, one of my favorite bands was 5th Dimension....love their music, their messages, their vibe. I also, like Karen Carpenter, 3 Dog Night, Metallica, Motley Crue, the Beatles, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack, EW and F.....be diverse! Don't limit yourself! Love and respect Britt!

They apparently played this song for some of their friends in other bands, who were all excited at this rare opportunity. But they heard this song and were stunned into silence because it was such a departure from their usual stuff. The rest of this album (OU812) is very much what you'd expect from Van Halen. But Eddie was ALWAYS experimenting with his guitar playing. He inspired an entire generation of string-playing long-hairs and is dearly missed.

From 1974 until 1985, Van Halen consisted of Eddie Van Halen; Eddie's brother, drummer Alex Van Halen; vocalist David Lee Roth; and bassist/vocalist Michael Anthony. In 1985, Roth left the band to embark on a solo career and was replaced by former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar.

There have been two different front men and they look similar. David Lee Roth was the original. He had the pants you wanted. He was replaced by Sammy Hagar, seen in this video, in the mid 80's. David Lee Roth returned to the group after Hagar left in the n2010's. When DLR returned he had short hair, as seen in the live version of "Unchained". Alex Van Halen is the drummer. Michael Anthony is on bass.

You said that you can’t put Van Halen music into a specific box, and I say that there would not be a box big enough to hold it. Each individual song on every album provides so much diversity, sound, style, tone, creativity, wit, humor, and in your face guitar licks that leave you wanting more more more, and in the the same instant, asking how how how! Keep the Van Halen reactions coming as I do enjoy them very much. Just keep in mind that you have only scratched the surface, and there is a long way to go from here.

Hi. Just watched your reaction. Supercool 😁 I like the fact that you picked up on how unique Eddies feel is on guitar. In case you werent aware, Jan Van Halen(Dad) was a great jazz clarinetist(i think saxaphone as well) Check out his clarinet solo on VH cover of Big Bad Bill. The feel thing in Eddies playing definetly comes from his dads influence. Everything that Eddie plays (mostly) has a swing feel to it. Thats why it sounds so different than a lot of rock stuff from that era. His rhythym playing is often overlooked, but to play that swing feel convincingly (especially at really fast tempos) is very difficult. Nobody swings like E V H R.I. P

Niiice. An underrated, and my favourite Sammy VH album. Songs are all really different in mood. Brilliant. If I recall correctly, this video was banned... ??

I heard one time that there was another guitarist of that era who was really influenced by Eddie Van Halen and trying to get his sound with his amp and guitar. Then he was on tour with Van Halen and played his actual guitar and amp and figured out the sound was really in Eddie's fingertips.

True Story: The legendary rock band The Scorpions were going to tour with Van Halen as part of 1988 Monsters of Rock Tour. Van Halen invited the members of the Scorpions to the studio to prevue some of Van Halen's soon to be released music for the album OU812 (where this song is from). Sammy sat the Scorpions in the listening booth along with the rest of Van Halen and seriously said (I'm paraphrasing) "We've done the rock thing. We want to try something new. We're excited for you guys to hear our new direction. We decided to make a country western album!" He then played this song (which is country in its tempo and lyrics). The members of the Scorpions were dumbfounded but polite. They didn't know how to process that one of the biggest rock groups in the world with the most famous rock guitarist was going country western. Van Halen let them listen to the song and then asked their opinion. They were polite, but obviously thinking about the reaction of VH fans to this on the tour. After a few minutes, the Van Halen members busted out laughing and said "We're just fucking with you! That's just one song." They then played them other music off the album to reassure the Germans. The Scorpions laughed and said they were completely hoodwinked at first.

You have to react to the live version! You’re hearing the song musically which is awesome and as a guitarist following Ed I can’t complain. But the live version will open your eyes to the lyrics. 🤘🏻

Eddie's guitar tone...got cleaner and cleaner as he got older, just something interesting I never noticed until Nuno Bettencourt said it during a Rick Beato interview.

This blonde guy (Sammy Hagar) can still sing at the almost age of 80. He started with Montrose in the early 70's. David Lee Roth is the original singer.

Britt, i think the previous reactions you did were all David Lee Roth on vocals. The original lead singer up to 1984. Sammy Hagar was the 2nd lead singer of the band from 1985 to 1996. This video/song came out in 1988.

Lead singer, blond, but not "that guy" who "Jumped." This is often referred to as the "Van Hagar Era." (Sammy Hagar) replaced David Lee Roth in 1985/86.

This song has an interesting backstory......(Told by Sam to VH1) Sam was in bed one night doing the hibidydibidy with his lady when he heard rocks hitting his bedroom window. It was Ed. He wanted to write a song. Sam wanted something with a country twist. They cranked this song out in about 30 minutes on an acoustic so Sam could get back to his lady and she could finish what she started.

Sammy Hagar was a great front man with Van Halen in the 90's. I also liked Van Halen with David Lee Roth in the 80's, but they were a different style of band which shows how talented they were to continue to be relevant through both decades with two different styles and different front men.

this song is about Eddie Van Halen interrupting Sammy Hagar the blonde lead singer when he was with a woman getting busy, Sam walked down to Eddie, Eddie showed him his musical idea, when Sammy went back upstairs to the woman, she fell asleep and didn't finish what she started.

She needs to hear "Judgement Day." Or "Summer Night" to hear Eddie's range of making different sounds for the guitar.
